Specification of Letters Patent.
EASEL FOR FLORISTS USE.
Patented July 4., 1922,
Application filed March 11, 1922. Serial No. 543,041.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Easels for Florists Use, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of my present invention hereinafter described is to improve certain features of the patent to me No. 1,407,490, February 21,1922, in which the rear leg of the easel is, by a screw-eye and nut, clamped in position against beveled grooved lugs projecting laterally from the rear head member, and limited to longitudinal movements for adjustment purposes.
To this end my present invention consists in the provision of means for clamping the rear leg of an easel in position whereby the leg is permitted both longitudinal and lateral movements, and the screw-eye is dispensed with, as are also the beveled lugs.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my easel. Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 shows a front and edge View of the front head member of the easel.
' Figure 4; shows similar views of the rear head member of the'easel. I
Figure 5 shows a side and an edge view of the rear leg clamping and holding means.
Figure 6 shows one of the easel support ing legs. s
Figure 7 shows a sectional and edgeview of a member which forms a part of the means for clamping the parts of the easel together, and also as a hinge support for the leg holding member.
Figure 8 is a sectional view showing the hinge supporting member in position in the rear head member of the easel.
. Figure 9 is a plan view of the nut forming a part of the clamping means. i Like reference letters andnumerals indi cate like parts wherethey occur in the several views. i
' A represents the easel head composed of two separable members l and 2 each hav ing on its inner face oppositely disposed angularly directed grooves located in con verging planes, as 'in my Patent No. 1,407,490, February 21, 1922. The front member 1 is provided with a centrally disposed perforationl and the rear member 2 is provided with a centrally disposed oblong or rectangular perforation 2 Said members 1 and 2 are arranged and adapted to be clamped together with the angularly directed grooves and perforations of one member registering with those of the other member. The two front supporting legs of the easel are placed and held in the grooves of the members 1 and 2 when the latter are oined. (Figs. 1, 2). Said head members are clamped together by a third member 3 one edge of which is straight and abuts against the outer face of the rear head member 2. The outer edge of 3 is angularly inclined relatively to the plane of the inner edge. On the inner edge of the member 3 I provide midway of the length of said edge a rectangular extension 3 and a laterally extending v threadedshank 1. (Fig. 7). fitted for insertion in the perforations of the head members 1 and 2 when the latter v are joined, the extension 3 engaging the rectangular or oblong perforation 2 and the shank 4 passing through both the perforations 3 and 1 (Figs. 1, 2, 8). Said member 3 is further provided wit-h a perforation 8 to receive a bolt 9 which serves as a hinge pivot for the holder of the rear leg of the easel. (Figs. 2, v7, 8). Said holder 10'has a tubular body portion open throughout one side with laterally extend ing wings'10 10?, positioned on each side of said opening, and spaced a distance apart laterally and longitudinally. (Figs. 2, 5). The upper wings 10 are pierced to receive the hinge pivot bolt 9, and the lower wings are pierced to receive a thumb-screw or a screw 11 which serves to clamp the rear leg 8 ofthe easel in position in the holder 10. (Figs. 1, 2). The supporting legs of the easel are readily adjustable longitudinally and the rear leg further has capacity to swing on the pivot 9 tovary its angular re lation to the front legs of the easel, and to bring itinto parallelism with the front legs so the easel may be closed to occupy lessroom when not in use. Furthermore the rear leg having an oscillating 0r hinged movement on the member 3 the easel may easily be adjusted to inclined or uneven surfaces. Toassem'ble'the parts the front legs are placed in the groovesof one of the head members, the other head member superimagainst the rear head..member: thatc'thea boss 3 will engage the perforation 2 and the shank 4 will pass through the perf'ora tions 1 and 2 and be engaged by the nut 5, to. clam-pthe said parts together: The holder 10 is then secured to the member 3 by the hinge pivot bolt 9, the rear leg inserted in the holder 10 and clampedtherein by the screw 11. The-rectangular bossB' in' engagement with the corresponding. perforation 2 of the rear head member: serves to prevent sid'ewise movement ofthe member 3 and thereby maintains the rear leg. ofthe easel'in proper posi-tionfor service.
The perforation 2 may be of: the outline of a key-hole or other form so long as. it. serves the intended purpose of receiving a like projection on the. inner. edge of. the. member 3'to prevent the latter from turning or twisting.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent':'
