Be it known that I, JAMES A; TAYLOR, a resident of the city of Galt, in the county oi? Vvatcrloo, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful hm provements in Ladders, of which the follow ing is a specification. I
This invention relates to ladders made up of a number of similar units, and which are hung" from a roof, window or other elevated position, and my object is to devise an i1nproved construction which will be simple to construct, and which will have the requisite stiffness to enable the ladder to he placed in position from the ground.
I attain my object by means of the con structions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which-- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my improved ladder;
Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same;

In the drawing like numerals of reference indicate corresponding; parts in the different figures.
The ladder will comprise a number of similar sections, the number and size of the sections depending entirely on the position in which the ladder is used the use to which it is put.
Each section is formed of an integral piece of wire comprising the rung 1 and the up wardly extending sides 2. In the upper section of the ladder the sides 2 will terminate in hooks 3 adapted to catch on a roof, window ledge, or other suitable object.
It should be noted, however, that at the point of connection between the rung and sides a small loop 4: is formed.
The upper end of each side 2 is bent behind the rung 1 and in front of the side 2 of the adjacent section and thence rearwardly,
which it is applied,

While for short ladders the construction shown possessessuflicient stifiness to enable it to be placed in position from below, for longer ladders it is preferable to provide additional stiffening means, which might be of various forms. The preferred form is shown in Figs. 4 and 5 in which a channel shaped stiffening bar 8 is shown, the ends of the spacing loops 5 being received in the channel, and the sides of the channel being bent inwardly between the sides of the loops as at 9 to prevent the withdrawal of the loop.
In Fig. 6 the stiffening rod is simply a wire or slight bar, which is secured to the ends of the loops by clamping members similar to the clamps 6.
In Fig. 7 I show the use of a wooden bar 10 as thestiffening member, which is secured to the spacing loop 5 by a hook or staple 11.. i The stiffening members may be the whole length of the ladder, or may be long enough to connect any number of sections as may be desired. I
From the foregoing description and drawings, it will be noted that the spacing; loops 5 are used to provide stiffness in the ladder, that the various sections of the ladder are so connected that there is no danger of them pulling apart; that there is no strain on the spacing loops; and that when the stifi'ening bars are employed a very stiff ladder is secured which may easily be placed in position from below.
As the lower end of the ladder will usually be a short distance above the ground, 1 pro ride at each side of the lowermost section a member'll' to which another short ladder may be secured. A ladder comprising a plurality of sections of similar construction each section being formed of an integral piece of metal comprising a rung and two sides, the free end of each side passin -behind the rung and in front of the side or; the adjacent section adjacent the rung and then bent rearwardly to form a spacing" loop, the free end ot the loop being secured to the side of the adjacent section a distance from the rung.
2. A ladder comprising a plurality oi sections of similar construction, each section being formed of an integral piece of metal comprising a rung and two sides loop being formed at the junction of each side with the rung, the free end of each side passing behind the rung and in front of the side of the adjacentse'ction adjacent the rung and secured to the side of the adjacent section a distance from the rung.
3. A ladder comprising a plurality of sections of similar construction each section being formed of an integral piece of metal comprising a rung and 'two sides the free end of each side passing behind the rung and in front of the side of the adjacent section adjacent therung and then bent rear- Wardly to form a spacing loop the free end 1 the loop being secured to the side of the adjacent section a distance from the rung; and astiflening member of channel-shape in cross section secured to a pluralityot said spacing; loops the legs of the channel being: inwardly bent to engage the spacing; loops.
