The concrete or other like filling material [ills the interior of the tie, surrounding the housings 19 and holding them in place and is a permanent fixture and will not interfere with the operative mechanism, nor prevent such mechanism being removed, if necessary.
A tie as above described, is comparatively a simple and cheap construction in consideration of its durability, and whenv once installed, it remains a permanent fixture. Old rails may be removed and new rails inserted, without disturbing the tie, and when j former is much stronger in proportion to its weijht, and will not readily break.
aving thus described my invention what I claim is l. A metal railway tie, having an upperv rail bearing surface, closed sides and ends, said upper vsurfaces having spaced. openings, rail clamps for said openings having a body located within the tie and fulcrumed against the edges of the openings, and a rail engaging head projecting above the tie, a bolt within the tie having a threaded portion engaging a threaded opening in the body of the outer clamp, the inner end of the bolt en gaging the body of the opposite or inner clamp to impart a rocking movement to both clamps to and from the rail.
2. A metal railway tie of shell-like construction comprising closed top, sides and ends, said top or upper rail bearing surface having spaced openings, rail clamps operatively fulcrumed therein, a bolt within the tie engaging that portion of the clamps within the tie adapted to adjust said clamps with respect to the rails, said ends of the tie having angular openings, caps therefor having angular bosses for said openings, means connected with said bosses to engage tho bolts to prevent their turning, housings for the bolts and clamps, and a filling material covering the housings and lling the interior of the tie.
