BURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meshanticut Park, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Device for Forming Coupling Ends for Gas and Flexible Metal Tubing, of which the fOllOWiDg is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a device for forming coupling ends for gas and flexible metal tubing, and it has for its primary object to provide a simple mechanism having a single means of control for the combined operation of clamping, cutting or severing, and discharging or dislodging the tube.
The invention consists in a tube holder embodying a clutch, a stop arranged beyond the latter for gaging the length of tube to be severed, a withdrawable support or tail stock associated with the stop to supportthe free end of the fed tube, a cutter arranged in proximity to the chuckto sever the desired length of tube, a dislodging member functioning subsequent to the severance of the tube length, and a simplified means of control whereby upon operation in one direction the clutch, cutter and tail stock will be brought into play and upon a reversal of the control means these elements will be rendered inoperative and the dislodging member will function to positively remove the severed tube from the machine.
The invention further consists and resides in the features of construction and the arrangements and combinations of parts herein described in detail and succinctly claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved machine or device;

Referring in detail to thedrawings, to the bed of the machine are secured the standards 2 having ournal bearings-3 for the hollow chuck support 4 which is retained against lengthwise movement by collars 5 impinged against the opposite sides of one bearing 8 and which carries on its free inner end the chuck jaws 6 and the jaw-closing cam-sleeve '7, said sleeve having lengthwise movement imparted thereto through means of the yoke 8 engaged in a peripheral groove, as shown. A feed tube or guide 9 is fixed to the companion bearing 3 by screws lOand has guide extensions projecting inwardly into the chuck support. A pulley 11 fixed on the chuck support intermediate the journal bearings derives its power from a suitable source for rotating the chuck and its clamped tube. Obviously, if the chuck is inoperative it will merely slip about the tube since the latter issupported throughout the major portion of its length by the fixed extensions of guide 9. V
The tail stockcomprises a base 12 sur mounted by a, sectional and adjustable arm 13 to which is secured a' center support 14, the same, having a longitudinal slot 15 through which the bolt or screw 16 passes in securing the support to the arm for adjustment. The support has its end upturned to provide alined bearings for the center 17 to slide in, the forward bearing constituting a stop against which the tube is moved" to determine the length to be severed from' the stock. The length may be varied by'eflect' ing adjustment of the support 14. The center is normally projected to receive and sup port the tube, and overlying the projected.

