Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted ,hule 27, 1922 application filed August 1a, 1920. sei-m1 no. 4o4,4ss.- i s ed a new and useful Signal, of which theV following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a simple means whereby the driver of a motor propelled vehicle may indicate to the drivers of other vehicles, his intentions with regard to the control of the vehicle which he is driving.
The invention aims to provide a device of the kind mentioned which may be mounted on acar without defacing the same, the device being adjustable to fit the car.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lith the above alq other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, wit-hin the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a portion of an automobile whereunto the device forming the subject matter of this application has been applied; Figure 2 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a top plan wherein parts are omitted; Figure 4 is a fragmental longitudinal section showing a portion of one of the side members of the frame; and Figure 5 is a diagram illustrating the signal circuit.
The device forming the subject matter of this application embodies a triangular frame, including a base 1 of hollow form, to receive and-house a battery 28, the base being open at its top. The frame comprises side members, including lower tubes 2, and upper tubes 3, the lower ends of the tubes 2 being secured in the base 1 adjacent to the outer edges thereof. The tribes 2 are telescoped into the tubes 3, relative longitudinal movement between the parts 2 and 3 being prevented by clamping devices of any sort, such as set screws 4. The upper ends of the 5' to the tubes v6 and 7 of a top member, the tube 7 being slidable for adjustment in the tube 6, relative movementbetween the tubes 6 and 7 being prevented by a `clamping de tubes 3 are connected by elbows or couplings fvice or set screw 8. The base 1 is adapted to be secured to the lower portion 9 of a wind shield frame 10, the top or upper member of the triangular frame being disposed adjacent to the top of the windl shield frame. Thebase 1 is suppliedwithouter seats or notches 11, located adjacent to the side members of the triangular frame, there being seats 12 in the base, located inwardly of theV seats 11, the seats 12 being deeper than the seats 11. The base has a single central seat or notch, denoted by they numeral 14.
n The invention comprises an arm, including a lower. member 15 telescoped for ad* j ustment into an upper member 16, relative lmovement betweenthe members 16 and 15 being prevented by a set screw 17. The member 15 is supplied with a rearwardly extended pin 18 carrying a knob 19. The pin 18 may be received in any of the seats 11, 12 or 14, the upper member 16 of the arm. being received slidably in a slot 20 formed in the elements. 6 and 7 which make up the top member of the triangular frame. The pin 18 constitutes a fulcrum on which the arm 15-16 may be swung laterally, in the slot 20, toward and away from the inclined side members of the triangular frame. It is possible to place the pin 18 in any of the seats 11, 12 or 14 and,` when the pin is mounted in the seats 11, the arm 15-16 being shifted accordingly, to the ends of the slot 20, an indication is given that the vehicle is about to turn to the left or to the right. When the vehicle is to remain stationary, the pin 18 is received in the central seat or notch 14, the arm 15-16 being disposed in the vertical position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. Vhen it is desired to give no signal at all, then the pin 18 may be lowered into' one of the seats 12, a flag 25 at the upper end of the part 16 of the arm being lowered accordingly.
Electric lamps 26 may be mounted on the upper portion of the triangular frame, at the ends thereof, and upon the arm 6. The
lamps 26 are located in a circuit including a f a battery 28 housed in the base 1, the base' having a switch 30, interposed in the conductor 27, and constituting means whereby the lamps 26 may be lighted or turned out at will. The structure last above defined constitutes means whereby a signal may be given after nightfall, when the arm 15-16 and the liag 25 cannot be seen.
Through the instrumentality of the switch 30, the lamps 26 may be lighted and extinguished together, to flash signals according to any predetermined code. 1t is advantageous to have two of the seats 12, to the end that the pin 18 may be moved over into one of the seats 12 readily, from either of the seats 11. When the arm 15-16 is swung to the left or to the right, to a position adjacent to one of the side members 2 3, the pin 18 is received in the adjacent seat 11. The arm 15-16 thus is held close to the selected side member 2 3, in parallel relation thereto, and does not materially encumber the view. The upper end of the element 16 is held frictionally in the slot 20, against movement, saving under the application of an appreciable force, and the arm 'l5- 16 will, therefore, remain in any position to which it may have been swung transversely. Any suitable means may be employed for attaching the device to a vehicle, this mattei' being a detail well within the scope of the skill of a mechanic.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A traiiic indicator comprising a frame including a base and a top bar, an arm slidable on the top bar and co-operating elements carried by said arm and base permitting` a lateral shifting of the arm and vertical movement thereof.
2. A trafiic indicator comprising a frame including a base and a top bar; an arm slidable on the top bar and provided with a projection, the base having seats receiving the projection and permitting a lateral shifting of the arm, one of the seats being deeper than the other, to permit a downward movement of the arm.
3. A traflic indicator comprising a frame, a laterally movable arm provided with a projection, said frame having seats for receiving the projection and permitting a lateral shifting of the arm, one of the seats being deeper than the other to permit a downward movement of the arm.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, 1 -have hereto afixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
Mrs. MRJR'lE BELLE ARMITAGE.
