GARMENT HANGER.
, Application filed July 12,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, EUNICE SUTTON and SENA M. WARD, citizens of the United States, and, residents, respectively, of New York city, in the counties of New York and Bronx and State of New York, have invent ed certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment hangers and more particularly to a hanger especially adapted for supporting ladies dresses suclr as evening gowns, for example; and has spe cial reference to the provision of a hanger of this nature constructed andadapted for independently supporting the waist and skirt portions of a dress in an effective manner.
A prime desideratum of our invention comprehends the provision of a garment support for so supporting ladies dresses as to minimize or eliminate the distorting strains or stresses incident to the present 'use of the known types of garment hangers,
and for so supporting the waist and skirt from the weight of the skirt, with the waist hung to assume its natural shape as intended for wear. fl Ladies dresses and more particularly those which comprise attached waist and skirt members, are usually supported from the shoulder portions of the waist, the entire weight of both waist and skirt being sustained by these shoulder portions. The weight of the skirt effective on the waist has a pronounced tendency to pull on the waist, subjecting the latter to strains and stresses resultingin misshap ing or distorting the same, this being especially true in dresses where the skirt is made of relatively heavy material such as serge or jersey silk, and more especially when beaded or provided with spangles, andt he waist made of relatively light material such as taffeta silk, satin or chiffon. The weight of both skirt and waist members effective on the shoulder portions subjects the latter to similar distorting strains, and where the shoulder portions comprise shoulder straps or'yokes, which are usually made of a delicate fabric such as chiffon material, the yoke portions are subjected to liabllity of rapid wear and tear. It has therefore been found Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 27 1922 1921. Serial No. 484,019.
desirable to provide a garment hanger especially adapted for supporting ladies dresses in which the waist or shoulder members or both are relieved of distorting strains and stresses with each member of the garment efliciently supported independentlyof the other; and the provision of such a garment hanger is a prime object of our invention. \Vhere the skirt and waist members of the dress are independently supported it has been further found desirable to support the dress member so that notonly will any tendency of the waist to assume a distorted appearance-be eliminated, but so that any tendency of the waist to be wrinkled to assume undesirable folds and creases will be obviated. The provision of a garment hanger construction in which wrinkling or rumpling of the waist is minimized, with the waist hung to assume its natural shape as worn by the person, is a further prime desideratum of our invention. v The principal objects of ourinvention therefore include, besides the provision of a garment hanger especially adapted for supporting ladies dresses, the provision of such a hanger in which the attached waist and skirt members of the dress are inclependently supported with the weight of a skirt removed from the waist and the shoulder straps or yokes relieved from sustaining the weightof both the skirt and waist,
undesirable distortion being obviated; the further provision of such a hanger in which the waist is supported to take and hold its natural shape, undesirable folds and wrinkles being prevented; the further pro vision of a garment hanger so constructed as to provide efiicient means for retaining the shoulder straps or yoke members in position on the hanger against sliding or slipping therefrom and the provision of a garment hanger of exceedingly simple construction, made of inexpensive stock, subject to simplicity of manufacturing operations, the whole providing a low cost unit.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, our invention consists in the elements and their relation one to the other, as hereinafter particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims, reference and delicate fabric.
for the skirt also obviates and eliminates bein had to the accompanying drawings or waist portion or member 12, side por-,'
tions 13 and 14 of the frame spacedly connecting the shoulder and waist members 11 and 12, the frame including the usual hang in or supporting hook 15.
%he shoulder member 11' is intended for supporting the waist of a dress and more particularly the strap oryoke portions of the waist, the waist member 12 being in; tended.for independently supporting an attached skirt of. the dress in a manner as particularly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. By independently supporting the waist and skirt portions of the dress the weight of the skirt is removed from the waist and the shoulder straps of the said waist, the strains and stresses which sub- 'ect the waist and the strap portions to distortion being thereby eliminated, an object especially desired in dresses of the type wherein the skirt member is made of rela-' tively heavymaterial with the waist 'Inemher and shoulder portions made of a light Independent support any possibility of tearing the fabric. a
In order to prevent the waist from being delicate waist I wrinkled or rumpled during support of the desired that the waist be hung in such a same, to eliminate the production of any undesirable folds and creases therein, it is manner as to assume its natural folds and ordinary shape as intended for wear by he user. To this end the shoulder. and
- waist members 11 and 12 are spacedly arranged to correspond to the distance between corresponding members ofthe human body. With the shoulder and waist members so spacedly arranged the waist may be hung on the hanger, while the skirt isindependently supported thereby, so that the waist will take and hold its natural form and shape as is desired for wear, this be ing clearly indicated in Figures 1 and 2-of the drawings. v t
For purposes of efiiciently supporting the strap or .yoke portions of a dress, means is desired for retaining the strap or yoke portions on the hanger. and for preventing the same from sliding or slipping. To this end the hanger is provided with oppositely dress, as particularly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. For the purpose of efiiciently supporting the skirt member from spaced points and for so supporting the skirt as to prevent wrinkling thereof, the waist member 12 is supplied or provided with hook engaging members which may take the form of the spaced loops 18 and 19 respectively, the said loops being intended for the reception of hooks or loop portions, which may be made of braid, and attached to the waist band of the skirt, this manner of supporting the skirt being particularly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
For -the purpose of adapting the device for general use, as for supporting independent skirt and waist portions, and for supporting'sleeved waists as well as sleeveless waists, the hanger isprovided with the oppositely arranged outwardly (extending portions 20 and 21 for 'efliciently supporting the shoulders and sleeve members of the waist. To adapt the device to its uses it will be noted that the hanger of our invention simulates the outline of the upper portion of the human trunk.
For the purpose of producing an iiiexpenbeing either soldered to the bottom of hook portion 15, or twisted thereabout, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the whole pro-.
viding hanger. I
The use of our improved hanger will, in the main, be apparent from the above de-- scription thereof. It will be further apa unitary and integral garment parent from the foregoing that we have pro- ,vided a garment hanger especially adapted for use with ladies dresses in which attached skirt and waist members of 'a dress may be 120 'ner, with the waist member, usually made independently supported in an eflicient manof delicatefabrics, and its supporting portions such as the shoulder straps or yokes relieved from the distorting'weight of the heavier sln'rt member of the dress, with the' waist member so supported and hung on the garment support as to minimize or prevent I wrlnklingof and undesirable folds in the waistfabric, with the waist being, furthermore, hung to attain its natural shape as desired and intended for use. It will be furagainst movement or displacement from the hanger. The hanger is, furthermore,- constructed from a single piece of metal bent intothe desired configuration, this providing a simple and inexpensive unit.
' While we have shown and described our device in the preferred form,'it will be obvious that many changes and modifications may be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention, defined in the following claims.
We claim:
