Be it known that I, HENRY W. Govm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northboro, in the county of Worcester'and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements Hing'es for Doors, of which the following is a specification. a
- This invention relates to improvements in doors and mechanism for opening and closing said doors. One of the objects of my invention is to provide meanscapable of hingedly 'mounting and supporting either longitud nal edge of a door within and upon adoor frame for the purpose of assuringthat thedoor may open to right angular 'positionad'j acent 'one or the other opposing sides of the door frame. With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the combination, arrangement and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

I In the drawings which are merely illustrative of my invention, 1 designates broadly a door frame or a frame having a doorway which may be provided with parting strips 2 so as to limit the movement of the door to closed position. 3 designates the threshold of the door and 4 designates the upper part 'of the door. It will be noticed that the front edges of the opposing sides of the door are cut away to provide the in-cut notches 57 for the reception of th nmings around the knobs on one side of the door when the door is fully opened in right angular position with respect to the door frame. Similarly should the other knob on the same side or other side of the door the opposite lon tudinal edge thereof be turned a proper distance the two terminals of the plungers supported by their shoulders from the pins 15 within the keepers in the door frame will be retracted downwardly out of the keepers into the door while the other terminals adjacent the opposite longitudinal edge of the door will project into the keepers and overaud therebelow and the operator holding the last named knob may pull the door open swingingly upon the last named projected plungers. The door n'iust be closed completely and must engage the parting strips 2 before any of the knobs on any side of the" door may be turning properly to unseat one ed e of the door with res acct to the other 4 whichever it may be, if desired, however, the parting strips 2 may be removed and the door 5 permitted to swing either way through, the doorway in which case the usual spring operated latches may be provided for automati ally latching the door in mid position where it will be fully closed.
By unlocking the plungers and causing their terminals to project equal distances out of the upper and lower edges of the door the latter can readily be unseated removed from the door frame. However, if a person is trying a knob at one side of the door adjacent one longitudinal edge thereof and another person is trying a knob on the other side of the door and adjacent the longitudinal edge thereof it will be found impossible to unseat'the door. In this event the person applying the-greatest amount of pressure or turning force upon the knob he holds will prevail over the other person displaying the lesser amount of pressure and power on the knob so that the knob held by the stronger person will turn permitting this edge of the door to be pulled swingingly to open. position.
It will thus be seen by means ofmy invention either longitudinal edge of the door may be readily opened by a person but both edges cannot at the same time be caused to unseat the door completely from its bearings. If a person approaches the door from one side and sees a shadow through the glass ofthe door of a person about to engage the knob on the other side, the first person would naturally step aside and take hold of the knob opposite to the one engaged by the person he confronts or he will wait and let the other person open the door.- This avoids one person crashing into another as is now very often done.
Numerous modifications may be resorted to in practice without departing in principle from the details of construction herein disclosed,
lVhat I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device as described consisting of a door and a door frame, tubular keepers disposed in the lower threshold of the door frame, contractible springs disposed in said keepers, keepers disposed in the upper threshold of the door-frame, vertically movable plungers arranged in said door adjacent either longitudinal edge and adapted to take in and out of said keepers, and means for swingingly supporting the ends of said plungers in saidkeepers.
2. In combination a door frame, keepers carried by the upper end thereof, pins spanning said keepers, a door in said door-frame carrying vertically slida ble bolts therein, the upper terminals of said bolts having reduced stems formed with a segmental head having its lower portion grooved out so as to provide under shoulders, means holding the shoulders of said bolts out of contact with said pins, and means whereby said bolt shoulders may movably engage and be supported by said pins as said door swings.
3. In a device as described, in combination, a door frame having a pair of keepers at its upper threshold,a door carrying vertically slidable plungers adapted to be actuated to enter said keepers alternately, a pin spanning each keeper centrally, the upper terminals of said plungers being reduced and sector-shaped so as to have front flat walls, said front flat walls of said plungers confronting said pin in parallel relation when said door is closed in said door frame, said reduced terminals having annular grooves providing shoulders adapted, when the door and plungers turn together to ride over upon said pins to prevent the retraction of said plungers out of said keepers.
