Be it lrnown that I, vJosiirri KEEGAN, a citizen of theUnited States, and resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Sounding Device, of which the following is a full, clear, andeXact description.
My invention relates to a sounding device, and aims to provide certain new and useful improvements in connection lwith a toy of this character. A
It is an object of the present invention` to provide a device` yof the character stated which may be readily and, economicallyconstructed, and in which the working .parts will be reduced to a minimum, the said device being capable offbeing manufactured at a nominal ligure, and beingl extremely efiicient inaction. Still another object of the present invention is the construction of a sounding device which maybe 4operated ybyna child and without any danger of injury to the .operator. j n
Still further objects Aof this invention will appear in the annexed specification taken 1n connection with the drawings, which latter illustrate one practical embodiment of the same, and in which;

Figure 4c is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 1r-4 and in the direction of the arrows indicated in Figure 3.
It will be seen in these views that the ref erence numeral 5 indicates the casing of the device which may be in any desirable shape and material, and which has a handle 6- rotatably attached to its body in a manner hereinafter described, so that the operator may grasp the handle, and by virtue of the saine being disposed at a point adjacent one end of the casing the latter may be whirled from the handle.
As has been shown in Figure 3 the interior of the casing 5 is preferably divided by means of the baflie plate 7 having one of its ends terminating adjacent a discharge opening 8, its opposite end being disposed to provide a space 9 and a further space suitable for the reception of an operating spool or drum 10. Thus if a coil of material 11 is disposed in the space y9.and the ends of this coilkare passed` around the spool 10 and engaged by the same by meansof ajsuitable frictional surface 12 the end of the material being extended along. the baiile 7 and through the discharge opening 8, it will be understood that an operator may `whirl the casing 5 by means` of the handle (Sand if the latter 'is operatively attached to the spool l() it will be obvious that the spoolA will be fed from the ooillll around the spool 10 and thence along the baffle 7 and out of the discharge opening 8. y v n y Now with a view of establishing this connection it will be noted, reference heing had to Figures 1 and 3, that the handle 6 has a suitable ,type of gear 13 attached to its body rand this gear meshes `with a second gear 14 attached to the spool 10., Thusthe result desired ywill be achieved. Also by securing ajratchet wheell to the body ofthe handle 6 and by postioning aspring pressed hammer 16 adjacent to the ratchetnwheel, it
will b Obvious that' an Operator upon. actuating the ydevicel in the manner aforementioned, will produce a periodic retraction and release of the hammer 16.
Further it will be noted that the coil of material 11 is preferably in the nature of a strip of caps, and a portion of the baiie 7, at a point preferably intermediate the space 9 and drum 10 is enlarged to provide an anvil 17 and thus it will be understood that by means of the operation of the hammer aforedescribed the caps will be exploded.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that all of the objects of this invention are accomplished in that an easy and simple device is constructed, and may be operated by a child without any fear of danger to the operator, although a great amount of noise will obviously be produced by the successive explosions resulting when the device is operated.
Finally it will be understood that numerous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the scope of my claims; which are;
1. A sounding device including a casing, an anvil within said casing, a hammer also within said casing, means for feeding a detonating strip, means for actuating said hammer, and means for actuating the two means last-mentioned periodically.
2. A sounding device including a casing, cap detonating means within said casing,
and a handle rotatably secured to said casing, and operatively connected to said cap detonatingmeans the detonating means having` associated therewith co-operant liXed and movable parts 'for feeding a detonatiiistrip, the latter part beingoperatively connected to the handle. Y
3. A sounding device including a casing, ca p detonating means Within said casing, a handle rotatably secured to said casing, said detbnating means including a hammer periodically operated by the handle, means alsoperiodically operated by the handle for feeding,` a detonating; strip, and operative connections from the handle to said two means whereby the hammer operates a plurality of times for each operation of said feeding` means.
' 4. A sounding device including* a casing, a baffle within said casing, a portion of said baiiie providing an anvil, a spring,- pressed hammer for 3o-operating with said anvil. and means for retracting and releasing,` said hammer. e
5. A sounding device including a casing, a baliie Within said casing, a portion of said balile providing an anvil, a spring pressed hammer adapted to cooperate With said anvil, means kadapted to 'operatively support a strip of caps and guide said strip to pass over said anvil, means for opera-'ting said last named means, and means for alternately releasing and retracting said hammer.
6. A sounding device including a casing lraving, an opening, a baille Within said cas ing` to provide an anvil and a space for the reception of a strip ot caps, a spool rotatably supported Within said casing, a spring; pressed hammer for cooperating,` with. said anvil, said strip passing around said spool, and means i'orrotating said spool and effecting,- a retraction and release of said hammer.
7. A sounding` device including a casing` having an opening, a baie Within said casing to provide an anvil and a space for the reception of a strip of caps, a spool rotatably supported Within said casing, a spring pressed hammer for co-operating with said anvil, said strip passing around said spool, a handle rotatably secured to said casing, a ratchet Wheel connected to said handle7 for co-operating `With said hammer, said handle being connected to said spool.
8. A sounding device including ya casing having an opening, a balile Within said cas ing to provide an anvil and a space for the reception of a strip of caps, a spool rotatably supported Within said casing, a spring,r pressed hammer, said'strip passing around said spool, a handle rotatably securedto said casing, a ratchet Wheel connected to said handle for co-operation With said hammer,
said spool being also' connected to said' handle and carrying a frictional device for feeding said strip.
