In the present instance movement from .the printing keys is transmitted to the dog rocker through contact faces 11 on the type 'bars which faces co-operate with the front face of a curved universal bar 45 partly housed in a seat 46 in the rear of the segment 14, and comprised in a frame which Further includes an arm 52 extending rearward from the lower middle portion of the universal bar and carrying a contact device 53 which is adapted to engage with the point ofa contact screw 54. lhe universal bar frame is movably mounted on a bracket member 61 on which the' type bar segment 14 is also supported, said universal bar frame being adapted for movement foreand-aft of the machine under actuation of the type bars; and also being adapted to beshifted when the type bar segment is shifted .to change case, so that the front edge of the universal bar proper is always in posiion normally toreceive actuations from the type bars. The universal bar frame is provided with a restoring spring 62 which normally maintains thev universal bar in contact with the front wall of the depression46. hen one of the printing keys 27 depressed it acts through the train of type bar actuating devices to swing the associate type bar to operative position, causing the contact face 11" of said type bar acting against the curved universal bar l-5 to move the universal bar frame rearward against the pull of its spring, the movement being transmitted through the contact screw 54-, to the dog rocker 34, $35, which will be swung rearward, causing the stepping dog 40 to disengage from the tooth of the escapement wheel and swing on its individual pivot behind said tooth, and causing the holding dog 39 to engage with said wheel tooth so that when the actuated key 27 is released and the parts returned to normal position, the carriage will be permitted to step one letter space toward the left under the pull of its spring drum. The escapement is adapted to be actuated from the space key or bar (33 of the machine without afiectin the main dog I'OCliGl part i l-l. Said space bar is carried by a pair of lever arms (54 which extend forward from a rock shalt 65 having stationary bearings. rearward from said rock shaft a curved arm 66 terminating in a head 67 which normally underlies the forward arm of a lever (58 mounted on a stationary pivot (35), the forward arm of said lever terminating in a stop face (58 and the rearwardly extending arm being adapted to contact with a shoulder on an arm 71 pivotally connected to the secondary carrier part 35. The construction -is such that when the space key is depressed the curved arm (36 will be swung upward causing the head (37 to actuate the lever 68, the rear arm of" said lever co-operating with the arm '71 to swing down the secondary carrier part 35 on its pivot The down swing of said part 35 causes the stepping dog 40 to disengage from the escapement wheel and brings the tooth 43 of the third dog down into en gagement therewith, the teeth ol the eta-ape inent wheel being oil-set rearward sulliriently to provide engaging surl'accs lo! the dog tooth 43. The construction is such that the escapenient operation movement is effected during the depression of the space bar, the carriage movement taking place prior to the beginning of the return of the parts to normal position following the release of said space bar.
The paper feeding devices of the machine comprise feed rollers (not shown) for guiding the paper at the under side of the platen and other devices for controlling and guid ing the paper at the front side 01 the platen at and near the printing line. The latter devices comprise a pair of paper guiding members or fingers which are mounted on the carriage and adjustable lengthwise oi the platen, the left-hand one ol. said lingers or paper guiding devices being illustrated Projecting Til l Ill herein and designated as a shant the numeral 72. Said finger is a unitary contrivance and may be niade of sheet flit-31121]. con'iprising an upright portion 73 and an inte 'rl horizontally disposed portion 74: at right angles thereto! The iingerportion proper 73 extends crosswise, of the printing lin'eand is provided at its upper end with a pressure roll 75. The horizontal portion 74. is provided at its lower side/in line with the filigerportion 73 wiur a downwardly and rearwardly inclined extension or contact device 76. Said horizontal portion is also provided near its ends with pairs of clips or engaging devices 77 which are struck from the sheet metal 0-1? the part 7 a itself and fit over a, rectangular supeorting bar 78. The bar 78 extends lengthwise of the platen at its front side and below-the printing line and the guilding devices or aper linger contrivances 72 are slidably mounted on said bar. The tront face of the bar is preferably marked with a scale and the edge 74 of the paper linger cooperates as a pointer with said scale to indicate the position of the paper finger eontriv'ance' Near its ends the bar 78 is provided with rearwarclly extending lugs 79 that are perforated to bear on outward extensions or pins 80 projectingfroin the forward ends of ai ins'sl that are secured by headed screws 82 to the web portion 4 ot' the carriage. The arins 81 are angled or bent so that they extend forward underthe platen and have secured to their upper faces by headed screws 823 spring tongues 84- that hear at their freeends against the lugs 79, thustending t0. turn the bar 78 on its pivots and maintainingthe pressure roll '75 in spring pressed engagement with the platen or the paper thereon aloovethe printing line. Close to itsends the bar 78 is provided with rearwardly extending arms 85 which are adapted to engage with crank arms 86 fixed to a rock shaft 87 mounted on the carriage, and which maybe turned to oi "ercome the spring members 841- and throw the paper lingers forward away from the platen surface torender thenr inoperative. It will be understood that the paper finger contrivances 72 are so spaced apart along the supporting bar 78 as to eo-operate with worksheets at their side edge portions.
