To all witom it may concern:
I citizen of the United Statesfi residing at Minneapolis, in the county of State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Door Opening and ClosingDevice, of which the following is a specificatmn.
My invention relates to improvements in door opening and closin devices.
Its object is to rovi e a simple, durable and inexpensive e ectrically actuated devlce of this kind, capable of being easily installed and constructed toavoid injury to the driving mechanism thereof and to the door structure operated thereby.
With the foregoing and other ob ects 1n view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction herelnafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a view illustrating, in section, a sliding door structure, and, in plan, the principal parts of an appl ed door opening and closing device, embodying my invention, said view being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of F1g. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view takenon the line 3-3 ofFig. 1; Fig. 4c is a plan view illustrating, in detail, one of the door buffers andassociated switch arms, said view being taken on-the line l-tof Fig. 3; Fig. is a side elevation, in detail, of the driving motor, clutch and a portion of the rod actuated by said motor; Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the same and Figs. 7 and,8 are diagrammatic views illustrating my invention as applied:

Referring to the drawings in which s milar reference letters and numerals have been used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, I have employed the letter A to indicate doors and the letter B to designate the door frames and associated wall structures. In Fig. 1, l have showna sliding door A, carried by hangers 1O traveling upon a rail '11, on the wall structure B. threaded actuating rod 12 is secured at one end to a bracket 13 fixed to the door A. A reversible motor C depending from a hanger 14 on the wall structure B (or ceiling, not shown) is equipped with a hollow or tubular driving shaft 15" designed to Specification of Letters Patent.

Said body 19 is formed with an annular depression 21 in its outer face and 1s provided with cars 22 and stops 23; The driven member 18 of the clutch D includes a circular plate 24: fitted within the annular depression 21 in the body 19. Radial fingers 25, pivoted medially on theears 22 of the body 19, bear at their inner ends upon the plate 24. lhe pressure of said fingers 25 against said plate is regulated by means of tension springs 26. These springs encircle threaded stems 27, which abut against the stops 2'3 on the body 19, said springs-being interposed between set nuts 28 on said stems and the outer endsof the fingers 25. -A
universal joint is supplied between the clutch member 18 and the nut 16. This joint includes a ring 29 pivoted, through the medium of opposed pins 30, to the nut'lfi, said ring, in turn, being pivoted, through opposed pins 31, to lugs 32 on the plate 24. Buffers E and F are arranged at opposite sides of the door A to yieldingly arrest the movements of said door at the extremities of its throws. Each bufi'er (Fig. a) includes a bracket 33, which is secured to the wall structure Each bracket is formed with a pair of guides 34:, a pin 35 being slidably mounted therein. Encircling each pin 35 is a coiled spring 36, the same being interposed between a collar 37 on its respective pin and one of the guides 34. Said springs 36 yieldingly hold the forward ends of the pins 35 in the path of the door A, but yield under increasing tension, when the pins 35 are shifted by pressure of the moving door A. Switches 38 and 38 accompany the bufiers F and F. Referring to Fig. f, it will be noted that the arm 38 of each switch is pivoted upon its respective bracket 33 one end thereof having a slidable pivotal connection with the rear end of the adjacent pin 35. In Fig. 1, it will be seen that the free ends of the arms 38 make and break contact with terminals 39. An electrical starting.

One form of motor contemplated, includes a hanger bolt 45, which may turn in-its sup-- porting hanger 14 and thus provide a swiveled mounting for the motor. I The screw thread connections between the propeller rods and motors, in the various forms illustrated, operate to lock the doors, when the motors are at rest; This feature prevents the swinging of the doors by wind or gravity and also saves the cost of the usually heavy and expensive door looks.
The principal advantages of my improved device reside in the simplicity of structure, ease of application, safety against injury to moving parts and, further, in the door looking feature.
Changes in the specific form of my invention as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without pivotal conde arting from the spirit of my invention.
