OIL BURNER.
Application filed January 12, 1922. Serial No. 528,627.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BURL A. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- peka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented new .and useful Improvements in Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention has for its object the provision of a simple, easily cleaned and highly efiicient oil burner for use in heating stoves andfurnaces, and one in which it is feasible to use various kinds of hydrocarbons.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

Among other elements my novel burner comprises a cast-iron annular bowl, 1. e., a bowl having a central, vertically-disposed passage 2 which is preferably tapered upwardly as shown in Figure 1. bowl 1 is secured in a stove or furnace body The said or fire box 3 in a practically air-tight manner through the medium of interposed firecla-y 4 or other appropriate material.
Connected at 5 to the underside of the bowl 1 is a strap 6 through which extends an upright pipe 7, designed to be connected,
by a valved pipe 8 with a source of hydrocarbon supply. The strap 6 serves to maintain the pipe 7 in the center of thebowl 1 above which the Figure l.
In addition to the bowl 1 and pipe 7, my novel burner comprises an iron dome 9, and an iron, removable crown member 10. The dome 9 is provided with a central threaded aperture, Figure 1 to receive the threaded porti n of the pipe 7, though it is within the pipe extends as shown in purview of my invention to connect the dome and pipe or to support the dome on the pipe in any other appropriate manner. At its upper side the dome 9 is ribbed as designated by 11, the ribs 11 being equidistant and extending radially from the said central aperture to the edge of the dome, thereby affording oil passages which are increased in width as they recede from the said central aperture, as best shown in Figure 4. Invirtue of this provision gradually widening and thinning films of hydrocarbon are presented to the heating action of the dome 9 and crown member 10 before the hydrocarbon is commingled with the incoming air, with the result that a highly combustible mixture is afforded and the successful operation of the burner is assured. The crown member 10 is designed to be removably arranged in inverted position over the dome 9, Figure 1, when, by reason of the ribs 11, oil pasages 12 will be formed between the dome and the crown member.
In practice all draft passes upwardly through the central passage of the bowl 1,
and striking the underside of the dome is deflected into the bottom of the bowl carrying with it particles of oil received from the passage bet-ween the dome and the crown member. Inasmuch as the bowl gets very hot complete combustion is maintained in the manner indicated. I would have it understood, however, that it is not necessary for the bowl to be heated to start the burner inasmuch as an asbestos annulus 13 can be used in the bottom of the bowl to form a wick which can be initially saturated with oil and ignited. The wick 13, however, is not essential to the proper operation of the burner.
Any kind of hydrocarbon that willpass through the feed pipe can be used in my novel burner. 7
Among the practical advantages of my novel burner is the fact that a hot fire may be provided in less time than is required in the starting of a fire with kindling. It will also be noted that my novel burner may be readily installed in any heating stove or furnace after the grate is removed therefrom. Moreover the burner is not liable to be clogged, and when desired the crown member may be removed for the removal of sediment, The strong draft through the central passage of the bowl and down into the bowl is materially advantageous inasmuch as it operates to blow the flame outwardly against the wall of the heater body, whereby the heat is used to the best advantage.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.

overhanging the central portion of the bowl and having a central aperture to receive oil from the' pipe, a crown-member of inverted bowl shape arranged on and spaced from the dome; the spacing of the dome and crown member being effected by radial, equi-distant ribs on one of said elements, extending from said central aperture to the edges of the elements, and the passages intermediate of the ribs being clear throughout from said aperture to the edges of the elements, and a strap member transversely secured to the bottom of the bowl having a central perforation therein for receiving said supply pipe whereby the said pipe is maintained centrally within the said bowl passage. 1
