Description

' A. FIGIELEK.
TOENAIL GROWING GUIDE.
APPLICATION HLFU AUG-5. 1921.
1 A20 ,()85, Patented June 20, 192 2.
A.I TTI[01 TY FIGIELEK. OF CENTBALIA, ILLINOIS.
TEDENAZIUG'HOYVING GUIDE.
To all wi/iom may concern: 7
Be it known that l. .trv'ruozvr Funnies, citizen of the United States, resiiiling at Centralia, in the county of ll larion and Fitate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Toenail-Growing Guides, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a device for preventing and curing ingrowing toe-nails, and it has for an object to provide a simple and inexpensive device which can be worn upon. the affected toe and which will act to prevent the nail growing sideways into the flesh.
A further object relates to the provision of a simple means for providing for longitudinal tHljllStITIGIIt of the device to fit different toes.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing the device in position upon a foot.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3- 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5---5 of Fig. 2.
As here embodied my invention comprises briefly. a clip adapted to engage over the side of the affected nail and having means whereby it may be secured upon the toe of the user. such means being preferably adjustable so that the clip may be secured on toes of different lengths.
in the drawings the clip is indicated genorally at 10 and is of U-shape as seen in plan view, the legs of the clip being numbered specifi ally 10, and the connecting yoke-piece 10.
Each of the legs 10 has an integral flange element 11 bent haclrwardly thereunder pan allel thereto. leaving a narrow channel as shown on each side of the clip in which the side edges of the nail are adapted to engage.
For attaching the device to the toe of the user a short. flexible strap 12, of cloth or other suitable material is connected at one Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed august 5, 1921.
Patented June 20, 1922..
Serial No. 489,978.
end to the yoke-piece 10 of the clip and at its opposite end to a plate 13, the yoke-piece and plate having slots 141 and 15 respectively formed therein to receive the ends of the strap .12 which are doubled back and sewn to'the main body of the strap.
The plate 1 is curved transversely of the toe to lit the contour of the latter and is of corrugated formation, the corrugations extending in the direction of curvature of the plate.
The plate 1 3 adapted to lie upon the toe when the device is in use and is freely engaged on its upper side by a second plate 18 having corrugations corresponding to the corrugations in the plate 18 and fitting therein. The plate 18 is preferably of somewhat greater transverse dimension than the plate 13 and has its extended ends formed with slots 19 for attachment of a pair of straps or braids 20 which are adapted to be wound around the toe to secure the device in place,
These straps preferably taper from end to end, their free ends being narrow so that a knot formed by tying the two ends together will be of minimum bulk.
In the use of the device the clip 10 is placed upon the toe-nail, indicated at 25, as shown in the drawings with the side edges of the nail engaging in the channeled elements formed by the flanges 11, the clip being inserted in place by moving it backward over the nail, as will be understood.
The attaching plate 18 is then placed over the plate .13 in whatever position, longitudinally of the toe, as may be most convenient and comfortable for the user, and the straps 20 wound around the toe and tied together at their ends as in Fig. 1, the pressure of the corrugated plates upon one another holding the plate l3 against longitudinal movement, v
as will be apparent.
With the device in position the edges of the nail will be prevented from spreading laterally and guided in their growth, thus relieving the condition and eventually effecting a cure.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A device of the class described com prising a one-piece clip of U-shape and formed to present confining side channels, adapted to receive the edges of a toe-nail therein, and means attached to the yoke-piece of the clip for securing the same to the foot of the user.
2. A device of the class described comprising a one-piece clip of U-shape adapted to lie upon the toe-nail of the user and having backt-urned flanges on the outer sides of its legs adapted to engage under the edges of the toe-nail, and means for securing said clip to the foot of the user.
3. A device of theclass described com prising a clip of U-shape having backturned flanges on the outer sides of its legs, and means for securing said clip to the foot of the user, and means comprising a curved plate attached to the clip, a second curved plate resting freely upon said plate, and straps attached to said second plate.
device of the class described comprising a clipfof U-shape having backturned flanges on the outer sides of its legs, and
means for securing said clip to the foot of the user, said means comprising a curved plate attached to the clip, a second curved plate resting freely upon said plate, and straps attached to said second plate, said strap tapering in Width from end to end.
5. A device of the class described comprising a clip of U-shapehaving backturned flanges on the outer" sides of its legs, and means for securing said clip to the foot of the user, said. means comprising a curved plate attached to the clip, a second curved plate resting freely upon said plate, and straps attached to said second plate, said plate being each of corrugated section longitudinally of the device.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.v