A cutter 20 is reinovably secured in'a holder 21 on the inner end of a siidable bar pivoted to 22, the same being mounted in bearings 23 The cutter and its support are mounted for movement at an angle whereby the cut produced on the length of tube will provide a tapered end 25 and a flared end 26, Figure 7, the tapering out being simultaneously formed vith the formation of the flared cut on the next succeeding length of tube.
A bell crank lever 27 is pivoted to the base 12 and has one arm connected to an arm 28 carried by the bar 22 and the free ends of the two parallel members compris ing the companion arm provided with a set screw 29 designed to engage the yoke 8 and shift the cam sleeve 7 to effect clutching of the tube. A second bar 80 is pivotally con nected to the lever control 2 1, and has pivotally connected therewith an arm 31 which is carried on one end of a flexible shaft 3:2 while the opposite end of the latter is also provided with an arm 33 that has linked connection with a collar 34 fixed to the center 17. Consequently, rocking of the arm 31 will effect sliding of the center. The dislodger 18 is shaped to provide a cam portion 35 on which rides a pin 36 carried by the slide bar 30, whereby upon outward movement of the lever the pin will depress the dislodger to remove the severed tube from the center and the chuck in the event it has a tendency to stick or remain on the center.
In operation the tube is fed manually through the guide 9 and chuck until it is arrested by contacting with the stop of gage member 37 on the forward end of the support 14. The control lever is then swung inwardly, or to the full lined position 01- Figure 5, which movement performs the following operations, namely, clutches the tube to firmly hold it and also to impart rotary motion thereto, shifts the cutter in against the tube, and slides the center farther into the tube to provide a substantial support therefor during the cutting operation. The length of tube having been severed to produce the finished coupling end article, the control lever 2a is swung outwardly being limited by the right angular stop 38, which action releases pressure on the clutch sleeve, retracts the cutter, withdraws the center so that the coupling end or length of tube may drop from the machine, and depresses the dislodger 18 which functions to positively dislodge the length from the center or chuck in the event the same becomes caught.
It will be noted that the single lever 2a constitutes the sole means of control and by it the complete cycle of operations is effected. While the operator is actuating the lever with one hand he may be feeding the tube with the other and thus expeditiously sever the tube stock into the finished produtcs without the exercise of great physical effort or the provision of heavy machinery.
The tube lengths are produced ready for attachment to the ends of gas tubing or flexible metallic tubing, and do not require further finishing. The dislodger will be returned to its normal position by means of spring, not shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. A. machine for forming coupling ends for flexible tubing, comprising a station ary tube guide, a rotary chuck having a rearward hollow support journaled for rotation about the guide, the latter having a stationary extension into the hollow support, a cutter mounted for movement toward and from the chuck to sever the projecting end of the tube, and a single means of control for operating the chuck and the cutter.
2. A machine for forming coupling ends for flexible tubing, comprising a stationary tube guide, a rotary chuck having a rear- :vard. hollow support journaled for rotation about the guide, the latter having a station ary extension into the hollow support, a cutter mounted for movement toward and from the chuck to sever the projecting end of the tube, a tail stock adjustable to constitutc a gage stop for the tube as fed from the chuck, a center movably carried by the tail stock toward and from the chuck for entering the tube to support the projecting end thereof, and a single means of control for the chuck, the cutter and the center.
5. .91. machine for forming coupling ends for flexible tubing, comprising a stationary tube guide, a rotary chuck having a rearward hollow support journaled for rotation about the guide, the latter having a station ary extension into the hollow support, a cutter mounted for movement toward and from the chuck to sever the projecting end of the tube, a tail stock adjustable to constitute gage stop for the tube as fed from the chuck, a center movably carried by the tail stock toward and from the chuck for entering the tube to support the projecting end thereof, a dislodging member operable to remove the severed tube, and a single control for the chuck, the cutter, the center and the dislodging member.

A machine for forming coupling ends for flexible tubing comprising, a rotary chuck, a cutter movable toward and from the same to act on a projecting length of tube, a tail stock having a part forming a gage stop for the tube fed from the chuck, a center slidable through the stop part for entering and supporting the projecting end of the tube, an operating lever,a movable bar supporting the cutter and controlled by the lever, a dislodger mounted to move across the path of the center for removing a severed length of tube, and means for simultaneously operating the dislodger and withdrawing the center upon movement of the lever to 'inoperatively dispose the cutter.
10. A machine for forming coupling ends for flexible tubing for flexible tubing comprising a rotary chuck, a cutter movable toward and from the same to act on a projecting length of tube, a tail stock having a part forming a gage stop for the tube fed "from the chuck, a center slidable through the stop part for entering and supporting the projecting end of the tube, an operating" lever, a movable bar supporting the cutter and controlled by the lever a dislodger mounted to move across the path of the center or removing a severed length of tube, means connecting the bar to the chuck for rendering it inoperative when the cutter is withdrawn from operative position, and means for simultaneously operating the dislodger and withdrawing the center upon movement of the lever to inoperatively dispose the cutter.

A machine for forming coupling ends for flexible tubing including rotatable hollow work gripping means to receive the stock therethrough, means disposed beyond the work gripping means to engage the stock to allow the latter to be cut to predetermined lengths, means to .support the end of the stock projected beyond the work gripping means, cutting means, work dis- I lodging means, and means to move the gripping means, the cutting means and the supporting means to inoperative position and simultaneously to move the dislo dging means to operative position.
12. A machine for forming coupling ends including rotatable hollow work gripping means to receive the stock therethrough, means to support the end of the stock projected beyond the work gripping means, a stop for engaging the work through which the supporting means is movable, cutting means, and means to simultaneously move the work gripping means, the cutting means and the supporting means into and out of operative position.
13. A machine for forming coupling ends for flexible tubing including rotatable hollow work gripping means to receive the stock therethrough, means to support the end of the stock projected-beyond the work gripping means, cutting means, work dislodging means, and means for simultaneously moving the work gripping means, the
cutting means and the supporting means into and outof operative position.
