Description

C. B. HAINES.
WATER SOFTENER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.I0, 1921. 1,423,657. Patented July 25, 1922,

CHARLES B. HAI1\TES, or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
To all whom it concern:v
a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana have invented new and useful Improvements in Water Softeners,
'of which the following is a specification,
- The general object of this invention isto soften water by bringing it into contact with a chemical or chemicals like lime and "alum, to coagulate and precipitate impurities in the water, andthe speclfic object is to provide means for so holding the chemicals, that through a supply pipe; and a further object is to provide means for regulating the quantlty of water from said supply pipe that: 7 comes into contact with the chemicals l accomplish the above, and other objects which will hereinafter appear, by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-' Fig. 1, is a view in longitudinal central section of the chemical holder embodying my improvements. Fig. 2, is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a side-elevation of the chemical in stick form,
"follows:
removed from the chemical holder.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views of the drawing.
The body of'the chemical holder, as shown in'the drawing, is cylindrical in form, closed at one end permanently and having a closure for the opposite end-in the form of a removable cap. The said cylindrical body 4 is preferably formed out of cast-iron the closed end 5 of which is sufficiently enlarged to provide for a cylindrical bore 6 extending-diavmetrically of the body 4. Each end of the bore 6 is screw-threaded to receive the respective ends of a supply pipe 7 screwed thereinso that the bore 6 forms a connecting portion of the supply conduit between said two pipe attachments. A by-pass 8 takes fromthe bore 6 through a suitable thickening of the wall of the body 4 and discharges through a valve seat 9 into a chamber 10. A valve 11 has a screw-threaded stem 12 which passes out of a gland 13 and terminates with a hand-wheel 14 for rotating the stem and seating and unseating the valve. A ort 15 connects the chamber 10 with the hol ow interior of the body 4. The cap .which closes the opposite end of the body from end 5 has a screw-threaded flange 15 which screws into a corresponding thread in WATER sor'rnNnn.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 25, 1922.
ap ntaatnmer ngue 1c, 1921. Serial No. aemso. I
the end of body 4. A port 16 leads from Be it known that l, CHARLES'B. HAINEs,
the interior of body 4 to a chamber .10 and a passage 8' similar to the passage 8 leads from a chamber 10' into the bore 6. The valve seat 9 surrounds the entrance to passage 8, and in the chamber 10 is a valve 11 co-operating with the seat 9' and having a valve stem manipulated by a hand-wheel 14. Suitable chemicals preferably in the form of a stick 18 are placed in the hollow interior of the body 4, and to hold the stick far enough away from the inside wall of said body to provide passages for the circulation that they may be reached by water passing 5 of water in contact with it ll provide a plurality of interior flanges 17, here shownas four in number equidistantly and radially placed. These flanges extend from the, closure 5 nearly but not quite to the cap at the other end, the space near the cap being left to provide free flow for water from space to space'between the flanges when the stickof chemical is new and undissolved.
For convenience in charging the body 4 with a new chemical stick, I provide a drain cock 19 through which the water may be suitably lowered. i p
The operation of my water softener is as With the valves 11 and 11' closed against their seats all flow of water from the supply pipes 7 will be cut ofi and the water will, pass uninfluenced by the chemical in the holder 4. But by removing both of said valves from their seats by turning handwheels 14 and 14' water from. the supply pipe will pass through the by-pass '8 111130 chamber 10 and to port 15 into the hollow interior of body 4, and after .circulating around the flanges 17, in contact with the chemical 18, will pass out through the port'16 intochamber 10 and thence through passage 8' into the bore 6. The amount of water cominginto contact with the chemical is. determined by the distance that the valves 11 and 11' are lifted from their seats. Therefore the amount of chemical added to the waterv is subject to regulation by manipulating the hand-wheels controlling said valves. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, vwhat I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination with a water supply pipe,.of a receptaclecontaining a substance in stick form to be acted on by the flowing water rib projections into the receptacle longitudinally of the latter to space the stick from the receptacle walls, said ribs being shortened to form end passages at the top of the receptacle and water passages making a circuit from the supply pipe to the spaces in the receptacle and back to the supply pipe for circulation of water into contact With said substance in the receptacle.
2. The combination with a Water supply pipe, of a receptacle containing a substance in stick form to be acted on by the flowing water, projections into the receptacle to space the stick from the receptacle walls, water passages making a circuit from the supply pipe to the spaces in the receptacle and back to the supply pipe for circulation of water into contact with said substance of the receptacle to space the stick from the said walls, a water passage from the supply pipe to a space in the receptacle, anotherwater passage from another space in the receptacle to the water'supply pipe, and valve means in each of said water passages to control the flow of water therethrough.
Signed at Indianapolis, Indiana, this the 7 day of Aug. 1921.
CHARLES B. HAINES.
