ANDREW matey, or MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
SPREADING ROLLER FOR WEB MATERIALS.
Application filed October 25, 1921. Serial No. 510,381.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW LIVESEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 3 and 5 Brierley Street, London Road,
5 Manchester, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spreading Rollers for Web Materials, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rollers, bars, or
the like, for use in opening, scouring, or
stretching, textile, or other, fabrics or materials, the said rollers, bars, or the like, be-
, ing of the kind provided with a periphery,
or active surface which is serrated or equivalently formed, or constructed, the object of my invention being to provide an improved 1cinstruction ofsuch rollers, bars, or the springs, is, or are, coiled, or wound, or otherwise placed, round a roller, bar or the like, and'between the coils, or convolutions, of the said spring,.or springs, is, or are, coiled, or wound, a strip, or strips, ofrubber, or other resilient, or equivalent, material, The ends of the rubber strip or strips, are securedto the roller, bar, orthe like, and the spring, or springs, is, or are, coiled, or wound, to any desired pitch so as to be in tension, or atrest, when in place on the said roller, bar, or the like, and therefore to act by compression, or pitch, to hold and maintain convolutions of the rubber, or equivalent, strip, or strips, between the coils, or convolutions, in place on the roller, bar,
or the like. i
In the accompanying drawing I have shown a broken side elevation of a bar in Which my invention is embodied in one form.
According to my invention a spring, or
In the preferred construction here shown, two springs a and a are employed one or which is coiled, or wound, right-handed, and the other coiled, or wound, left-handed, upon the body 0, and between the coils, or convolutions, of each of these springs is, or are, placed a strip, or strips, of rubber, or other resilient material, of such cross-section as to give the necessary grip, or friction, upon the fabric, or material. Two such strips are shewn at b and b in the accompanying drawing these being secured to the body a of the roller by means of the screws cl.
What I claim is:
1. A bar for opening or stretching fabrics, or the like, comprising helices of resilient material wound upon the bar and secured at its opposite ends thereto, in combination with ahelical spring, the convolutions of which alternate with the convolutions of the resilient material and serve to maintain the latter in place.
2. A bar for opening or stretching fabrics. or the like, comprising helices ofresilient material wound in opposite directions and in series upon the bar and secured thereto. in combination with helical springs of oppo site hand cooperating with the resilient helices, the convolutions of the springs alternating with the convolutions of the resilient material and serving to maintain the latter in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ANDREW LIVESEY.
