HENRY CHARLES snoa'r, or SOUTHALL, ENGLAND;
PORTABLE STAND non DISPLAYING GARMENtrs; 2
Specification of Letters Patent. Ailg, i5, 1922.
Application filed April 12, 1922. Serial 110,551,842. 1
Be it known that I, HnNRY CHARLES SHORT, a subject of the king of Grreat Britain, residing at 89 Villiers Road, Southall, in the county of Middlesex, England,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Stands for Displaying Garments, of which the following is a specification. i i
The present invention relatesto portable stands for supporting'coats and other garments, and has for its object to provide a stand'which shall be simple in construction, light in weight, and which when not in use may be disassembled or folded into a very compact space, to facilitate its transportasamples to the best advantage and at the,
same time preservetheir samples in better condition than if they were lald out 1n a folded condition as is now common.
According to this invention the portable stand comprises, when erected for use, a
horizontal tubular member of a' requisitelength supported adjacent its ends by two pairs of legs, each pair being hinged about an axis at right angles to the length of the bar in such manner that the legs const1- tuting each pair can'be splayed apart and so maintained by a cross piece pivoted to one leg and adapted to engagethe other leg of a pair by its opposite end, such engagement device being readily releasable.
Further each end of the horizontal bar extending beyond the pivot of the adjacent pair of legs haspivoted thereto one end o1 a I tie rod which can be turned downwards into an angular position, and means are provided upon the cross piece whereby the lower end of the rod can be detachably fixed so that the legs are stayed and the whole structure rendered rigid. The garments can then be suspended from the horizontal bar by means ofany well known coat hanger or like de-' vice. V 1 v v folded as hereafter described, thejmembers Such a construction can be readily of the pairs of legs being brought together and folded about parallel with the horizontal bar and the tie rods similarly located.
The invention will be further described with reference to an example of construction shown'on the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the portable stand in its open or erected position, F g. 2 IS an endvlew oi' the stand, and 1* 1g: 31s a view drawn to a larger scale, 'o-f-a preferred means of attaching the supporting legs f to the horizontal bar. 7 I
A; stand constructed according to the pres:
ent invention comprises a horizontal tribu lar bar 1, which bar 1 forms the upper member'of the stand, supported adjacent each end by pairs of legs 2, 3 jointed'to attach- 4 1 ments on the horizontal bar 1, the said pairs;
f legs 2', 3 being stayed when erected by tie rods 5, 6 connecting the horizontal bar 1 to cross pieces 7, 8, see Fig. 2, which latter'serve to connect the legs together and hold them ata predetermined distance apart.
The pairs oi" legs 2,3 are attached to the bar 1 at a suitable distance from the ends thereof by sleeves 9 fixed to the bar 1, which sleeves 9 carry or have made in apiece therewith, lugs 10 which project downwards to receive bolts or pivots 11 passing at right angles therethrough.
The upper ends of the pairs of supporting ]eg s-2,"3 are constructed with :lugs12, 13 (F g. 3) which are looselycarried on the bolt'll, springs 14 beingfitted on the bolts 11, between the lugs 10 of the sleeves 9 and the lugs 12, 13 of the' legs, so as to'prevent undesirable looseness ofthe joint while permitting the legs to be brought together-or splayed apart."
In the construction shown the'cross pieces of the legs, and the opposite end of each cross piece7, 8 is formed with a notch to take over a pin 16 on the'opposite leg. upon which pin the cross piece can be held. by,
a winged n'ut'asisho'wni y 7 The tie rods 5, 6 are each'pivoted to the 7. S are each pivoted as at 15, Fig. 2,to one bar 1 as aforesaid, the construction illustrated showing each tie rod pivoted at 17 to a bracket on the'bar 1 and having at its opposite end a shoulder 18 (orit may be a nut) which bears against a'slotted angle bracket 19 when the end of the tie rod has been passed into the slot of'the bracket, and thetie rod is then clamped in position on" the f bracket by a winged nut asshown'k When the stand has been erected an additional bar, preferably tubular such as is shown by the dotted lines at 20, may be fitted and be supported by being notched at its ends to engage the cross pieces 7, 8. In some cases where it is desired to erect a plurality of such stands one stand may be connected to another if so desired by socket pieces engaging and connecting the ends of the horizontal bars 1 of such stands.
Such a stand can be rapidly disassembled for transport by releasing the winged nuts of the tie rods 5, 6 and removing same from the slotted angle brackets, and releasing and detaching the ends of the cross pieces 7, 8 from the legs to which they are detachably fixed, and then the pairs of legs can be respectively brought together and folded up against the bar 1, the cross pieces 7,8 brought parallel with the legs, and the tie rods, 5, 6 also brought parallel with the bar 1, and the parts can then be strapped together. It will be observed that during this disassembling and folding no parts have been wholly detached one from another, and therefore liability of the structure being rendered useless by loss of any of its parts is obviated.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by ,(ietters Patent is 1. ,A portable collapsible stand for displaying garments; comprising in combination a horizontal bar from which said gar- ,ments are to be suspended, a supporting device adjacent each end of said bar, each said supporting device comprising a pair of supporting legs, means for loosely pivoting the upper ends of said pair of legs adjacent to each other and to said horizontal bar near one end thereof and about an axis extending at right angles tosaid bar toallow said pair of legs to'be splayed apart in planes at right angles to the axis of said bar to support the latter or be turned about said pivot to about parallel with said bar when not required for use, a cross piece for each pair of legs, a pivot secured to one end of said cross piece to one leg of a pair, means fordetachably connecting the other end of the cross piece to the other leg of the pair to hold said legs splayed apart, a tie rod for each pair of legs, a pivot connecting one end of said tie rodto one end of said? horizontal bar, said tie rod extending angularly. downwards to said cross piece of the adjacent pair of legs, and means for detachably connecting said end of said tie rod to said cross piece.
