To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine in the'county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention refers to lifting jacks of the screw type, and it has for its object to provide a simple economical and effective jack wherein the actuating mechanism can be selectively shifted, whereby the power can be applied either directly for raising and lowering the jack screw, or-indirectly to thus develop a compound lever action, whereby the power is increased, resulting in thediminution of speed when the jack is used for heavy duty. v
With the above object in View, the invention consists of certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as are hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a jack embodying the features of my invention with parts broken away and other parts in section to more clearly illustrate the details of construction, the section being indicated by line 1-1 of Figure 2.

Referring by characters to the drawings, 1 represents a base having a hollow sleeve 2 formed therein, the upper portion of which is shouldered and recessed for an anti-friction bearing 3.
Nested within the recess and resting upon the anti-friction bearing, is the hub 4 of a ratchet or tooth wheel 4', the teeth in this instance being rectangular in formation, whereby the wheel can be conveniently rotated in either direction.
The hub 4 of the wheel is internally threaded for engagementwith a jack screw 5, which jack screw is adapted to have telescopic connection with the bore of the sleeve 2. The upper end of the jack screw is pro- Serial No. 476,186.
vided with any type of suitable head 5 for engagement with the body to be lifted.
The hub at is also extended above the tooth wheel portion thereof for the reception of the apertured end of an arm 6, which arm is mounted to loosely rotate upon the hub terminal, there being a guard housing fitted over the arm and wheel to protect ,these parts and to also hold them against longitudinal movement, the guard being secured to the base 1.
As best shown in Figures 1 and E2 of the drawings, the arm is provided with a depending trunnion 7, upon which is mounted a double nosed dog 8, the nose extensions of which are arranged to be selectively thrown into engagement with the teeth of the wheel for applying power. After the dog is shifted for this selective engagement, it is yieldingly' locked in its working position by a spring controlled plunger 8, which plungeris carried by the arm and is adapted to rideover a central tooth 8 that projects from the rear wall of the dog as best shown in Figure 2.
The arm 6 is also provided with an upwardly extended pin 9 for engagement with the slotted end 10 of an actuating lever 10. The actuating lever in this instance has secured thereto a fulcrum stud 11 which projects above and below the faces of said lever, and
As shown in Figure 1, the lever is directly coupled to the actuating arm 6 in which position the lower extension of its fulcrum stud 11 is nested within a slot 12, which is formed at the outer end of the aforesaid arm. The lever is held in its position by a cotter pin 13, which extends transversely of the slot and through apertures formed in the divided end portions of the arm.
Hence it will be seen that when the lever is directly coupled with the actuating arm, the wheel hub is rotated directly through its tooth and dog connection to the arm and it will also be noted that said wheel hub can be rotated in either direction, depending upon which nose of the dog is manually shifted for engagement with the teeth. This direct action of the lever that is imparted to the jack screw will rapidly raise the jack screw or lower it.
When it is desired to utilize the jack screw for heavy duty, the lever 10 is removed from its direct coupling connection to the arm 6 by first withdrawing the cotter Y slipped a into position.

In effecting the engagement between the slotted end of the lever 10 and the stud 11,
