JOHN H. FLYNN, JR., OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE EUREKA TACKLE BLOCK COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
TACKLE HOOK.
Application filed May 1, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. FLYNN, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Tackle Hook, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to produce an improved tackle hook which may be constructed of stock material such as round and half round bar stock with less expense and with greater strength than hooks of cast or forged construction and also having less weight than other hooks known to me.
This and other objects are attained in the hook construction described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which.
Fig. l is a perspective view of a hook embodymg my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modified form of hook embodying my invention.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 15L of Fig. 3.
Figs. 5 and 7 are perspective views of modified forms of my invention.
Figs. 6 and 8 are transverse sectional views taken on the lines 66 and 8-8 respectively of the respective Figs. 5 and 7.
In Figs. 1 and 2 as well as in Figs. 3 and 1- the material of which these hooks are constructed is of round bar stock and the construction of each is identical except for the position of the loop or eye with relation to the hook. The loop 9 in Fig. 1 is at rightangles to the hook 10 and the loop 11 in Fig. 3 is in alignment with the hook 12. In the construction of each of these hooks the proper length of material is cut off and a bend 13 is made centrally thereof. The branches 14: and 15 of the loop and hook are then brought into position to be embraced by the bend 13, the extending ends beingbent into hook shape as shown and the tips 16 and 17 turned slightly outwards.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1222.
Serial No. 378,152.
The forms shown in Figs. 5 and 7 are made of half round material, the loop 18 of Fig. 5 being in alignment with the hook 19, while the loop 20 of Fig. 7 is at right an gles to the hook 21. In the form shown in Fig. 5 the half round material is given two complete turns to form the loops the ends being twisted and brought together beyond the loops to have their flat sides in contact, the hook then being formed and the tips 22 and 23 being turned slightly outward as shown. In Fig. 7 the material is merely bent centrally of its length, the loop 20 is formed by bringing the flat sides together, the hook 21 is formed and the tips 24 and 25 are bent outwardly as shown.
Of the four forms shown I prefer those shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, inasmuch as these hooks being made of half round material are stronger than those of the forms made of round material shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive. The principle upon which this is based is that of a beam in which the greatest cross sectional dimension is placed vertically when the beam is positioned for supporting a load.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A hook consisting of a length of material bent cent-rally of its length to form a loop and having the ends beyond the loop brought together to formn hook.
2. A hook consisting of a length of half round material bent centrally of its length to form a loop and having the flats of the half round material brought together and the ends bent into hook shape beyond the loop.
In witness whereof, I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. FLYNN, JR.
