T 0 @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, RALPH J. RILEY, al citizen of the United States,and a resident of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprocket Wheels, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to sprocket wheels having a continuous rim with pockets spaced apart and cut from its periphery inwardly, having rectangular sides and between said pockets an annular channel with flaring sides'for receiving a cable to which buttons are secured and adapted to drop into said pockets, and has 'for an object to provide a replaceable wearing shoe therefor adapted to be fitted into dove tails or guideways at the ends of the pockets to receive the thrust and wear when in operative contact with the buttons. v
In spocket wheels ofthis type, heretofore, the buttons secured to the cable have operated against the ends of the pockets, thereby wearing the end faces of the pockets, and in time requiring the wheel to be replaced.
An object of my invention is to provide wearing shoes-to be secured to the sprocket wheel at the points of contact of the buttons with the wheel so that the shoes which are readily replaceable will wear and the sprocket wheel will be free from wearing contact with the buttons.
Another object of my invention is to provide wearing shoes which are readily removable, and means for securing said shoes in operative position in the sprocket wheel.
lith these and other objects in view, my 'ivention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the drawings, illustrating my invention, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, and in which- Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of my invention.

Fig. 3 isa view in vertical section through the perimeter of a portion of the rim. In this view, the rim is adapted to receive the wearing shoe inserted from the inner edge of the rim.

In the drawings illustrating my invention, I have shown my improved sprocket wheel 1 driven by a cable 2 to which latter a series of equally spaced buttons 3 are secured. The sprocket wheel l is provided in its periphery with pockets 4 equally spaced apart a distance similar to the spacingof the buttons 3. The pockets 4 are preferably rectangular in cross section with sloping end faces and parallel sides Between said pockets the sprocket wheel is provided in its periphery with an annular channel 6 having* flaring sides 7.
The pockets 4 have the dove tailed grooves or guideways S formed in their end faces adapted to accommodate my improved wearing shoes 9. The wearing shoes 9 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, are inserted into the guideways 8 from the inner face of the rim. These shoes are tapered, the narrow outer end of each shoe beingchanneled to form a continuation of the channel 6 for receiving the cable 2, and have beveled side edges 10 thereby holding the wearing shoe securely in the guideways 8. For locking the wearing shoe 9 in position in guideways 8, I have provided on each side face 5 of the pockets 4 at a corresponding point thereof, a rectangular hole 12, which hole aligns with a rectangular hole 13 provided in the wearing shoe 9 when the said shoe is in position in guideways 8. A tapered pin 11 is adapted to be inserted in the rectangular holes thus formed in the side faces 5 and the wearing shoes 9 and to be locked therein by means of the nut 14 located at the small end of the pin 11. The wearing shoes 9 are each additionally locked in the guideways 8 by means of a pla-te 15 secured to the inner face of the rim by means of the bolts 16. These plates close the guideways 8 so that the shoes cannot be lost therefrom and in addition render it impossible to remove the wearing shoes without rst removing the plates.
In the Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a modiication of my invention with a Wearing shoe 9 adapted to be inserted in the guide- Ways E5ZL inwardly from the outer edge of the rim, the guideways 8a being tapered inwardly to conform to this type of lWearing shoe. The Wearing. shoes 9a have each a rectangular opening 13 therein, in Which the head of a bolt 15'L1 is inserted, the said bolt extending through a hole in the plate 14? securely locks the shoe 9a in operative position in theguideways 8a.
