To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY Arnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Libertyville, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to monkey wrenches, and an object of the invention is to provide means for preventing accidental movement of the movable jaw relative to the rigid jaw without impeding adjustment of the movable jaw.
In use, monkey wrenches are quite often used as hammers and it is well known that during such use the feed screw often rotates slightly varying the adjusted relation of the movable jaw with the rigid jaw necessitating readjustment when it is desired to again use the wrench on the same belt or nut or one of similar size.
It is an object of this invention to provide means for preventing movement of the movable aw, at times as specified above, which means comprises a yieldably mounted pin adapted for engagement with a ratchet surface on the thumb nut of the adjusting screw which pin will yield under forced rotation of the thumb nut to permit adjustment of the movable jaw, but the spring of which pin is of such tension as to prevent rotation of the feed screw and nut by hammering action of the wrench.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a monkey wrench showing parts in section, and illustrating the improved locking attachment.
Fig. 2 is a detailed cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the tensioning spring of the locking pin.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the movable jaw 1 of the monkey wrench 2, is movable along the shank 3, in the usual manner, adjustment being had by the rotation of the feed screw 4;. A thumb nut 5 is mounted upon the feed screw 4 to facilitate manual rotation thereof, in the usual manner, however, the end of the thumb nut 5 which faces the fellow 6 of the wrench handle 7 is provided with a plurality of serrations 8 radiating from the center of the nut and providing a ratchet face against which the beveled end 9 of the locking. pin 10 engages. The locking pin 10 projects through an opening 11 drilled in the outer end of the lateral feed screw carrying projection 12 on the fellow 6 and is mounted for free sliding movement in the opening 11. A tensioning spring 13 is removably mounted within the fellow 6 and is substantially V shaped providing an arm let which engages the end of the locking pin 10, an arm 15 which engages against the inner surface of the rear side of the projection 12, and also a relatively short extension 16 which extends into the barrel of the fellow engaging its inner surface, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings for assisting in holding the spring 13 in proper position. The spring 13 is tensioned to urge the locking pin 10 outwardly and cause its beveled end 9 to fit into one of the serrations 8 to prevent accidental rotation of the thumb nut 5 and consequently pre vent adjustment of the adjustable jaw 1 of the wrench 2. The spring 13 is of such tension, however, as to permit relatively free yielding thereof when pressure is applied to the thumb nut 5 for rotating the feed screw 1 to adjust jaw 1, the yieldable movement of the spring and also of the locking pin being facilitated by the beveled end of the pin and the beveled sides of the serrations 8.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and. therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A wrench comprising a stationary jaw. a movable jaw thereon, a hollow handle con nected to the stationary jaw and having a hollow projection, a screw having oneend mounted in the movable aw and the other end mounted in the projection, a nut on the screw having one end provided with serrations, a pin slidably supported by the projection and engaging the serrations, and a V shaped leaf spring having one arm arranged vertically and pressing against said pin and the other arm resting flat agaipst one wall of the projection, said spring being further provided with an extension extending into and lying in flat contact with the inner surface of the handle.
