'This .invention relates to certain improvements in the method of and apparatus for making melders chaplets of the perforated sheet metal tubular type for positioning the core 'in t-he mold and for venting the gases therefrom during the introduction ofl the molten metal. K i y The main object of my invention is to successively perforate, feed, cut, kand bend the chaplets into the desired form from a continuous strip of sheet metal in practically one and the same operation, whereby to greatly expedite the Work, increase the output, and at the same time reduce the cost of production and labor incidental thereto.
Another object is to provide a. simple, practical, and eiiicient mechanism which may be attached to any standard form of punch press for producing those results.
Other objects and uses relating to specific parts of the machine will be brought out in the following description:

The bar 8* is preferably rectangular in cross section, but of greater vertical height than its width lengthwise of the machine and determines the tubular form Aof the chaplet which is bent around the same as will be hereinafter more `fully explained. A reciprocatory die or plunger -9- is movable horizontallyand lengthwise of the machine along a suitable guide-way -10-- in the base -1 for bending the advance end of the blank under the lower face of the cross-bar -`8, the inner end of said plunger -,-9,- being preferably rectangular in form has its upper face movable in a plane a slight distance below Vthat of the lower face of the bar -8- corresponding to the thickness ofthe metal of which the chaplet is formed.
An upper dieblock --l1- is suitably7 secured in a recess 12m of a supporting plate -13-` which, in turn, is secured to a vertically reciprocating plunger lll-4, whereby similar motion is imparted to the upper die-block 11.
A portion -8 of the die -11- extends below the remaining portion thereof and is preferably rectangular in horizontal sect-ion and of' substantially the same size as the opening into which it is adapted to move, so that the lower corner at the upper end face thereof may have shearing coaction with the adjacent inner end face of the dieblock -2- for severing the previously perforated chaplet blank from the main body of the strip A as the plunger -9- descends from its normal position.
This die -14- is also provided with a substantially rectangular recess -lopening from its lower face and registering with the cross-bar -S-, the` width of said recess being slightly greater than that of the crossbar corresponding to the thickness of the metal at each side of said bar so that when theplunger is brought `down the outer end wall ofthe recess which projects downwardly slightly beyond the opposite end wall will first shear Ithe blank from the main body and fold the corresponding end downwardly against the adjacent face of the bar #-8- while the opposite wall will perform a similar function, in folding the corresponding end of the blank downwardly across the adjacent face of said bar. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a supporting bed having a iemale punching die, a forml ing-die anda horizontal longitudinally eX- tending guide, all arranged in sequence along the bed, the female punchingdie being provided with a group of parallel vertical openings and a guide-way extending horizontally across said openings for receivingthe work, a plunger movable vertically toward and 'lfroln the supporting bed and provided with a male punching die and a forming-die arranged inseq'uence lengthwise of the bed, the male punchingtdie having a group of punches vertically alinedwith the openings in the' female' die and movable across the work guide as the plunger is lowered, said female'punching'die andthe openings therein extending above the'work guide to form guides riorthe punches, the supporting bed and plunger being-provided with cooperating bearing members in a vertical plane between the punching dies and said formingdies, a supplemental plunger slidable in the first named horizontal. guide to and Jfrom a position beneath the forming-die on the bed and toward and from the female die, and means actuated by 'theiirst named plunger when moved toward the bed for moving the supplemental plunger toward the 'female die.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a supporting bed having a female punching die, a forming-die and a horizontal longitudinally extending guide, all arranged in sequence along the bed, the 'female punching Adie beingprovided with a `-group oi parallel vertical openings and a guide-way extending horizontally across said openings for receiving the work, a

c L In a machine of the character described, the combination of a stationary support, a female die mounted on the sup-port and provided with'a group of parallel vertical openings and a Work guide extending horizontally across said openings between the lower and upper ends thereof, a `Work stop `on the support in alinement with the Work guide and some distance in advance of the female punching die :in the direction of feed of the Work, a male forming-die mounted on the support between the female punching die and stop and having its upper face disposed in substantially the same horizontal plane as that of the Work guide, a plunger movable vertically toward and from the support, a male punching ldie mounted on the plunger and provided with a group of ypunches in vertically alinement with the openings in the female punching die and movable in said openings vacross the Work guide Las the .plunger is lowered for perforating .the work in said guide, a female forming-die mounted on `the plunger to cooperate With'the male forming-die for folding the work thereon, a supplemental plunger slidable in ahorizontal plane upon the support .toward `and from the female punching die and `beneath the male forming-die for additionally folding the Work upon the last named die, and means actuated by the first named plunger when `lowered vfor forcing the supplemental plunger toward the female punching die, said means including a lever fulcrumed on the support `and operatively conneeted to the first named plunger. ,In Witness whereof I have. hereunto set my hand this 24th day ofOctober, 1919.
