Description

J. P. NORT KEY 80 APPLICATION FILED NOV-2 1920- Patented Aug. 1, 1922. v

Specification of Letters Illatent. Pp tgntefl Aug, 1,
Application filed November 2, 1920. Serial No. 421,360.:
1 (a/Z "in/2 0777. it may concern,
lion lion.
This invention relates to sl tte-d bolts with which wedge keys are enuiloyed to setup the bolts. llith such bolts it is found that the frictioiii oi the wedge hey against the outer end oi t e slot tends to bend the stem of the bolt unless :i suitable temporary anvil be en1- ployed to l iel: up the outer end of the stem as the wedge is driven.
The method o'l driving is, however, troublesome and demands the exercise of skill. endv care on the part of the user, and my ob ject is to devise o'ilj'ective backing means for the bolt stem which may be effectively employed by any unskilled. or inexperienced pe son. and which cheep enougl'i to he ellowed to remain in position otter the wedge lziey has been driven. V
l attain my object by jlfoiming n. washer adapted to lit the bolt stein closely and. to iii leil e the wedge and on this wsiher l. :lfit mn whet l meg." term 21. slotted oi divided anvil :n'lnpterl to extend up sul itnntielly to the outer end oi the bolt :it QELCh side oi? the slot and subst the stem.
The wnsl'iei: is constructed in, detail subst hil y .is hereine'tter described and illustreteil in the accompanying drawings in whic h .iiitllX in close contact with wedge key and 3 the special washer in position on the hey bolt. One face of the washer 3 is suitably shaped to bear against.
the parts with which the bolt is used. c The other face is suitably shaped to form a. seat for the wedge key. An extension dis formed on the weshei' which is adopted to contact with the stem oil. the bolt pnssing through the washer. Preferably the extension is sulficiently long to reach approximately to the outer end of the bolt when the letter is in position. This extension is divided or slottedv by the blows ot a hzinnner the washer is held tightly against the part through which the bolt passes and thus the extension l is held firmly in position to serve as an anvil to re sist springing and bending of the stem of the bolt during the driving of the wedge key.
it will be noted that the key seat of the washer is inclined relative to the face which. is es the part through which. the bolt its so that the back of the key is substen .1 .lly at right angles to the axis of the bolt. The cram 311w action which occurs when the bee i. of the hey is inclined to the axis of the bolt. so that it first engages the outer edge of the. end of the slot, is ovoided. The key is thus more easily driven. and with lessened tending to spring the bolt.
l l hzit I claim as my invention is [L washer for a slotted key bolt having 2i key soot formed in one face and an extension from the same face divided from the seat to its outer end and adopted to be against the stem of the bolt in elinement with the slot to resist springing and bending of the stem of the bolt during the driving of the key, said JOHNP. non rnnx.