It sometimes happens that the operator continues actuatingthe printing keys after theinovement of the carriage has brought one of the paper-fingers opposite the printing point the result being that in some prior constructions actuated types instead of striking against the platen have struck against the paper finger, freqneiitly battelling or otherwise injuring the type, as wellas defacing the finger. Myinvention n'eventssuch improper operation by causing the line lock mechanism to he operated by thepaper fingers themselves In the present instance this result accomplished by providing an operating train that is actuated by the extension 76 and is effective on certain of the elements of the line lock mechanism disclosed in the aforesaid pending application of John H. Barr and Edwin 1! Barney, er. No. 506,107. Said train comprises a swinging member or arm 88 comprising an upright body portion 89,
an elbow or otY-set 90, and a curved portion 91 terminating in a head 92 provided at its sides with oppositely inclined end portions or cams 93. The nieniber 88 ispivoted on a shoulder screw 94 whichpasses through a bearing opening in the upper end of the upright portion 89 and is threaded into the upper end or a ill-shaped bracket comprising a forward upright arin 96, a horizontal cross portion 97 and a short rear upright portion 98, the horizontal portion 97 connecting the upright portions 98 and 96. The portion 98 ot the bracket receives headed screws which are threaded into the forward side of an inverted channel. bar 100whieh extends from side to side of the machine below the platen and is detaehably secured to the side frames 1. The pivotal support 94- of the arm 88 is forward of and below the parts mounted on and movable with the carriage and the bracket 95 is proportioned and arranged so that saidnnovable parts will clear it andwill not be obstructed by it. The pivot 94 is at the lett of the printing point andthe arin 88 extends rightward therefrom so that the head 92 is in the vertical fore-and-ait plane of the printing point. Below its pivot the member or lever 88 is provided with a downward extension or lug 89 which engagesloosely in an open-mouthed slot indicated at 101 in a lever member orbell crank designated as a wholeby the numeral 102. Said lever member comprises a short :forwardly extending arm 103 which overlies the horizontal portion or lnfaeltet 95, said short arm lniving the slot 101 termed in its free end; Said arnr 103 is provided with an upwardly extending shouldered or olfset portion 10 1- whieh brings it above the plane of the top so that the long arin .105 of the bell crank 102 may extend rightward lengthwise of and above said channel loar contiguous to its upper face. The bell crank 102 is provided with a downwardly extending pivot pin 106 which fits in a tubular bearing 107 rigid with the channel bar and extending downward therefrom, the channel bar being perforated in register with theftubular bearing 107. 'The right-hand or free end 0ft the long arm carries a downwatdly extending vertical pin onen- ;raging device 108 which passes freely through a slot indicated at 109 in the top 0'17 the channel bar 100,
the opening in of the channel bar, the slot being elongated so as to afford a limited extent of back and forthmovement of the pin 108 when the bell crank 102 is rotated on its pivot 106. It Will he understood that the head 92 is in the path of the contact devices 76 on the paper fingers so that each of said paper fingers is adapted during the to-and-fro movements of the carriage to engage with the cams 93 at the sides of said head and to depress the head, swinging the arm 88 on its pivot, this swinging movement being transmitted through the connection 89, 101 to the bell crank 102, the arm 104 thereof carrying the pin 108 forward from the rear to the front end of the slot 109.
