ity of downwardly swinging doors. It has been the general practice to place a pair of doors one on either side of the center sill between each adjacent pair of cross bearers. However, in certain' forms ,of cars, where cross-bearers are relatively widely spaced, it has been found desirable to place a pair of doors side by side on either side of the center sills and between each adjacent pair of cross bearers. The locking mechanism in common use for such general service car doors comprises a longitudinally extending locking shaft which is adapted to be moved laterally of the car to bring it under the free end of the doors, thus holding the doors locked. lVhen 4moved laterally in the reverse direction, the shaft clears the door ends, which. drop down by gravity to the open position. These longitudinal door shafts have beenvery generallysupported only in the cross bearers, slots of suitable length and inclination being pro-vided so that the lateral movement of the shaft is permitted. Vhere a single door is provided between adjacent cross bearers, the door has been supplied with bearing members adapted to bear upon the locking shaft immediately adjacent the cross bearers. The portion of the shaft between each pair of cross bearers may be considered, a beam supported at each end and with the load applied immediately adjacent the supports, it is not necessary for the shaft to be of great size or strength. However, with the new form of paired doors, one-quarter of the load is applied adjacent each support, while the remaining half of the load is applied at the center of the beam. This form of loading, even with the same total load, requires a beam of considerably greater strength.
t is an object of the present invention to provide in connection with general service cars having a pluralityof doors between adjacentcross bearers,kmeans for supporting the door locking shaft intermediate the cross bearers.
It is a further object to provide supportingmeans which are simple in design and which may be readily applied at .small cost.

Referring to the figures, the car comprises the ends 4,sides 5, center sills 6 andjcross bearers 7. As best shown in Figure l, a pair of doors 8 is provided between each pair of cross bearers 7. These doors are hinged at 9 adjacentthe 'center sills, and
their outer ends are free to swing down- 100 `wardly.
The outer ends of the doors are provided with bearing members 10 adapted to, engage the lock lshaft 11. This lock shaft 11 is provided at thecross bearers with `toothed 105v 14 and is provided with the portion 15 ex- 110 Patented Aug, i5, ieee.' y
tending under the car fioor. This portion 15 is provided with the slot 16 through which the shaft 11 is passed. It will be noted that the portion 15 extends but a short distance. beyond the ends of the doors, and since the member is relatively thin, there kwill be practically no obstruction to the passage of material from the car when the doors are open.
As best shown in Figure 2, the shaft 11 is thus supported intermediate the cross bearers 7 and the load from the doors 8 is transmitted to the shaft by members 10 adjacent the clip 13 and also adjacent the bearers 7. A comparatively light shaft will thus easily talre care of the load. The shaft 11 is rotated `by meansof suitable mechanism such as that shown in my Patent No. 1,318,444, granted October 11i, 1919, for door operating mechanism, which operating mechanism, however, forms no part of the present invention and has not been shown.
I claim:
l.' In a car having a plurality of doors located 'between adjacent cross bearers, a door locking shaft adapted to engage `the free endsfof the doors, and means supporting said locking shaft intermediate the cross bearers.

Ina car having a plurality of doors locatedibetweeny adjacent cross bearers, a door locking, shaft, said shaft extending longitudinallyof the carand transversely of the doorsy and adapted in the locked position to support the free ends of the doors, and means supporting said'loclring shaft intermediate the cross bearers.
3. In a car having a plurality of doors located between adjacent cross bearers, a door'loclring shaft adapted to engage the free ends of the doors, and means supporting said locking shaft intermediate the cross bearers, said means lbeing located' intermediateadjacent doors.

5. In a genera-l service car having a plurality of downwardly opening doors inter p osed between each pair of adjacent cross bearers, a longitudinally extending locking shaft adapted to be moved laterally under the free ends of the doors to support said doors in the locked position and to be moved laterally in the reverse direction for unlocking said doors, said shaft being supported in the cross bearers, andadditional supports for said shafts located intermediate the cross bearers.
6.-'In a general servicecar having a plurality of downwardly opening doors interose'd between each pair of adjacent cross earers, a longitudinally extending locking shaft adapted to be moved laterally under the free'ends of the doors to support said doors in the locked position and to be moved laterally in thereverse direction 'for unloclring said doors, said shaft being supported inthe cross bearers, and clips attached to the car side and having inwardly extendingportions provided with slots adapted toreceive and support the door locking shaft, said yclips being located intermediate adjacent doors and spaced from the cross bearers.
