Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of and Means for Producing Stucco Columns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a method of and means for producing stucco columns and has for its principal object to provide a method for producing stucco columns and the like of various diameters and entasis in a simple and inexpensive manner, and to a device for accomplishing the same.
With'the above and other objects in view as will be readily understood, the invention will be hereinafter fully described, reference being had to the; accompanying drawings, and the novel features'thereof will be dis-.
tinctly pointed out in the appended claims.

In producing columns of plastic material in accordancewith my invent on, a sheet of absorbent paper is wrapped upon a cylindrical fornibetween annular flanges thereon. and over the sheet of paper is wound wire in the form of a coil extending from one end to the other and then back upon itself as said cylindrical form revolves. As sa1d coil of wire revolves a layer of plastic material is spread upon the same toconform to a guide for thickness and longitudinal curvathen -a wire is wound in the form of a coil over said layer of plastic material from endtoiend thereon and back upon itself, and then a layer of plastic material is spread over the second mentioned coil of wire in conformance with a guide for determining -the thickness and longitudinal curvature thereof to give a predetermined entasis to the column. The column is brought. to a standstill and allowed to set, andwhen set is removed from said cylindricalform.' 1
Any means for producing a columnfof plastic material in the manner described may be employed. A device of simple construc tion for accomplishing said purpose as illustrated in the drawings, consists of a frame comprising a head end 1 and a similar foot end 2, which are supported by pairs of legs 3 and 4. A shelf 5 is carried by angular iron bars 6 and 7 which are fixed to said legs, and said shelf serves to brace said legs in their upright position. Each of the ends 1 and 2 is-provided with a central bearing 8 and 9 for rotatably supporting a shaft 10 to which is fixed a cylindrical form 11, preferably of any suitable collapsibletype. To this cylindrical form I are fixed,v removable annular flanges 12 and 13 of any suitabledesign. Shaft 10 is rotated in any suitable manner, as for instance by-means of a driving belt passing around any of the different diameter pulleys indicated by 16. Said shaft with the cylindrical form thereon may be lifted from its bearings 8 and 9 after the bearing caps 14: and15 have been removed.
The ends 1 and 2 are provided at each side of their bearings 8 and 9 with horizontal fiat surfaces 17 andglS and vertical faces 19 and 20. Pairs of spaced angle bars at 21 and 22 are islidably supported uponthe horizontal flat surfaces *17 and 18 of the ends 1 and2,
27 which is used as a scraper aswill be hereinafter explained. The pairs of angle bars 21 and 22 are movedtoward and away from the longitudinal center of the machine by means of adjusting screws 28 and 29 which are rotatably mounted in said pairs of angle bars with .collarsBO and 31 at each side. thereof and a separate collar 32 therebetween. Said adjusting screws are threaded in the openings as 33in the vertical-faces 19 and 20 of the ends 1 and 2 and are provided with a hand-wheel '34 for convenience in turning the same. 'The adjusting rods 23 and 24 are. adapted to be moved and set'at various elevations in the pairs of angle bars 21 and 22 by means of pairs of wing-nuts 35 and. 36, whichare mounted upon said adjusting rods and engage washers 37 and 38 above and belowsaid pairs of angle bars. The upper ends of the adjustment rods 23 and 2a are provided with rounded heads 39, which are adapted to be moved lon itudinally in suitable groove in each of the guide rails 25 and 26. The construction described allows for setting the guide rails nearer or further apart and at various elevations and different longitudinal curvatures, or portions of the'same straight and other portions curved or inclined.
To produce a stucco column in accordance with my invention by the means described, a suitable cylindrical form as 11 with the annular flanges l2 and 13 arranged thereon the proper distance apart is selected, and the shaft 10 carrying said cylindrical form is placed in the bearings 8 and 9. The guide rails 25 and 26 are adjustedas to distance apart by means of the adjusting screws 28 and 29, and as to height and longitudinal curvature by means of the pairs of wing nuts 35 and 36, for applying the first thick ness of plastic material upon the cylindrical form 11, all as hereinbefore described. A sheet of absorbent paper 41 is wrapped upon the cylindrical form 11 between the angular flanges 12 and 13, and then a wire 42 is wound over the sheet of paper in the form of a coil extending from end to end and then back upon itself as said cylindrical form is revolved. Next a layer of suitable plastic material 43 is applied over the coiled wire of a greater thickness than desired and above the guide rails 25 and 26, which surplus thickness is removed by manually operating the scraper 27 upon said guide rails as the cylindrical form revolves. Said scraper is preferably held at an angle, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and moved transversely upon the guide rails as it is advanced thereon. The
guide rails 25 and 26 are again adjusted to a height and longitudinal curvature corresponding to the thickness of a second layer of plastic material and the entasis of the column tobe produced by means of the pairs of wing- nuts 35 and 36, as already described.
second coil of wire 44: is wound over the layer of plastic material 43 in the same manner as the wire 42', then a second layer of plastic material 45 is applied to the same greater in thickness than desired and above the last adjusted positions of the guide rails 25 and 26, and the scraper 27 is moved upon the guide rails in the manner described to remove the surplus thickness of plastic ma terial. The shaft 10 with the column'thereon is removed from the machine, and the column is allowed to become set, then is removed from the cylindrical form 11,- and is ready for use.
Having, fully described my invention, whatl' claim is: a

The method of producing a column of plastic material which consists in applying absorbent material over a revolving form, winding wire around the absorbent material, applying plastic material over the wire, and removing a portion of the plastic mate rial by actuating a strip transversely and longitudinally to the axis of revolution.

The method of producing a column of plastic material which consists in applying absorbent material over a revolving form, winding wire around the absorbent material, applying plastic material over the wire and removing a portion of the plastic material by actuating a strip transversely and longitudinally to the axis of revolution upon guidesat each side thereof.

The method of producing a column of plastic material which consists in applying absorbent material over a revolving form, winding wire around the absorbent material, applying plastic material over the wire and removing a portion of the plastic material by actuating a strip transversely and longitudinally to the axis of revolution upon guides at each side thereof for giving a predetermined size and entasis to the column.
6. The method of producing a column of plastic material which-consists in wrapping a sheet of absorbent paper over a revolving form, winding wire around the sheet of paper, applying plastic material over the wire, and removing a portion of the plastic mate rial.
7 In a means for producing a column of plastic material, the combination of a frame, a form rotatably supported in the frame, a guide for a means for removing a portion of the plastic material applied tosaid form for producing a column, the guide being arranged longitudinallyof the form,'means for adjusting the guide transversely and means for adjusting the guide vertically, substantially as described.
