U i i i ll I-IAFJEY M. IiIONTOQTH, OF NEJTAEK, NEW] wanncn. I
Application filed December 16, 1919.
T 0 all 'lU/ZOWL it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. MoN'rooTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches of the type employing a pivoted jaw and a slidable jaw and has for its primary object the provision of means which will have a tendency to move the slidable jaw in the direction of the pivoted jaw when a pull is made on the handle in one direction and after the adjustment of the jaws to an object, thereby causing said jaws to increase their gripping action on the object as the pull on the handle is increased and further said pivoted jaw will release its grip when the handle is moved in the other direction, thus permitting the jaws to obtain another grip on the object which may be in the form of a pipe.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a wrench of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same,
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal sectional View illustrating the means of slidably conmeeting the sliding jaw to the pivoted jaw,
Figure 4C is a detail sectional view illustrating the spring bearing against the pivoted jaw.
Referring in detail to the drawing the Eerial No. 345,293.
numeral 1 indicates a handle having formed at one end a pair of relatively spaced ears between which is; pivoted one end of a pivoted jaw 3. The pivoted jaw 3 is provided with an active gripping face 4 at one end while its opposite end is reduced to form an ear 5 which is pivoted between the ears 2. The reduced end 5 is adapted to define shoulders 6 which abut the edges of the ears 2 under the influence of a spring 7 secured to the handle 1 between the ears 2 and bears against the end of the extension 5. Relatively spaced guide elements 8 are formed upon the jaw S and slidably receive a sliding jaw 9 which is provided with an active gripping face 10 and which cooperate with face 4 in gripping an object. Angular flanges 11 are formed upon the elements 8 to slidably retain the jaw 9 therein. The jaw 9 has formed thereon teeth 12 adapted to be engaged by an adjusting nut 13. The handle 1 at its end which carries the ears 2 has formed thereon a forwardly extending inclined extension 14 that terminates in close proximity to the sliding jaw 9 and carries a pin 15 on which is journaled the adjusting nut 18. The other end of the pin 15 is received within a recess or socket 16 formed in the jaw 3. The elements 8 and the reduced end 5 of the jaw 3 define a space 17 in which the adjusting nut 13 oper ates and meshes with the teeth 12 on the sliding jaw 9. The pin 15 is slidable within the recess or socket 16 which permits the extension le to move in the direction of the jaw 3 during the use of the device.
In operation, the jaws 8 and 9 are adjusted to a pipe or like object and a pull in one direction is made on the handle 1, which causes the latter to move on the pivot and this movement is transmitted to the jaw 9 by the nut 13, which causes the jaw 9 to move towards the pivot jaw 3, thereby causing the jaws to increase their gripping action on the pipe or object as the pull on the handle is increased, A pull on the handle in an opposite direction causes the 3 to swing on its pivot against the tension of the spring thereby releasing the gripping action of said jaws on the pipe or object permitting them to turn freely thereof with the handle so as to permit the jaws to obtain another grip on the pipe or object.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of partsmay be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventionas claimed.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim is A Wrench having a handle provided with an offset extension member, a" pivoted'jaw s member on said handle having a nut-receiving recess with an- 'open end across which saidextension is disposed, interfitting' and contacting shoulders on said members, said recess having its Walls angularly disposed,
anangularly disposed pin extending from one of said members into the recess, one of the walls at said recess having a socket for slip connection with and support of the free end of said pin, a nut in said recess journaled on said pin, a jaw slidable on said pivoted jaw having teeth in mesh with the nut, guide elements for the slidalole jaw 6X- tending from the pivoted jaw across said
