JOI-IN C. FROSTEAD, lOli" DUL'UTH, MINNESOTA.
LANTERN'.
Application led. December 9, 1921.
To @ZZ whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that l, JOHN C. Fnosrnnn, a citizen oi' the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county oit St. Louis and State ot' li/iiiinesota, have invented certain new and usetul Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reiference being' had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rlhie invention relates to lanterns and has special reference to one used as a signal light by trainmen or the like.
rlhe principal object is to produce a lantern ot 'this character which will cast but a small amount ont shadow trom the bottom thereoll when used tor signalling purposes.
Other objects and advantages ot the novel structure Will appear in the further description ot the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming wart of this application in which like reierence characters indicate like parts:
Figure l is a side elevation ol one et the improved lanterns showing one embodiment oi the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the base portion of the lantern, and
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 3--3 Figure 2.
The base or body portion l of the lantern is cylindrical in 'form and elongated vertically and made as small in diameter as possible consistent With the proper feeding of the oil and housing' `of the Wick of the lantern. There are holes or openings 2 in the opposite sides of the body portion l and practically midway of its ends and about which holes are securely attached as by f-soldering or otherwise the terminals ot the tubular 'combination handle and oil container 3. gracefully upnf'ardly and over the top 0i' the lantern, forming a conveniently shaped handle.
Within the lower end of the body member l and normally extending upwardly therewithin beyond the openings Q. is the adjustable sleeve t, terminating at its lower end in a closed cap lilre portion 5, by which it may be readily manipulated. Adjacent the cap 5, upon the circumferential Wall of the sleeve, is a screw-threaded portion, indicated at 6, by which it is held Within the body port-ion l. llthis screw threaded portion is designed to t snugly so that the Speccation of Letters Patent.
This tubular member entends Patented Aue'. l., 19232.
Serial No. 521,082.
sleeve may be adjusted axially Within the body portion and remain in any desired predetermined position. The object oi such adjustment is to provide `lor the possibility of turning the sleeve et so that the larger opposed holes or openings .7 in the side Walls thereof may be made to communicate with the two ends or' the tubular member 3 when it becomes desirable to flood the Wiel; chamber, or the sleeve may be adjusted a quarter turn either Way so that the smaller opposed holes 8 may be made to communicate With the oil chamber, this adjustment being necessary for the normalV Working of the lantern.
Within the upper end ot the body portion l is a screw threaded, cylindrieally shaped, chambered, burner 9, through and to which the Wick stack l0 is attached, it being provided with the usual means for raising and lowering the Wick, About the burner chamber 9 and spaced slightly therefrom is an annular Wall ll through Which are formed a plurality ont air supply holes 12 and above these holes Vand :termed integral With the Wall ll is an annular rim or flange 13 upon Which rests the chimney let ol the lantern. The space intermediate of the upper edge et the annular Wall l1 and the Wall ot the chamber 9 is leit open so that the air coming in through the holes l2 is supplied therethrough to the interior of the lantern chimney. Y
Dovvnivardly arched supporting legs l5 are rigidly fixed to the lower portions ot' the tubular member 3 adjacent the body portion l and the lower ends or teet oi these legs, together with similarly shaped legs l@ et the guards 17, are mounted as by soldering or the like upon the annularly shaped Wire 18, forming a convenient, open base for the lantern.
lt Will be noted that there is no external opening Whatever to the tubular member 3 except through the body portion l, and that the lantern has to be inverted in order to be lled which is simply accomplished by the unscrewing of the sleeve 4f, and that in the event of the use of different grades o" signal oil the sleeve may be adjusted to the different sized openings therein, as previously described, to provide for the proper feeding of same to the Wick.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
icov
1. A signal lantern of thereharaeter de scribed including a tubular combined .handle and tank vertically sourrounding the 1antern.
2. Ak signal lanterniof the `character del.`
y tively small body portion, a burner `niounted upon the body portion, a Combination tubular handle and reservoir communicating With'the body portion and means Within the latter for regulating the flow of oil to be consumed, and an open base about and extending below the body portion, substantially as and for the purpose described;
In testimonywhereof l hereunto affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
JOHN o. FROSTEAD.
