which constitutes the bearing 13, the said slot being of sufficient length to allow the insertion of the blade 29 therethrough.
To operate the .rocking member 20 with the blade holder 23 therein together with the sharpening drums 3, a manually operable actuating unit 38 is provided located within the recess consisting of an internal gear 39 which may be fastened in any suitable manner to a disk 40y and rotated in unison therewith through the medium 'of a handle 41. The actuating unit 38 is retained in the'recess 6 by means of an inwardly turned annularflange 42 provided upon the cylindrical member 2. A spring 43 is securely 'fastened to the disk40 and is bent inwardly to engage and apply suliicient pressure to the inner surface of the flange 22 toi cause the rocking member 20 to move in unison therewith-thereby forming a slipping friction driving connection between the rotary actuating unit 38 and the rocking member 20. A washer 44 surrounds the sleeve 21 between the wall 4 and the spring 43 to prevent undue friction between the actuating unit and the wall 4. The internal vgear 39 meshes with a pair of spur gears 46 which are fastened to the sleeves 12, thereby forming a positive driving connection between the rotary actuating unit 38 and the sharpeningdrums 8.
If it is so desired a projection 47 may be provided upon the member 31 which when said member is located in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, springs into a recess 43 formed in the adjacent member 24 and when the blade holder is removed kfrom the rocking member and it is desired to remove the blade holder ltherefrom without entirely withdrawing the member 31 from the collar 32, the said member 31 may be moved to a position where the projection 47 will spring into a recess 49 formed in the collar 32, thereby preventing the said member 31 from becoming disengaged from the collar.
Another cylindrical casing 5() may be pro` vided to surround and closely fit the cylindricalmember 2 of the casing 1, if it is desired, thereby increasing the strength of the casing 1 and adding to the general appearance of the same.
The vgeneral operationr of the sharpening device `hereinbefore described is as follows: The blade holder 28 is first removed from the rocking member 20 and the member 31 then moved longitudinally within the collar 32 until the projection 47 upon said member springs into the recess 49 of said collar. A razorblade 29 is then placed in position upon the blade holder with the projections 34 projecting through the openings 35 in the razor blade and the member 31 is again pushed to its rearward position. The blade holder with the blade therein is then again placed in position in the rocking member 20.
The handle 41 is then rotated alternately in opposite directions preferably several rotations in each direction.
Assuming that at the start the blade 29 occupies the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 5, and the handle 41 is rotated clockwise in Figs. 2 and 5, it will be evident that the drums 8 and 9 will be positively operated by reason of the gearing connected with the rotary actuating unit 38, while at the same time the spring 45, positively driven by the actuating unit 3S, engages the flange 22 of the rocking member 2O and a slipping driving connection takes place between said spring and said rocking member. The lfrictional driving connection between the spring 45 Iand rocking member 20 forms a means for furnishing a desired pressure of the blade against the sharpening drums.
If, now, after several turns of the handle in a clockwise direction, the direction of the handle be reversed, it will be evident that the position of the blade 29 will be reversed since the blade will move freely across the intervening space between the drums nntil the blade occupies the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 5, whereupon the blade encountering the drums ceases to rotate, is held with the proper pressure against the drums and the drums are then rotated in an opposite direction, or, in other words, in a countercloclrwise direction. The operator continues to rotate the handle alternately in opposite directions until the blade has been suiiiciently sharpened, the strip 1G performing the grinding operation, while the strip 17 acts'to finish or smooth the edge of the blade and perform a stropping operation. After the blade has been sulliciently sharpened, it may be removed from .its holder as previously described.

A. sharpening device for razor blades having, in combination, a casing comprisinga cylindrical wall, end walls dividing said casing into a central compartment with a recess at opposite ends of said casing,` a pair of rotary sharpenino` drums mounted in said end walls, a rocking member mounted upon said end walls between said drums and adapted to have a razor blade mounted therein, said rocking member embodying therein a sleeve located at one end thereof, a rotary actuating unit embodying therein an internal gear and a disc located in one of said recesses, said actuating unit also embodying therein a spring fast to said dise. and adapted to force said sleeve against said disc thereby forming a slipping driving connection between said actuating unit and said rocking member and gears forming a positive driving connection between said internal gear and said sharpening drums.
