TRUNK BED.
Application filed August 30, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RED Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a trunk bed, and
the object of the invention is to provide an apparatus that is suitable for the use of campers and army officers, and, at the same time, providing a bed.
lVith this and other objects in view, my
invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus used as a bed.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the 5 trunk bed in a closed condition.
Figure 3 is a transverse, vertical, sectional view of the trunk bed, as shown in its closed position, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1
designates the casing of my apparatus, which is made of comparatively thin, yet strong and durable material, and the bed is reinforced by metal pieces 2, at its cor ners. for increasing the life and strength of the entire apparatus. The door 3 is hinged, at 4, along the upper edge of the front, and the door is adapted to close down flat upon the top 5, of the casing 1, for the purpose hereinafter specified. A plurality of drawers 6 are placed in the easing 1, with a compartment 7 formed in the casing in front of the front ends of the drawers 6.
A spring mattress 8 comprises the central section 9 and end sections 10. When the apparatus is in its closed or compacted condition, the mattress 8 is in compartment 7, thereby being placed out of the way, when not in use, and at the same time holding the drawers 6 closed, so that they will not spill Serial No. 496,879.
their contents; the mattress 8 in compartment 7, Fig. 3, acts as a locking means for preventing the drawers 6 from sliding out of position.
When the mattress is in position for a person to lie down on the same, it rests upon the door 3, and door 3 rests flat upon top 5; the door increases the strength of the top to about double, as the door when closed upon the top, as shown in Fig. 1, constitutes a part of the top for supporting the weight of the mattress and the object reposing thereon, whereas if the door 3 was not used, the top of my trunk bed would be marred, as well as being strained; by the mattress engaging the inner face of the door, as the door rests flat upon the top, Fig. 1, the marring will not take place on an outer surface of the trunk bed, and further, the portion of the trunk bed supporting the mattress will be greatly strengthened and doubly reinforced by reason of the top 5 and the door 3 being the parts of the casing that supports the mattress when it is in its extended position (Fig. 1).
A suitable lock 11 is provided for fastening the door 3 in its closed position.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changesor alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall. within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a trunk bed, the combination of a casing provided with drawers in its rear portion and with a compartment in its front portion, a mattress in the compartment against the drawers and holding the drawers in a closed position, and a door on the casing and closed against the mat tress for holding the mattress in the com-- partment.
2. In a trunk bed, the combination of a casing provided with an open front and with a plurality of drawers in its back and front of the drawers holding the drawers closed, and a door hinged to one of the edges of the front of the casing and closed against said mattress and holding the same in the compartment, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
FRED MOORE.
