SAFETY LOCK.
Application filed October 28, 1921.. Serial No. 511,129.
To all whom may concern Be it known that l, Srnriin llr'inr, citizen of Hungary residing at Manville, in the county oi? Somerset and State of New dersey, have invented certain no and useful lmproven'ients in Safety Locks of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks for use on doors, and it has for an object to providea novel and simple form oi? lock which cannot readily be picked.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the va rious novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. l of the drawings is a part face view with the cover plate removed, and part longitudinal section, of a lock constructed according to the invention the sectional portion of this view being taken along the plane indicated by the line 11 on Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken .along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is adetail side view of the key.
Fig. 4: is an end view of the key.
As here shown my improved lock comprises a casing 10 of generally rectangular shape and adapted to be fitted in a mortise in the edge of the door a portion of. the latter being indicated at 11. in Fig. 2. The casing is provided with the usual apertured lugs 12 to receive fastening screws. ()ne face oi? the casing is in the form of a removable plate 13 which may be secured in place by screws threaded into apertured bosses 14 on the opposite wall of the casing.
Within the casing 10 is a rotatable barrel 18 which extends between the two face walls of the casing and is journaled therein by means of trunnion extensions 19 fitting snugly in suitable apertures in the said walls. This barrel 18 has a short arm 20 projecting therefrom at one end thereof and provided with a fixed pin 21 engaging in front of a disk 22, fixed to the shank 23 of a bolt 24c. Behind the arm 20 the barrel 18 is enclosed by a fixed sleeve-like member 26 in which the barrel fits snugly, this member having an axially projecting lug 27 against which the arm bears when the bolt is in locking position. The head oi the bolt projects tlnfough, and is suitably guided in, the Front edge wall of the casing 10, while its rear end is slidably guid d in an apertured lug 29 .tormed in the casing 10. The bolt is urged to locking position by means otlf' a coiled expansion spring 30 surrounding the shank 23 at the rear oi the disk 22 and hearing be tween the latter and the lug 29, the pin 21 limiting the forward n'ioveinent oi. the bolt.
The barrel 13 has mounted for radial movement in the wall thereof a pair of ion gitudinally spaced plunger pins 33 of different lengths and having diminished inner ends 34 which project into the axial opening 35 in the barrel these pins being guided in suitable complementary shaped borings in the barrel. These pins 33 are pressed inwardly by means of levers 37 pivoted each at one end as at 38 to the casing 10 and having their opposite ends turned laterally as at 37 to bear on the outer ends of the pins 33, the levers being so arran ed and pivoted that the movement of their end elements 37 will be substantially radial of the barrel 18. The levers 37 are pressed against the pins 33 by means of: flat springs 39 fixed thereto at one end and hearing at opposite ends against the adjacent edge wall of the casing. The lever ends 37 pass through suitable slots in the sleeve member 26, these slots Widening at their inner ends into recesses adapted to receive the ends of the pins 33.
The barrel 18 has an axial opening 35 leading thereinto from the end thereof which faces toward the outer side of the door when the lock is in position, the opposite end of the barrel having screwed thereinto an operating handle 41-2 which projects through a suitable opening leading from the inner face of the door into the mortise in which the lock is set. The outer face of the door is provided with a key-hole d3 registering with the barrel opening 35. A scutcheon plate 4% may be placed on the door to protect the edges of the key-hole.
The outer end of the barrel opening 35 is somewhat enlarged as shown to provide a shoulder 45 adapted to limit inward movement of the key, the opening 35 being threaded inwardly of the shoulder 4-5 for a short distance as at 46.
The key used in connection with my improved lock is shown in detail in 3 and d and comprises a cylindrical stem 50 having a peripheral liange 51 adapted to bear on the shoulder 45, and a screw threaded portion 52 adapted to engage the barrel threads 46. Toward its inner end the key is flattened of? at one side in stepped formation to provide a pair oil wards 54L of successively diminished height-s which register with the plunger pins 33 when the key is screwed home into the barrel 18. The height of these wards, and the length of pins 38, are so arranged that when the wards engagethe pins the outer ends of the latter are brought flush with the surface of barrel 1.8 so that the latter can be freely rotated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the llnited States is as follows:
l. A, look comprising acasing, a boltslidable therein, a sleeve element lixed in the casing, a barrel rotatal ile in said sleeve and projecting at one end therebeyend, an arm fixed to the projecting end of the barrel and extending across the end of the sleeve wall and having retraetive engagement with the said bolt, a pair of plunger pins slidab-le in radial recesses in the barrel, and a pair of locking levers extending through openings in said sleeve into said recesses and pressing said pins inwardly, said levers having transversely turned ends arranged to swing substantially transversely of the barrel, said p ins being adapted to be pressed outwardly by a key to a position with their outer ends flush with the circumferential face of the barrel.
2. A look comprising a casing, a bolt slidable therein, a sleeve element fixed in the casing, a barrel rotatable in the sleeve and projecting at one end therebeyond, an arm fixed to the projecting end of the barrel and extending across the end of the sleeve wall, a disk fixed to the belt, a pin fixed to said arm and extending parallel to the barrel axis, a spring pressing said disk against the pin, a lug on said sleeve forming a stop for the said arm, and releasable locking means applied to said barrel.
3. A look coinprising a casing, a bolt slidable therein, a barrel r ta=table in the casing and having an arm adapted to ret "act the bolt by rotation oil? the barrel, ,said barrel having an axial opening extei'iding inward from one end thereof and screw threaded at its outer end to receive the threaded end ot a key, a handle fixed to the opposite end of the barrel, a pair of plunger pins slidable radially in the barrel and having diminished inner ends projecting into the axial opening therein adapted to be engaged and moved outwardly by the key, and a pair of locking levers pressing said pins inwardly.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed. my signature.
STEFAN KERI.
