ADJUSTABLE CARDBOARD EASEL.

To all whom t may concern -Be it known that l', MYRoN J. WHIPPLE, a citizen of the United States, and aV resident of Monroe, in the county of Monroe and State or' Michigan, have made an invention appertaining 'to Adjustable Cardboard Easels; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,.and tothe characters or' reference marked thereon,
which form apart of this specification.`
My invention has for its object to provide an easelv for the Support of articles such as advertising cards or figures made fromV cardboard, and wherein means is provided `for readily adjusting the easel as to theangular position in which it holds the object. It also has for its object to provide a means for locking the parts of the easel in its adjusted position. j i
The invention may be contained'in easels which in theirdetails may vary. To illus-l trate a practical application of the invention I have selected a cardboard easel containing the invention and shall describe it hereinafter. The easel selected is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. f

l in the figures is a. blank having a ren tral portion 2 that is divided from the winged portions 3 by scored lines Ll, whereby the wings 8 may be readily bent along the scored lines L The lower ends, of the wings 3 are preferably inclined with respect to the lower end of the central portion 2,'and the upper corners of the wings 3 and the central portion 2 a-djoin. Moreover, the central portion is vpreferably rectangular in form and the wings are triangular. When, therefore, the' wings are bent,` at a slight angle to the central portion they form with the centraly portion a base that is defined by the lower edges of' the wings and of the central portion and a line joining the'outer lower corners Thus to increase the base area of the wings. or to increase the depth of theba'se as measured from the central portion, the wings may be bent with respect to the central por-k tionso as to form smaller angles with the central portion. AAlso if desired to vary the angle position of the central portion as meas ured in the plane of the central portion it may' be done, by moving one of the wings farther back to form a lesser angle with the central portion than the other of the Wings is placed. This is of advantage when a picture or ligure is secured to the central portionat a slight angle, which often occurs when kfigures or cards are secured to the easels byunskilled or careless individuals, and it is desired to correct the position of the card or gure when the easel is set up. ln the figure tilts to the right or to the left to lan undesired degree the easel may thus be adjusted to bring the ligure upright with reference to a transverse plane. TheA invention thus provides a ymeans for adjusting the easel both as to angles extending forward or back or as to angles extending right or v left. n j
'I have also provided a means for lockinfr the easel in its adjusted positions. A su stantially arcuate cut s made in the central part of the blank and across the central Vsition a portion of the edge may be provided withy a plurality of scallops. Preferably theuportions that are cut from the Wings are [provided with the scallops.l The sides of the sector are cut so that the scallops will `frictionally engage the .edges of the wings produced in the formation of the sector, that,` is, the scallops are substanf tially inthe line orl arc described by the corners 8 ofthe sector when the wings are moved angularly relative to the central porn tion 2 of the easel. The .edges of the wings formed by cutting the sector will frictionallyengage the scalloped portions of the sector, but the wings may be 'forced along the scalloped edges when some pressure is applied. 6. ln a sheet material easel having a supporting portion, a Wing hingedlyconnected thereto, a part located in transverse relation to the supporting part and the Wing and having an arcuate edge, the Wing having a point in one of its. edges that describes a path substantially coincident with the said arcuate edge when moved relative to the supporting portion, the Wing having a portion hingedly connected thereto and loinaterial easel having three c thereto, la part located in transverserela-Lv tion to the supporting part and the wing and having an arcuate edge, the wing having a point in one of its edges vthat describes a path substantially coincident with the said arcuate edge when moved relative to the supporting portion, the wing having a portion hingedly connected thereto and located at one side of the arcuate edge portion for clamping the' arcuate edge portion between the hingedly connected portion and the edge of the wing at any point along the arcuate edge portion when the hingedly connectedfportion is forced in position sub,- stantially in plane with the wing.
8. In a sheet material easel comprising three portions, one forming a supporting panel, a second forming a wing, a third forming an engaging member, the said portions hingedly connected to the first named portion along edges of the rst named portion located substantially at right angles to each other, the third named portion having an arcuate serrated edge portion located substantially in the path of one of the points of one of the edges of the second named portion when the second named portionv is moved relative to the iirst named portion and when the third named portion is in engaging position, the second named portionhaving appart movable relative to the second named portion for clamping the serrated arcuate edge portion of the third named portion at any point along the arcuate edge 'portion andk between the edge of the movable part and the edge of' the second named portion.
