Be it known that I, Monnrs RosnNWAssEn, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leggings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in leggings of the puttee type, and one of the objects thereof is to provide a legging which will be more durable and will have better wearing qualities than have leggings of this character as hitherto constructed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a legging provided with a detachable shoe strap or stirrup of such construction that when this part has become worn or damaged through use, a fresh strap or stirrup can be readily attached to the legging.

A further object of the invention is to provide in a legging of the above character a detachable and adjustable strap or stirrup with means provided in the legging itself which affords a place of concealment for the free ends of said strap or stirrup.

Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated on the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings wherein l? have illustrated a preferred. form of embodiment of my invention:

Fig. 1 illustrates a perspective of the legging constructed in accordance with the resent invention.

Fig. 2 is a similar view with the lower part of the legging cut away so as to more clearly illustrate the construction.

Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing the manner in which the pockets which are adapted to receive the free ends of the strap or stirrup are formed.

Referring now to the drawings wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views the reference numeral 1 denotes the body of the legging which as shown is formed of two pieces of material stitched together, and of such confirmation. that the garment will closely embrace the leg of the wearer. The free edges 2 and 3 of the legging overlap as clearly shown in Fig; 1, said edges being herein designated as overlapping flaps. "The outer flap 2 is provided with a plural- 1t y of eyes 4, and the inner flap 3 is provided with a plurality of hooks 5, and lace 6 passing through the eyes 4 and about the hooks 5 serving to fasten the legging about the leg of the wearer.

v The lower end of the legging is provided with an enlarged instep portion 7 which fits about the instep and heel of the shoe of the wearer.

8 and 9 respectively denote small tabs'or strips of material which are disposed in opposite relation, each tab being stitched to inner surface of the legging along lines indicated at 10 and 11 in Fig. 3 of the drawings, It will be noted that the lines of stitching 10 and 11 are disposed adjacent the lateral edges of the strips, a slight slack being provided in the material of the strips so that a pocket 12 is formed between the inner wall of the legging and the inner wall of the strips or tabs, each of which at its lower end being provided with a buckle or similar attaching device 13. The ends of the strips or tabs 8 and 9 are doubled about one of the end cross bars of the buckles, said parts of the tab being then stitched together so that the buckles are firmly mounted in ,the lower ends of the said tabs or strips 8 and 9.

The strap or stirrup indicated at let comprises a relatively narrow strip of material slightly longer than that usually required for the stirrup of a legging, owing to its adjustable qualities as hereinafter pointed out. This strip lel has its opposite ends extended through the buckles 13 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and the free ends of strip 14 are inserted in the pockets 12 hereinbefore described, so that they are concealed within the legging. It will of course be seen that the stirrup 14; may be adjusted in the buckles 13 properly to fit the legging to the foot of the wearer, and that when said adjustment has been made the free ends may be readily inserted, within the pockets 12.

It will therefore be seen that the present construction prolongs the life of the legging since the stirrup is the part that is subjected to the severest usage, the present construction providing for a ready replacement of the stirrup when worn or injured.

construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;

1. A. legging of the class described comprising strips of material adapted to be \vrappedabout the leg of the wearer, a pair of fastening devices secured to, the lower end of the legging, and a detachable stirrup having its ends adjustably secured to said fastening devices.

2. A legging coin-prising strips of fabric adapted to be positioned upon the leg of the wearer, a pair of tabs securedeto, the-lower edge of the legging, pockets formed between said tabs and the inner wall of the legging, a buckle secured to each of said tabs, and a stirrup comprising a strip of material adapted to be secured to said buckles and have its ends inserted within said pockets.

3. A legging having a pair of oppositely disposed pockets. at its lower end, fastening device secured to, said legging adjacent each of said pockets, a detachable strap adjustably secured to said fastening device, and the free ends of said strap inserted within said pockets.

i. A legging having a pocket formed near its lower end, a buckle secured to said legging adjacent said pocket, :1 stirrup having one end secured to said buckle and its free end located outside of said buckle and insorted within said pocket.

5. A legging having a tab secured to its lower end upon the inner wall of thelegging, said tab being fastened to said legging by rows of stitches upon its opposite sides so that a pocket is formed intern'lediate the rows of stitching, a buckle secured to said tab, and a stirrup having one end fastened to the opposite side of the leg from that occupied by said tab, and having its opposite end secured to said buckle and its free end inserted within said pocket.
