My invention relates to magneto Vdrives and more A'particularly to the provision of a reversing means therefor.-
This application is a division of a copending application, Serijal No. 98,336, filed May 18, 1.916, nw Patent 1,351,763, Sept. 7,1920,
for an aeronautical motor. The\aeronauti cal motor 1n connectlon wlthfwhlch my 1n-' ventlon ls utlllzed ls' of such cbnstructlon that by simply reversing the cam shaftand with aafew other minor adjustments the operation of the'motor as a whole is reversed whereby it'may be used to serve as a clockwise or anti-clockwise motor as desired. It it evident, however, that if the direction of rotation of the motor proper is reversed it is necessarthat some reversing mechanism be interpolated 'between the magnetos and their drive shaft since the magnetos Iare constructed for operation in one direction only.

In Fig. 1, two magnetos 10 are shown supported upon theV .brackets 1l which 'are formed upon the crank case (not shown) of the motor. With reference to the longitudinal axis ofthe motor the magnetos l() are preferably symmetrically located in" order that they may both 'be driven from" the crank shaft 12 by means of the gears 13 and 14 which serve to operate the magneto drive shaft 15 which is located directly above the crank shaft. The drive shaft 15 is Vsuported 4at its extremities by vmeans of ball earingsll and'17 as shown in Fig.2. Each of the magnetoslO has its shaft 18'equipped with a bevel gear 19., The drive shaft 15 also saequipped with an adjustable bevelv e seen that thesL shaft is suchthat it may be placedupon the shaft in either of two positions as shown by v:the dOtted'lines at '22 whereby the relative' direction' of rotation o f the drives'h'aftsy15 -and the magneto shafts .1 8 may easily be re-l versed atwill.
The entire magnetodrive mechanism is enclosed within a housing'23 which is inpon the crank 'case casting. The housing 23 is. rovided as shown in Fig. 2 with a removab e end cap 24 which carries secured within it `the balll bearinfg 17 the which supports the outer extremity o drive shaft 15; VAt each side the housin 23 and .retaining caps 25 asshown in Fig. 1.
Thelopera'tion of my invention is'as follooA `isalso provided with. the removable bearings z Suppose it is desired to reverse the direction of rotation of the ma-gnetos relative to that of the drive shaft l5. The magnetos may very quickly be loosened from their mountings whereby they may be slipped to the right and left thereby partially withdrawing the gears 1.9 and their supporting' bearings and caps 25 from the housing 23 1n order to provide suitable clearance for subsequently withdrawing the gear 20. The cap 24 .which is held by means of the bolts 26 is next removed carrying with it the bearing 17 whereby access may be had to the interior of the housing permitting the pin 21 to be driven outand the gear 20 withdrawn through the opening. The gear 20 may then be slipped on in its reverse position and the pin driven throughtit to secure it to the shaft whereupon the cap and bearing may be replaced and the magnetos returned to their original positions so that their gears 19 are in contact with the gear 20.
Although I have described more or less specific details in setting forth my invention. it is to be understood that interpretation'thereof is to be made only in the light of its generic spiritand of the subjoined claims.
IVhat is claimed is:
l. In a internal combustion engine, the combination of a crank shaft capable of being driven in a reverse direction, an engine frame within which the crank shaft is mounted, a megneto mounted directly upon the engine frame at one end thereof, and a driving connection between the crank shaft and the magneto including a shaft journalled in the engine frame and geared to the crank shaft, said shaft being provided with a slidable and reversible geanwhereby through a change in the relative position of the gear on the shaft the magneto may be operated in the same direction even though the direction of rotation of the crank shaft be reversed.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a crankshaft, an engine frame, a shaft geared to the crankshaft, en
gine accessories carried by the engine frame respectively on opposite sides of the last l mentioned shaft, a bevel gear carried by the ulast mentioned shaft, said gear and said and a driving connection between said shaft' and said magnetos comprising a single reve'rsible element incorporated. therein to provide for the operation of the magnetos in the same direction upon the reversal of rotation of the shaft.
4. In an internal combustion engine of the reversible type comprising an engine frame, a crank shaft therein capable of being driven in a reverse direction, a drive shaft carried by one end of the engine frame and driven from said crank shaft, dual magnetos located symmetrically7 with respect to said drive shaft., a driving gear of the bevel type carried by each of said magnetos and a beveled gear slidably and reversibly mounted upon said drive shaft whereby the relative direction of the rotation of the drive shaft and the magnetos may be changed.
5. In an internal combustion engine, a drive shaft, dual magnetos located symmetrically with respect to said shaft, a gear carried by each of said magnetos, and a gear adjustably attached to said shaft so that the relative direction of rotation of the shaft and the magnetos may be changed.
6. In an internal combustion engine, a drive shaft, a pair of magnetos axially aligned but disposed on opposite sides of said drive shaft, a bevel /gear carried by each of said magnetos and a bevel gear slidably and reversibly attached to said shaft and acting as a'driving connection between said shaft and said magnetos .whereby relative direction of rotation of the shaft and the magnetos may be effected for the purpose set forth.
