To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALnNiUs, residing at Rock Springs, county of Sweetwater, and State of Wyoming, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Retorts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the volatilization of vapors and oils from oil shale and sand, and it consists in an improved apparatus or retort for collecting the vapors and gases arising from the oil shale and sand being treated, and drawing them off through pipes by suction, and finally condensing the vapors and gases into oi A further'object of the invention is to effect a complete agitation of the oil shale and sand while being treated to eil'ect a more complete separation.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the rotary agitator or conveyor.
The numeral 1 indicates a stationary hollow cylinder, or hollow cylindrical drum, having arranged therebeneath a plurality of fire-boxes 2, 3, 4 and 5. Arranged at the forward end in the root of the hollow cylindrical drum or retort is a feed-hopper 6 provided with a plurality of slide-valves 7, 7. At rear of the drum, and on the lower side thereof is an outlet 8 provided with a plurality of regulating-valves 9, 9. The numeral 10 indicates a shaft rtiatably mounted longitudinally of the dru or retort 1. Mounted along the shaft at intervals are a. plurality of spaced cross-arms 11 acting to convey the oil shale and sand longitudinally of the drum, the material being raised from. the botto of the drum by the spirally-arranged b' LEA-"S or conveyors consisting preferably oi corrugated angle-irons 12, thereby keeping the material stirred up as it is conveyed. along the drum, causing the gases to rise from the heated material.
To retard more or less the progress of the material passing through the drum, preferably provide a plurality of stops 13 placed at intervals along the spiral angleirons 12, in such way as to form buckets or compartments under the angle-irons. In this manner, the material is raised from the picked up and reouter end thereof serves as a means of to tation.
As stated, by agitating the heated material in this manner, gases arise therefrom, and to arrest these gases I arrange a dome or chamber 16 at the top of the drum and.

which in turn is connected by a pipe 19 to a suction fan 20, by 'which the gases are drawn from the dome 16. From the suction fan the gases pass through the pipe 21 leading to a series of condensing-coils 22 located in a cooling-tank 23 where the gases are condensed into oil, and pass from the coils to a collecting-tank 24.
Connected to the oil tank 24 by a pipe 25 is a water-cooler 26, which in turn is connected by pipe 27 to container 28, where the dry gases are collected. 4

The rotary conveyor being in operation picks up the sand from the bottom of the drum, and owing to the spiral construction of the buckets or conveyors thereon, the material is caused to travel longitudinally of the retort and upwardly along the side walls thereof until these buckets reach such an angle that the material is ejected therefrom, falling back to the bottom of the drum where it is again picked up by the following buckets, carried still further,- and so on till it I 'tlnally reaches the tear or outer end of the drum where it is ejected through lfii outlet 8 leading from the drum ton suitable rece tacle.
