To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED J. KLINE, a citi- ZGIl of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Cards or Labels on Filing Units, of which the followin g is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for securing labels and cards for indexing and other purposes to filing units such as folders, envelopes, and the like, and which devices are sometimes termed tabs. The main object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which shall be simple in construction and economical in manufacture.

My invention differs from others of this class in embodying as its main portion, a flat member formed of a single thickness of sheet metal, and adapted to be fastened to the desired filing unit by suitable means. Another of the features of the invention resides in the separate means for alining and securing the main member on the top edge of the filing unit, and other important features relate to the card or label holding means.

The form of the invention I prefer to use to effect the above objects is illustrated in the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the preferred form of my invention as seen from the inside of the filing unit.

in the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the numeral 2 designates a portion of a file unit, which unit may be a folder composed of two sheets of cardboard joined by a cloth strip, an envelope for fil ing, or a large card, on which the indexing device or tab is mounted, T designates the indexing device or tab in a general way, and

3 refers to the indexing or other card or label held thereby.

The indexing device T embodies a hat member l which may be of any suitable form but is preferably made of thin sheet metal stamped out into a rectangular shape. Suitable means are provided for securing the member 4: to the filing unit 2, which means preferably are employed in the form of eyelets or tubular rivets 5 passed through holes 6 in the member 4:, and holes 7' in the member 2, and through washers 8 on the outside of the member i, and are then riveted over as at 9, holding the member & securely on the upper part of the filing unit. There is a considerable space between the top edge of the member 2 and the eyelets 5, and to secure the member l to the top part of the member 2 near the edge and also to aline said member 4 on said edge, suitable means are provided which may be of any workable form, but preferably I employ members such as the projections or hooks 10, formed out of the body of the member 4:, and which are adapted to hook over the top, edge 11 of the member 2, and thus fasten the member a securely to said top edge 11. The said hooks also aline the member 4 when assembling the same on the units 2, the under side of the hook resting on the edge 11.

Any suitable means may be provided for holding the cards or labels used for indexing and other purposes, but preferably 1 provide flanges such as 12 for the top and bottom edges of the cards, so that the cards can be slid in between the flanges endwise. I also provide suitable means to prevent en-dwise movement of the card after it moved into place, such means consisting preferably of books 13 which hold the transverse edges oi the card. 7'

The operation of slipping a card into place consists in bending it slightly so as to pass over the hook 18 at the end, then passing it between the flanges 12 and moving it until the edges are held therein. and the end comes against the hook 13 at the farther end of the device whereupon the other end of the card is bent back until it asses under the first-mentioned hook 13.

The modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 differs from the foregoing form in having hooks 1%, three in number at the upper side of the card and three more at the bottom side thereof, in place of the flanges 12. The operation of placing cards in the card.

In the modification illustrated in Figs. (3, 7, and 8, I form the flanges 12 as inFigs. 1 and 2, but for holding the cards in place laterally, I provide circular projections 15 which are formed integrally in the member 4: by stamping them with round punches. In place of the tWo projections or hooks 10, I provide one long member 16 Which is substantially the same cross section as the hooks 10, and said member 16 alines and holds the member 4 on the top edge of the filing unit 55. The said member 16 is substantially an elongated hook. v

This invention provides a convenient and interchangeable means for holding cards and labels, and results in a device wherein a minimum of metal is used in the manufacture, but at the same time providing adequate strength of the member itself, and sufhcient fastening means to hold it firmly on any desired file unit. The alining means provide for proper spacing and alinement'on said units and also assist in holding the device on the edges thereof in conjunction With the eyelets.

What I claim is 1. A device of the class described embodying a single-ply plate, label-holding means on the front side thereof, means to secure the device to one side of a filing unit which means have tWo spaced apart points of contact back of the label, effective to aline the device on and secure the same to the top edge of the filing unit and means near the bottom of the device to positively secure the same to the body of said unit.

2. A device 01 the class described embodying a single-ply plate, label-holding means on the front side of the filing unit, parallel therewith, and including a label-holding element below the top edge thereof, and means to secure the device to said unit which means includes alining and holding means having two points of contact back of the label and means near the'bottom of the device to secure the same to the filing unit at that part.

3. A device of the class described embodying a single-ply plate, label-holding means on the front side thereof, a portion of the plate forming a substantially continuous rear support for the label, and means to secure the device to one side of a filing unit Which include two short spaced apart overhanging projections or hooks back of the label stamped up from said rear label support of said plate, and common for both alining and securing the device and to the top edge of the filing unit and positive means near the bottom of the device to secure the same to the unit at that part.
