BUTTON.
APPLICATION FILED QcT. 7, 1921.

FRANKLIN R. WHITE, F lATERBUtY, CONNECTCUT, ASSGNOR TO THE PATENT BUTTON COMPANY, 0F WATERBURY,
NECTICU'T.
CGNNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- BUTT ON.
Divided and this application filed October 7,
1921. Serial No. 506,056.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be 1t known that I, FRANKIAN R. WHITE,
Y a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have made and invented certain new and useful limprovements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buttons and particularly to that style or class wherein the fastener is formed as a part of or permanently secured to the head of the button, the present application forming a.part of my copending application, Ser. No. L163,188, filed April 21, 1921.
An object of the present invention is to provide a button composed of a head and fastener which may be easily and quickly secured to a fabric or other material either by hand or the action of an automatic button attaching machine.
A further object is to provide an article of the above-mentioned class which may be attached to material which requires considerable eifort to force the prongs of the fastener therethrough, the button being particularly adapted to withstand the forces and stresses without danger of collapsing or distortion of the body.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in the improved button illustrated. in the accompanying drawing and hereinafter described and claimed, and in such variations and modifications thereof as will. be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates, it being obvious that changes may be made within. the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical longitudinal section of a button having the characteristic features of my invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof, with portions of the cap removed;
Figure 3 is a view in vertical longitudinal section of a somewhat modified form of button, although embodying the characteristic :features of my invention; and
Figure i a view in vertical longitudinal section showing the button attached.
Figure 5 is a view showing my novel button attached to cloth or fabric and with a washer to prevent the prongs from cutting the fabric.
Referring speciiically to the several views, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, m improved button is formed with a head and pronged fastener B. rlhe head of the button is provided with a cap 10 and a body portion 11, the latter terminating at its lower end in the hub 12, across which eX- tends the base 13. The pronged fastener B is formed with the base 14 and downwardly extending prongs 15, the latter extending through suitable openings 16 formed in the base of the button hub, as illustrated in Figure 1, or extending through suitable openings 17, as shown in Figure 3, which openings are formed by the forcing of the prongs through an imperforate hub base.
After the pronged fastener has been forcibly driven into place with the base 14 thereof resting upon and contacting with the base 13 of the hub, the body of the button is inwardly crimped or swedged to form an inwardly extending rim or ledge 1S, which thus rigidly holds the pronged fastener in place and also engages the side walls of the anvil or filler against shifting or rattling. The cap 10 engages the upper surface of the anvil 19 and thus prevents any undue distortion of the body of the button as the prongs of the fastener are forcibly driven through the fabric or other material. to which the button is to be attached and turned or crimped upon themselves, as illustrated in Figure fi.
ln the modified form of button illustrated in Figure 3, the inward crimping of the hub of the button has been omitted and the filler 19 alone holds the pronged fasg tener B in place.
My improved form of button 'as thus described may be attached either by hand or by the use of an automatic button attaching machine. The prongs of the fastener may be curled or bent directly upon the fabric or material to which the button is attached, as shown in Figure 4f, or may be used in connection With a Washer 20 through which the prongs of the fastener extend after having pierced the cloth or fabric and upon which the prongs Will then be turned or curled, as illustrated in Figure 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A 'button of the class described comprising a body portion, a hub, a base, and a cap, a pronged fastener with the base thereofv resting' upon the aforementioned base, with the pronged portion thereof extending through the said base, and a filler extending between the base ofthe fastener andthesaid cap and contacting with the side walls of the hub.
2. A button of the class described coinextending ledge contacting with the base of the fastener and the side Walls of the filler. Signed at Vaterbury, in the county of Kew Haven and State of Connecticut, this fourth day of Cctober A. D. 1921.
