PORTABLE WARDROBE.
fl ,d25,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, HELEN SOPHIA ALT- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elcho, in the county of Langlade and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Wardrobes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention comprises a portable wardrobe. It is contemplated, among its objects, to provide a device of this character which may have a top portion made in sections, hinged together at one point and capable of being spread apart to permit ready access to the interior; wherein there is a base portion of solid construction, connected to the top, preferably by some pliable fabric, and all around the edges of the two portions so as to constitute a completely closed container when assembled and capable of being folded approximately within the space occupied by the top and lower portions; and wherein the bottom portion will act as a weight to extender stretch the fabric when the device is hung or suspended from the top and give the wardrobe the form .of the two solid portions.
Other objects and advantages will in part be apparent and in part be brought out more fully in the description which follows.
Drawings are appended illustrating an embodiment of the invention, the following views being shown:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating, the device in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation showing the device in closed position and suspended as in use;
Fig. 3 is a view in top plan showing the top portion in open position in full lines, and inclosed position in dotted lines; and
Fig. 4 is a detail view in section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In these views, the reference-characters 1 and 2 designate components forming a top portion of a wardrobe. They are hinged as at 8, and have a toggle or scissors member formed from two arms 4;, pivotally connected at 5, and secured, at their opposite ends, to the portions 1 and 2, respectively, of the top portion. Near the adjoining edges of these top components there are secured guide and brace members 6, which extend out beyond the edge of the component to which they are attached. These, together with the specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8,
Application filed October 3, 1921. Serial No. 504,983.
toggle arms,-constitute a bracing means, and the toggle member also limits the extent to which the sections are to be spread apart. The underneath portion of the top components is also provided with hooks 7 for the reception of hangers for various articles of apparel or the like to be placed thereon. One of the upper components is also provided with means for suspending the device from a support, and as here shown there are bracket members 8 hingedly secured to the top and foldable down thereon when not in use. Angle bars 9 also secured to one of the components and provided with eyes to secure the top against lateral movementwith relation to the support.
Secured around the edges of the top components there is an inclosing member 10 comprising fabric or the like and constituting the side walls of the device. It is open along adjoining edges to permit access to the interior. The other end of this fabric is secured to a bottom component 11 here shown integral and of similar shape to the top when in closed position. This bottom acts as a weight to extend the fabric and give shape to the wardrobe, also as a support for articles which may be deposited on the inside of the inclosing member,
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the present invention comprises a wardrobe which may be folded up within the space, approximately, occupied by its upper and lower portions, and which, when extended, will constitute a compartment having a cross-sectional area equivalent to the size of the upper and lower portions and. of a length determined by the length of the fab ric connecting these members. While it is disclosed in the embodiment herein shown, certain variations are contemplated as with in its scope as set forth in the claims.
What I claim. is:
1. A portable wardrobe comprising a top including sections connected and adapted to be spread apart and folded; means for maintainin the sections in spread-apart relationship; a bottom; a foldable fabric bodyportion secured to the top and bottom and adapted to be shaped to approximately the form of the sections when open for use; said bottom acting as a weight to extend the fabric body-portion when the top section is suspended; and means for suspendingthe device from a support.
2. A portable wardrobe comprising a top including sections'connected and adapted to be spread apart and folded; means for maintalnlng the sections in spread apart I'elH/UIOIP ship a bottom; a foldable fabric body-portion secured to the top and bottom and adapted to be shaped to approximately the form of the sections when open for use; said bottom acting as a weightto extend the fabric body-portion whenthe top section is suspended; means for suspending the device from a support; said body-portion being provided with an openingfor access tothe interior of the wardrobe'when extended; and guide means associated -with the top tions; said;fabric,body-portion vadapted to 15 be folded around and inclose the top and bottom sections when these sections are: brought together.
