COMB.
Application filed March 18, 1922.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that l, EMMETT H, Ross, a citizen of the United States, residin at the city of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to devices for the treatment of the scalp and hair; and the im provement consists in providing a cylindrical comb having perforate or tubular teeth connecting to a cylindrical chamber in the upper portion of the comb, said chamber having a screw cap compression closure to force the contents of said chamber through the tubular openings in said teeth to thereby treat the scalp with unguents and medicinal and cleansing preparations without contacting the hair with said preparations except at or near the roots of the hair, and also to provide a device for massaging or shampooing the scalp and hair; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the comb; and Fig.2 is a diametral sectional view of the same, showing the pre ferred construction and arrangement of the different parts. Fig. 3 is aplan view of the under side of the toothed or comb member, showing the tubular or perforate teeth and their arrangement in circular formation; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of said comb portion with the screw cap member removed, showing the perforations to the teeth and the cylindrical chamber or receptacle for the unguents or other forms of medicinal or shampoo preparations. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the screw cap. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the comb member shown in the plan view in Fig. 4.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the comb member which is provided with the teeth 11, all or a portion of which teeth are perforate, that is, having the tubular openings 12 lengthwise therethrough. The perforations or tubular openings 12 extend up to the cylindrical compression chamber 13 in said comb member 10 so that the contents of the Serial No. 544,908.
The screw cap 14 is shaped to fit within the cylindrical chamber 13 and has the screw thread 15 on the periphery of its lower end which is receivable in the screw thread 16 on the inner wall of the chamber 13. The lower end 17 of the cap 14 preferably fits the bottom 18 of the chamber 13, said bottom 18 being preferably slightly crowning so that the contents of the chamber naturally gravitate toward or are forced to the tubular openings 12 and through the same.
The members 10 and 14 are preferably made of aluminum or aluminum alloy or some metal that is as light as possible, yet not subject to reactions from the compounds used therein, the screw cap 14 having its central portion shaped with the opening 19 therein to make said cap 14 as light as possible. Said cap 14 preferably has the projecting knurled or milled edge 20 for the easy turning of the same in forcing the unguents or medicinal compounds through the tubular passages 12.
It is apparent that the cylindrical shape of the comb permits the easy and gradual turning of said comb upon the scalp when pressed through the hair against said scalp. The screw cap is gradually turned sufficiently to keep a gradual flow of the unguent or medicinal preparation through the perforate teeth 11, the lower ends of the teeth 11 being rounded so as not to in any wise injure the scalp in said turning or shampooing process.
The screw cap 14 fits so closely within the comb member 10 in the cavity 13 that it acts as a screw plunger, providing a constant pneumatic pressure upon the unguent or other preparation within the compression chamber 13 so that the contents of said chamber 13 are caused to flow steadily through the tubular teeth 11 upon the scalp with any desired de ree of force according to the pneumatic pressure given upon said contents by turning the screw plunger cap 14.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A comb having tubular teeth thereon connecting to a chamber in said comb, and a screw cap fitting in the threaded wall of said chamber to press the contents of said chamber through said tubular teeth by turning said cap.
2. A comb 0f the class described comprising a cylindrical vmember having tubular teeth connecting to a cylindrical chamber in the upper portion thereof, said member hav ing a screw thread Within said cylindrical chamber, a screw cap threaded on its periphery to fit said thread Within said cylindrical chamber, and a. knurled or milled edge on said cap to assist in turning the same to force the contents of said cylindrical cham- 10 her through said teeth. 1
In testimony whereof I have affiXed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
