Application filed March 29, 1922; Serial no. 547,942.
T 0 allwhom it maycoacera: I
Be it known. that I,"CEORGEVVHSTONE, a citizen of the .United States, residing at Moberly, in the county of Randolph-State of Missouri, have invented: a. new and use ful Bookmarker; and I do hereby declare the following to be. a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
The invention relates tobook marks, and
has for its object toprovide a book mark which is adapted tobe slidably mounted on the outer edge of a leaf, and to be intermittently moved for uncovering lines during the reading operation, thereby. allowthe reader to follow the lines without straining the eyes. The device is partic ularly adapted for use by persons having defects of the eyes.
A further object is to provide the-device with a slidable wedge at its outer end,-
which wedge forms means for gripping the edge of the page and holding the device in any place to which it may be adjusted, for instance during a pause in reading or to mark the place for future reading.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ofparts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings I Figure 1 is a top plan View of the marker showing the marker attached to the leaf of a book.
Figure 2 is a bottom perspective view of the marker.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the marker.
Figured is a perspective view of the slidable wedge. i
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the marker and 2 the straight edge thereof, whichstraight edge is adapted to be positioned beneath.
the lines of printing as shown in Figure 1 and to be intermittently moved during the reading operation. The end 3 of the body is provided with a depression 4, in which the finger may be placed when moving the margin downwardly on the page 5 of the Specification of Letters Patent.
book,.' -When the marker is used on the opposite page 6. of'gthe book, the edge '7 is-intermittently moved downwardly beneath l nesthatare toibe read.- It will be seen that durlng thereading operation the reader may easilyfollowlines on the pages of a book, and-1n such a mannerthat loss of they P08111011 during the reading w ll be obviated.
The outer end .8 of the body memberl has extending downwardly from its opposite edges, downwardly and inwardlyextending L-shaped flanges 9, which flanges form channels 10 of a wedge shaped with their narrow ends outwardly disposed, and in which channels 10' apage clamping wedge 11 is slidably mounted. When the wedge" 11 is forcedoutwardly, the flange 12 carried by the wedge 11 engages the under side of the page and jams and holds the same against the under face 13 of the body 1. I'Iowever when the device is being used as a guard the wedge 11 is in inner position thereby allowing the device'to slide on the page. When the reader desires to mark the place the wedge 11 is forced outwardly and the sheet Patented Aug. 29,1922.
securely clamped in engagement with the i 1 under face of the body 1. Toinsure a positive clamping action, the taper of the channels .10; is reduced to a minimum thereby allowing the .wedge to easily wedge in the channels 10, in such a manner that it will be frictionally held. The wedge is limited in its movement to inoperative position by means, of a lug 1e secured at- 15 to the under face'of the body 1, which lug extends downwardly through an enlarged aperture 16 in the'wedge 11. When thewedge 11 is moved inwardly to inoperative'position the wall 17 of the aperture 16 engages the lug 14: and stops the inward movement of the wedge thereby preventing loss or displace mentof the wedge. i
From the above it will be seen that a line guide and book mark is provided'which issimple in construction and so constructed that'it may be clampedand'held in any po sition desired, in registration or adjacent the line of printing.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1., The combination with aline marker adapted to be intermittently moved over a sheet of paper, of as'lidable wedge shaped clamping member slidabl ,mounted in wedge shaped channels int e outer end of y I the marker and disposed. on the under face of the marker and forming means for clainp ing a sheet against the under face of the marker.
2. A line guide and place marker comprising an elongated body member adapted to rest on a sheet, downwardly and inwardly extending flanges carried by the'opposite edges of the body member adjacent the outer edge of the body member and forming wedge shaped oppositely disposed channels having their narrow ends outwardly disposed, Wedge shaped member slidably mounted in said channel and provided with a centrally disposed enlarged v inward aperture, a lug carried by the body memher and extending into the enlarged aperture andforming' means for limiting the movement 01" the Wedge shaped member and'a flange carried by the inner face of said Wedge shaped memberand forming a clamping jaw cooperating With the underface of the body member.
In testimony Whereo'i I have signed my name to this specification in the presence 25 of two subscribin Witnesses.
