Be it known that I, HARRY A. NU'ITER, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Seymour, inA the county of Jackson and State I of. Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Expansion-Socket Wrenches, of which the -followin isa full, clear, and exact description.
y invention relates to expansion socket wrenches, and one .of the objects of the 1nvention is to provide a device of this charhold bits or other tools of various sizes. l' Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is adapted to beA used wi'h brace or drill sockets of various sizes.
A further purpose ofthe invention. is to provide a device ofthis character which 1s not only strong and durable, butalso 1s simple in construction and inexpensive in mannfacture.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

- eferring to the drawings more in detail, numeral 1 indicatesa body member which is screw threaded for a portion of its length, and screw threadedly engaged therewith is a clamping sleeve 2.
A gripping member 3 has a projection 4 thereon, and the projection screw threadedly engages the wall of a recess provided in the body member. Further means for attaching the gripping member to the' body member and for preventing relative rotation between the two members consists of a lock-screw 5 which screw threadedly engages the body member and the gripping member; locknuts 6 being disposed on the end of the lock-screw. ,y
The gripping member is shown a`scarr`y4 ing four resilient arms indicated by numeral 7 These arms, when not restrained,
spring outwardly to the position shown in Figure 4. While I'have shown four of the resilient arms, it will be understood, of course, that a greater or lesser number may be employed. On the end of each resilient arm is' a jaw 8, and each jaw is provided with a right angular channel 9.
The operation of the apparatus described is as follows:
By rotating the clamp-in member to move it to the left (Figure 2) t e spring arms 7 are released and' automatically spring outwardly. A bit or other tool is then placed in the jaws carried by the resilient arms and the clampin sleeve 1s rotated to carry it to the right igure 2), whereby the clamp-ing sleeve engages the resilient arms, forcing them towar s each other, and the jaws grip the bit or other tool and hold it firmly.
