LOUIS E. SADLER, OF AT'I'LEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOIB TO THE F. H. SADLEB COMPANY, OF ALJTLEBORO, IVIASSACHUSETTS.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR PINS.
Application filed May 5, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L Louis E. SADLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safety devices for pins and the like, and the primary object thereof is to provide a device of this kind which is of simple and economical construction and which is efficient in operation so as to completely house and protect the pointed end of the pin and to prevent accidental movement thereof out of the keeper.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be formed in part integral with the pin structure, or which may be made separate therefrom and then suitably secured to the pin structure.
The invention still further aims to provide a device of this character which involves a minimum of parts and material, and in which, in the instance of being formed integral in part with the pin structure, eliminates the use of solder and all other separate fastening means.
The invention also aims to provide a device of this type which can be easily operated and which still is effective as a safety device, and has still further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation;
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section on line .i of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the base of the device in the instance of the formation of the device entirely separate fromv the pin.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention the pin body 1 is shown as being of approximately lJ-cross section, having the pin 2 pivoted thereto at one end as Serial No. 558,559.
usual. The sides of the body 1 are formed with an integral part 3, which latter is formed into a tubular formation 4 connected by contracted neck portions 5 to the sides of the body 1, the tubular portion l SQIYiDfJ, to house or receive therein the pointed end of the pin 2. The tubular portion is slotted as indicated at 6, the slot extending lengthwise thereof and terminating short of the rear end of the same so as to provide a stop or abutment 7. A sliding member 8 is mounted on the tubular portion f and has its side edges inturned as indicated at 9 so as to prevent rotation of the member 8 about the portion a, the inturncd sides 9 engaging in the concavities formed by the neck por tions 5. The forward end of the slidable protector 8 is formed with a strulr-out lug 10 which engages through the slot 6 of member 4t and with the stop 7 so as to limit sliding movement of the protector 8 to open position. The rear end of the member 8 may be closed as shown at 11 so as to engage the opposite or rear end of the part 4 to thereby restrict movement of the protector 8 to operative position and to present a neat appearance. The sides of the member 8 may be knurled or roughened as indicated at 12 so as to enable the fingers of the user to grasp same firmly. In addition, the forward ends of the base member 4 are slightly spread, so that the latter has a somewhat wedge shape, and the protector 8 is given a corresponding shape. so that the end wall 11 may be dispensed with. and movement of the protector to operative position limited by the wedge shape of the parts as just described.
By referring to Figure 5 it will be seen that the base member therein shown is formed separately from the pin body 1 and may be secured thereto in any desired manner, such as by soldering, the base member including a tubular portion 4 and contracted neck portions 5' and a slot 6, the structure being identical in all essentials to that above described.
From the foregoing it will be seen that in. order to secure the pin and to release same, it is merely necessary to slide the protector 8 according as to whether the pin is to be removed or housed, and that the wedge shape of the parts affords a frictional latching means which prevents accidental movement and thereby opening of the protector to release the pin.
Having thus described my invention, what It claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. it. pin protector including a base part having a tubular portion and a contracted neck, the base part being carried by the body or" the pin and being of wedge shape and having a longitudinal slot extending through one end of the tubular portion thereof and terminating short of the other end, a protector of tubular form and wedge shape slidable on the base part and having its sides engaging in the neck of the base part and a lug struck out from the forward end of the protector and engageable in the slot of the base part and with the inner end wall formed by the slot.
2. pin protector including a base member having a tubular pin-receiving; part formed with a slot which latter affords a stop at one end, and a protector member of tubular form slidable over the base memher and having a lug which projects inwardly therefrom into the slot and having a closed rear end which engages the rear end of the base member.
3. In a pin protector, a wedge-shaped base member having a tubular part slotted to receive the pin therein, and a member slidable on the base member and having wedge-- ike engagement therewith to cover the slot .nd hold the pin in the base member.
4. In a pin protector, a hollow base member of wedge shape slotted to receive the pin end, and a Wedge shaped member slidable on the base member to cover the slot.
5. In a pin protector, a hollow base momher having a slot and contracted parts, and
a protector member slidable over the base member to cover and uncover the slot and having its sides engaged in the contracted parts of the base member.
6. A. pin protector including a hollow base member slotted to admit the pin to the interior thereof a slidable tube-like member disposed over the exterior of the base member to cover the slot, and having a closed rear end to engage the rear end of the base member to limit sliding of the slidable mem her in one direction, means to slidably mount tae second member on the base memher and to hold same against rotary movements, and means to limit sliding of the slidable member in the opposite direction.
7. A pin protector including a hollow slotted base member having a neck portion secured to the body of the pin, a split mem ber mounted over the base member and receiving the neck portion in the split thereof. and means to limit sliding of the split member.
8. In a pin protecton a hollow base member having a contracted neck and having a slot to receive the pin, and a protector member slidably mounted over the base member and having a part extending through the slot and into the interior of the base member to dispose the pin end in the contracted necr: of the base member.
In testimony whereot l: have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS E. SADLER.
