Be it lrnown that l, MARTIN Nvsfrnoiwi, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county orp Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useul improvements in Record Files for Fhonographs, of which the following is a specication.

rhis invention relates to phonograph cabinets and more particularly to the 4storage of disk records therein.

The primary object ot the invention is to provide record holding means which may be readily shifted between horizontal and vertical positionsy so that th'e'records may be vstored flatwise in horizontal position and readily shifted to vertical position to permit access thereto for withdrawal and replacement.

Further objects of the invention are to provide for storing records in horizontally slidabie drawers which collectively present a finished and attractive appearance and which may be separately pulled out in the manner usual with drawers to present the records in convenient position for inspection and selection; to sustain the reco-rd holding tray in a novel manner in the drawer so that it may be readily shifted between horizontal and vertical positions; to provide novel and simple means for limiting the outward movement of the drawer and the swinging movement of the tray; and to provide holding means for compactly storing the records and which will readily extend to permit access to the records when required.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating a selected embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of one type ot phonograph cabinet showing a record drawer open and the tray disposed in vertical position.

A plurality o1c strips 16 are secured on the inner side walls 16 of the cabinet to it in corresponding grooves 17 in the sides-18 ofthe drawers 19 and form supporting guides for the drawers which are slidablymovable in a horizontal plane from closed position within the cabinet to open position projecting in front oitthe cabinet as shown inbreken lines in Fig. 2. Pins 2O are slidably arranged in vertically disposed openings 1'9 in the sides of the drawers adjacent to the rear ends thereof and these pins are supported by and ride upon the top face or the guides 16, when the drawer is being pulled Youtward, until ythe drawer has nearly reached the limit of its outward movement, whereupon the pins drop by gravity into the recesses 21 adjacent the front ends of the vguides and engage the shoulders 22 which formv stops limiting` the outward travel of the drawer' (Figs. 4, 7).

Each drawer Acomprises a front wall 24, a rear wall 25 andthe side walls 18 and 1s entirely open at the bottom. A record holding tray 23 is swiveled in the Yiront and rear walls of the drawerv between the sides or the tray on pivot pins 26 and 27 which are preferably located adjacent the lower edge of the walls of the drawer-ani tray. These pins are preferably iiXed in the wal-ls o't' the drawer and the pin 27 projects into an opening provided for it in the rear wall 27 of the tray-while the pin 26 engages an arcuate slot 28 in the front wall 26501: the tray, 'the slot being provided to facilitate the'insertion of the tray in the drawer in assembling the parts, and also in the removal of the tray from the drawer whenever it becomes necessary. rFixe pivot pins 26, 27 are preferably located at the right (taci-ng the cabinet) of the center of the drawer and tra'y so that the tray will be eceentrically pivoted in the drawer to facilitate thev swinging of the tray.

A stop pin 29 is secured in one of the walls of the drawer, as the rear wall 25 (Fig. 5), and it projects into an arcuate slot 29 kin the rear wall 27 of the tray. This pin permits the tray to swing between its horizontal storage position as shown in full lines in Fig. 3 to vertical position as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3 and also in full lines in Fig. l. A stay rod 30 is secured to the front and rear walls 26 27 of the tray adjacent the upper edges thereof close to the side wall 35 and a swinging bail 3l is similarly located at the opposite side 32 of the tray which is kopen, as will be noted in Figs. 3 and 8, this side forming the top of the tray when the latter is swung to vertical position. The stay rod 30 and the bail 3l retain the records in the tray when the latter is swung to vertical position and the bail 3l automatically swings outward under the pressure of the records or by pressure applied thereto to spread the records apart at the top for ready inspection, as indicated in broken lines in Figs. 2 and 3 and in full lines in Fig. 1.

The stop shoulders 22 are so located that the drawer may be withdrawn sufficiently to permit the tray to be swung between horizontal and vertical position without contacting with the front face of the cabinet or the ot-her drawers above or below. A recess 33 is preferably' provided in the rear face of the front wall 9A of the drawer, at the bottom thereof, to accommodatethe lingers and facilitate the movement of the drawer. The

f front wall of the ldrawer is recessed at 34 at the front and upper edge thereof to facilitate engaging the ingers with the recess 33 of the drawer next above.

l/Vhen the doors l5 are opened, the drawers present a finished andpattractive appearance leaving no open spaces. Any drawer may be pulled out to the limit of its movement and then by a slight pressure upon the tray at the right of its pivotal aXis facing the cabinet the tray will easily swing from horizontal to vertical position and ordinarily the bail 31 will swing open under the pressure of the records stored in the tray and the records will be suHicient-ly separated at the top for inspection, removal and replacement. lt is important to store disk records flatwise because they are liable to warpor become distorted if stored on edge.

My invention provides novel means whereby the records are stored iiatwise and which permit the records to be readily swung to upright position so that they may be easily inspected, removed and replaced. To return the tray to storage position in the drawer, pressure is applied to the upper portion thereof and, the tray being well balanced in the drawer, it will swing back to horizontal position so that the drawer can be readily pushed back into place in the cabinet.

My invention provides a very convenient means for storing disk records and for displaying them in order that selections may be 'made for playing. lt entirely avoids the necessity for handling albums which must be removed from the cabinet and which are somewhat cumbersome and present other disadvantages. lt also presents advantages over otherv forms of record holders which are slidably arranged in the cabinet, but hold the records on edge. rihe invention may be made at comparatively low cost, it is free from parts which are complicated or dificult to manufacture, it is easily manipulated and it enables the storage of record disks flat in drawers which add to the ornamental and attractive appearance of the cabinet. l may use any kind of separating or spacing sheets of any suitable material to prevent the records from contacting one with another and to accord with any approved filing system.

ln the drawings I have "illustrated an embodiment of the invention which has been found 'to be satisfactory for the purpose but .it may be that changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts will be necessary or desirable to meet different conditions and l reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.

l claim:

l'. ln combination, a cabinet, a skeleton drawer consistingof sides, front and back, means to support said drawer permitting it to slide into and out of said cabinet parallel wvith the base of said cabinet and a tray pivoted to the front and back of said drawer and adapted to swing between horizontal and vertical position, said tray adapted to lie horizontal within said drawer when the latter is slid into said cabinet.

2. In combination, a cabinet, a skeleton drawer consisting of sides, front and back, means to support said drawer permitting it to slide into and out of said cabinet parallel with the base of said cabinet, means to restrict the movement of said drawer including a pin within said drawer adapted to enga-ge a stop in said cabinet, and a tray pivoted to the front and back of said drawer and adapted to swing between horizontal and vertical positions.

3. The combination of a cabinet, a skeleton drawer mounted in said cabinet parallel to the base thereof and adapted to slide into and out of said cabinet, a tray pivoted to said drawer on an axis extending in the direction of said sliding movement, said tray adapted to lie in said drawer when the latter is within said cabinet. but capable of swinging transversely to said drawer when the latter is drawn out of said cabinet.

The combination of a cabinet, a bottomless drawer supported to slide in the cabinet, a record holding tray having an opening in one wall and an arcuate slot in the opposite wall, and pivot pins in walls of the drawer engaging said opening and Said slot in the tray to pivotally support the tray in the drawer.

5. The combination of a cabinet7 a drawer supported to slide in'the cabinet, a record holding tray having an engaging slot, an

opening and a guide slot in opposite walls, pvot pins in opposite walls of the drawer engaging said opening and said engaging 1o slot, and a pvot pin in one wall of the drawer' engaging said guide slot to limit 'the swinging movement of the tray.
