SUPPORTING BRACKET FOR sro'rmen'rs AND T E LIKE.
Application filed March-26, 1921. Serial No. 455,749.
ToaZZ whom it mag/concern p Be itknown that I, STATES LEE LiinnY, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Brackets for Spotlights and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improve ments in brackets for supporting articles from a fixed member, and is designed more especially with a view to attaching what are commonly known at spot lights to the Windshields of automobiles, though not me essarily limited to this particular use.
lVindshields of motor vehicles are sometimes arranged in a vertical plane and sometimes inclined. and one of the objects of the present invention isto provide a bracket by which the lamp or projector may be applied to either a vertical or inclined windshield at will.
Another object is to provide a. bracket by which the spot light may be so attached to the windshield that while the light will have the range of movement necessary for road illumination, it will be impossible to elevate the beam sufficiently to dazzle approaching drivers. V
The invention further aims to provide an extremely simple, efiicient, economical and durable construction, and with these and other objects in view, the invention includes the novel features of construction and arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claims.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a view of the device in eleration;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is an end view; and
Fig. 4 is a detail.
Referring by reference characters to these drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the bracket or bracket arm, one end or portion of which is designed to be secured to the windshield frame or standard and the other end to carry the spot light. I have shown this bracket arm as constructed to adjustably and detachably support a spot light after the manner disclosed in an ap plication filed by me in the United States Patent Oiiice on the 7th day of l ebruary, 1921, Serial Number eta-3,196, the arm 1 having a concavo-convex portion 1, the concavity of which fits the curved back wall of the lamp against which it is frictionally held by a clamping plate, the lamp having a spindle which projects through the central opening a of the said concavo-convex portion, and the slot a being provided to enable the lamp to be removed from its support. The bracket arm is provided with a portion l at one end which is designed to form the one part of a clamp, and I prefer to form the entire arm including the lamp engaging portion and the clamp member or portion in one piece from sheet metal which may be conveniently stamped or died out into the proper shape. The said end portion 1 is preferably formed by bending the metal at right angles to form or provide two portions Z) and 6 connected at the end by a transverse web 6 for strengthening purposes and also to assist in forming the seat for the abutment member hereinafter described. The other portion of the clamp or clamping member comprises a bracket iron 2 having a foot 2 which is secured in any suitable manner to the member, conveniently by means of a screw or rivet, and it has an angularly turned outer end 2* designed to overlie the opposite side of the windshield frame or standard when the bracket has been placed with the clamping portion of the bracket against one side of such frame member or standard.
The side edges of the bracket arm are preferably turned over at substantially aright angle as indicated at 1 to impart additional strength and rigidly to the intermediate portion of the arm, and these overturned portions are cut away as indicated at a which provides two seats to receive an abutment member 3. This is in the form of a bar or member having a substantially arcshaped rear face adapted to be movably held in the seat formed by the recesses or cut away portions 1n and the intermediate angular pocket formed by the angular bent portions of the bracket. On its opposite side or face the bar or member 3 is designed to abut against the windshield standard, and I prefer to have it abut at two points, as this, in connection with the clamping device carried by the bracket iron 2, ives me a three point bearing. This is preferably accomplished by making the member 3 in the shape of a substantially arc shapedbar; and
notching the endsas indicated at 3.
The angularly turned end of thebracket iron 2 carries a clamping device which may be in the shape ofascrew 4= threaded through the bracket iron and arranged, to bear against the Windshield frame at a point intermediate the notched ,ends 3% of the alont ment member, thus giving the three point bearing above referred to.
Given a construction such as above described it Willbereadily seen that it may clamped :by, the setscrew.
Itv will, also bereadily understood, that; by thisnreangin applying the lamp to the, ,flllt'lShlQlClllt, may, be so adjusted thatthe lamp may not be raised, during its normal adjpstme ntsl beyond the limits allowed by law. a
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is: f
'1. The combination with a supporting bar of a bracket haying a-seanan arcuate abut ment member having its" convex face slidably. snpporteghbysaid seat and its ends abut-- ting one face of said bar, and an-opposed clamping member carried by saidfbracket and engaging-the opposite face. of said bar aterinecllatemem en 2,1 In combination, ,a.bracket arm of sheet metal. havingla lamp. supporting portion and anangular port1on;prov1ded=wlth seats in the edges. thereof, an are shaped bar slidably supported-by saidseats, a bracket iron seeulefil tosaid arm and-havlng apart overlying said are-shaped abfll, and a clampingggiserew threaded, through said. overlying Parta In, testilnony vhereof; lzalfix mysignature.
STATES LEE DERBY.
