NOEL nannsr woon-smrrn, or-arcnmoun, nNeLANn.
'FYIEWRI'I?IEJRIv WORD-COUNTING DEVICE. I
Application filed December 27, 1921 Serial No. 525,148.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Noni. ERNEST Woon- SMrrH, of Richmond, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new.
and useful Improvements in and Relating to Typewriter Word-Countin Devices, of which the following is a speci cation.
The object of the present invention is to provide typewriters and the like with a simple device for counting and indicating the number of words written on said machines, this device being of such a character as to be easily fitted to any make of typewriter without extensive alterations thereto.
In carrying out this invention and for the purpose of counting and indicating the number of words written by the machine, I provide a counter of any suitable constructi'on, which may be attached either to the frame or to the spacing bar of the machine and so arranged that each time the said bar is depressed at the end of a word, the said counter is operated by suitable actuating means, in contact with said spacing bar. This actuating means is adapted to be thrown out of contact when the spacing bar is operated for the purposes of paragraph spacing or the like.
An embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device for counting the number of words, and Fig.
2 is a plan View of said device.
In the drawings a designates the base of the typewriter machine on which is mounted a counter 12 of the Veeder or other approved type; this counter being shown as attached to said base by a clip 0 secured by screws 0 0 and operated by means of a rocking lever d, as is customary. To said arm d is articulated or pivoted-one end of a bar 6, the other end of which is rigidly attached 'to an auxiliary spacing bar f resiliently mounted on the standard spacing bar g of the machine, being positioned thereon :by means of terminal bent over members It forming clips and a cross pin or pivot It at one end. The standard spacing bar 9 is further provided with a tab or finger piece 9 secured thereto by a clip g and screw 9 With such a device the standard spacing bar is depressed by means of the tab 9 for ta ulating or spacing operations, other than spacing between words, the counter being unaffected by such depress'ion; but when it is desired to count or accumulate on the counter b the number of words written the special or auxiliar spacing bar is depressed at the end of eac word written, thus operating the counter through the arm e and lever d and adding 1 to the counter at each such depression.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 2- 1. In a typewriter, the combination, with actuating member, so that both bars will be depressed and the counter actuated when downward pressure is imposed upon the auxiliary bar; and a member attached to the first barand projecting outwardly therefrom beyond the auxiliary bar, to depresssaid first .bar independently of the auxiliary bar and without entailing its operation.
2. In a typewriter, the combination, with the spacing bar, of a counter; an actuating member therefor; an auxiliary spacing bar overlying the first spacing bar and pivotally connected thereto at one end, the other end of the auxiliary bar having a positive mechanical connection with the counteractuating member, said auxiliary bar having substantially the same length and width as the first bar, so that both bars will be depressed and the counter actuated when downward pressure is imposed upon the auxiliary bar at any point; and a member attached to the first bar-and projecting outwardly therefrom beyond the auxiliary bar,
to depress said first bar independently o the auxiliary bar and without entailing its operation. I
3. In a typewriter, the combination, with the spacin bar, of a counter having an actuating lever connected to it an auxiliary spacing bar overl'ying'the first spacing bar and pivoted to the same at one end; an arm rigidly secured to the other end of the auxiliary bar and pivotally connected to said actuating lever, whereby both bars will be depressed and the counter actuated when downward pressure is imposed upon the auxiliary bar; and a member attached to the first bar and projecting outwardly with the s acing bar to permit a relative movement between them which will enable the spacin1 bar to be depressed without operating t e counter-actuating lever.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
NOEL ERNEST VVOOD-SMITH.