The pin or engaging device 108 transmits movement to the line locking mechanism which, as stated, is preferably of the construction disclosed in the aforesaid application sr. No. 506,107. The elements of said mechanism, which are necessary to an understanding of the present invention areillustrated herein and will be briefly described, reference being had to said prior application for a fuller disclosure. Said elements include stop preventive means in the form of a COIltIOlliIig member comprising an upright arm 156, a horizontal cross portion 157 having ears 158 and. a curved finger or engaging portion 159. Bent off from the side of the upright arm 156 is a horizontal extension or U-shaped portion 156 whose free end is forward of and contiguous to the pin 108 which is adapted'to co-operate with it. The ears 158 are perforated to bear on a rod 161 supported on a U-shaped bracket comprising a horizontal cross bar 162 having parallel forwardly extending arms 163 terminating in angularly disposed ears 161 which receive securing screws 165 that are threaded into the bracket member 61, the rod 161 bearing in the bracket arms 163. The cross bar 162 has an upward extension or finger 166 which acts as a stop for the member 155 and against which said member is normally maintained by a coiled spring 167 which is anchored to a pin 168 on the right-hand arm 163, the rear end of said spring being hooked through a hole in a lug projecting laterally from the finger 159, the finger 159 being normally maintained by said spring in a position to sustain in inoperative position a stop 169 for the universal bar. The stop 169 is preferably in the form of a U-shaped frame of sheet metal comprisinga cross portion 170 having parallel side arms 171 which loosely embrace the arms 163 and are perforated to bear on the rod or shaft 161. Off-set forward and leftward from the cross portion 170 is an extension 172 which provides an abutment or stop proper, the forward edge of said extension being adapted to co-operate wlth a lug 173 projecting upward from the arm ol' the universal bar frame. The extension 172 is normally held up out of the path of the lug 173, but when released by the controlling member 155 drops down through the force of gravity close behind the lug 173 so as substantially to prevent movement thereof, the abutment 172 and lug 17 3 constituting cooperative stops to lock the universal bar against movement and the printing keys from co-operation with the platen, thus locking the line. The normal position of the parts is shown in both Figs. 1 and 2, but it will be understood that when the head 92 is depressed by one of the paper lingers, the arm 88 will be swung on its pivot and this movement will be transmitted through the bell crank 102, pin 108, and U-shaped extension 156 to the frame 155, rocking said frame on its pivotal axis 161, thereby lowcring the finger 159 and permitting the abutment 172 to drop down into the path of and contiguous to the rear face of the lug 1721. thereby eflectively blocking the universal bar against operative movement.
The controlling member or frame 155 is also effective through the last described movement to release a gravity operated stop device for the space bar mechanism, said device in the present instance being in the form of a frame or member 174 comprising a cross portion 175 having pintles 176, and also provided with a downward extension 177-near one end and near the other with an angular extension 179 terminating in a curved head 180 which lies behind the arm 156 of the stop controller or preventcr The stop member 17 1 is hung from a bracket suitably secured to the bed plate 8 and comprising a cross portion 181 having extensions 182 provided with cars 1323 perforated to receive the pintles 176, the member 171- being thus suspended and normally held back as shown in the drawings by the arm 156 acting against the head 180. VVlu-n, however, the controller 155 is actuated as described and the arm 156 swings forward the member 174: will be released and will swing forward until the finger 177 is brought to a. vertical position, at which time it will lie in the path of the stop 68 on the lever 68. The locking of the space bar may thus give warning that a paper finger is opposite the printing point. Moreover, it frequently happens that where a printing key line lock is employed without a space bar line lock,
the operator, should the line lock operate to prevent the printing of the final letter of a word, will nevertheless operate the space bar, causing the carriage to space, and will then release the line lock in order to print the final letter of a word. This printing of course will take place a letter space to the right of the proper position should the oporator neglect to back space the carriage before printing the final letter. The employment of the space bar line lock remedies this defect by preventing the improper operation above described.
