INVENTOR My a /L;
ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 2%, i922.
SAMUEL J'. orsnrn', or rolviinns, new roan.
sKYLieir.
Application filed November 5, 1921. Serial No. 512,988.
' adapted for theater stage purposes but is not restricted to such use.
It is frequently desired, or required by municipal regulations, that the area of space that is open when the windows or sashes of a skylight are in their open position shall at least be equal to the opening in the roof over which the skylight is installed. I t is also desired that the windows or sashes be capable of being opened partially or entirely in a very prompt and certain manner, whenever occasion demands. Also, in case of fire, the opening of the sashes should take place promptly and automatically in case the temperature exceeds a certain amount, and should be easily and quickly eifected whenever an emergency arises in which it is desirable to open the skylight. These and other useful objects are accomplished by this invention without requiring the installation of complicated devices that are apt to get out of fix and become inoperative.
The invention will be understood from the description and drawings illustrating an embodiment thereof, in which the same ref erence characters refer to the same parts throughout. In the drawings Fig. l is an end View of the skylight with parts left 0H.
Fig. 2 is a view showing a sash with its hin -e connection.
ll ig. 3 is a side view corresponding to Fig. 2.
Fig. 4; is a side view of a modification of the hinge connection, and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the same.
Reference character 1 indicates the roof over the opening 2 in which the skylight 3 is installed. The skylight 3 comprises the ordinary covering 4 and sides 5, having cross beams 6 and 7. At the sides and ends are mounted windows or sashes 8 of the requisitenumber and size that the conditions render necessary or advisable.
The sashes S are so installed that they form substantially vertical walls for the skylight and are so mounted or pivoted or hinged that their tendency is to turn outwardly by their own weight to open the spaces which they cover in their normal closed position. For this purpose the windows or sashes 8 may be mounted and fastened in a longitudinal groove 9 along the, upper edge of a metal strip 10, which strip is bent to provide an outstanding portion 11 that is pivoted to uprights 12 resting on cross-beam 7. The extreme edge of the sheet 10 may be bent around a rod 13 that passes through holes in the uprights 12 so as to form a hinged or pivoted connection. Other convenient ways may be used for providing a pivoted connection for the sash 8, the im' portant consideration being that the center of gravity of the sash 8 should be so related to the pivot point about which it swings that the sash will open automatically when the means for holding it in its closed position is released.
Pins 15 are attached to the sashes 8 and are connected by strands or cords 16 which pass over pulleys 17 to a rope 18, which is provided with a fusible link 19. When the rope 18 is taut, the sashes 8 are turned to their closed vertical positions with their upper edges extending under the overhanging projections 4. When the rope 18 is loosened by severing it or uniastening its lower end, or by fusing the link 19, the sashes 8 turn about their pivot points, being impelled by their weight, thus opening the skylight.
Instead of having the sashes 8 fastened to metal strips as above indicated, they may be attached to bracket arms 20 (Figs. 1- and 5) whose ends 21 are bent and are pivoted to supports A rod 23 extends through holes in the portion 21 and support 22 and serves as a pivot for the bracket 20. Other changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the in vention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, What If by Letters claim as new and desire to secure Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, asash substantially vertical in its normal closed position, a housing, said sash being outside of said housing, a pivot for said sash inside of said housing, said sash being connected to said pivot byan offset portion.
in a device of the class described, a sash, a pivot therefor, a wall, said sash being on one side of said Wall and said pivot on the other side of said Wall. I
3. In a device of the class described, a sash, a pivot therefor, said sash being con- 5 nected to said pivot by means of a bent sheet oi stifi material.
4. In a device of the class described, a
substantially vertical sash, a Wall, an ofiset member connected to said sash whereby said sash is pivoted on the opposite side of said 10 Wall from said sash.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
SAMUEL J. OLSHIN.
