DETAGHABLE HANDLE FOR VESSELS.
aaiaeeo.
Application filed June 2, 1921. serial No. 474,514.
To @ZZ fio/0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN J. KIRBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Susanville, in the county of Lassen and State of California, halve invented certain new and useful improvements in Detachable Handles for Vessels; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient handle for use in connection with cooking and like culinary vessels such as pans, kettles and the like which, being constructed separately from the vessel, and adapted to be removed therefrom during the time that the vessel is on the stove or duringthe cooking operation, is readily applicable to the same when it is desired to move, lift or remove the vessel from the stove, and which may not only be attached and detached with facility and without loss of time, but which when secured in place is locked against any reasonable possibility of accidental removal involving the dropping of the vessel; and with these objects in View the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of a handle embodying the invention applied in the operative position to a cookingvessel.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectionalview on the line 3 3 of Figure 2, showing the locking bolts in their extended position.
Figure 4 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 3 showing the locking bolts in their retracted position and showing parts of the rear wall of the bearing member.
The handle consists essentially of a grip portion 10, having a head 11 provided with a depending bearing plate or member 12 which is adapted for reception by a. keeper 13, which is permanently secured in place by rivets 14 or the equivalent thereof to a vessel indicated at 15, said keeper being provided at its lower edge with a forwardly .directed bearing seat 1G for the reception of the transverse bearing portion 17 of a looped obliquely disposed brace 18 extending downwardly and inwardly from the handle adjacent to the inner end of the grip portion thereof.
rihe bearing member 12 is hollow, being provided with a removable outer or rear wall 19 secured in place by swaged lugs 2O or theJ equivalent thereof, and within the cavity of the bearing member, which thus constitutes a casing, are arranged transversely movable locking members 21 of looped form with the extremities thereof directed laterally to form locking bolts 22 extending through guide openings 23 in the side walls of the casing 12 for engagement with registering openings 24; in the end walls of the keeper 13. These locking members are connected by links 25 with a plunger 26 reciprocably mounted in the casing represented by the bearing member, having a reduced lower end 27 fitted in a guide 28 in the casing, and connected at its upper end with an operating member 29 consisting of a lever fulcrumed at 30 and provided with an actuating spring 31. In the construction illustrated the extremity of the lever is bifurcated as indicated at 32 to engage a head. 33 on the upper' end of the plunger and when the plunger is in its depressed position the locking members are held separated or spread to maintain the terminal locking members or bolts thereof in extendedposition for engagement with the openings 24 in the end walls of the keeper so as to lock the handle to the vessel. To disengage the handle and remove it from the vessel, it is only necessary to depress the free rear or outer end of the operating lever 29 which is located within convenient reach of the thumb of a hand grasping the grip portion 10 of the handle, to thereby retract or withdraw the locking members to disengage the bolt members or elements thereof from the keeper. The bearing member may then be slidingly removed from the keeper. The rear or outer end of the handle is preferably provided with a fork 34; as a means of removing the tops or covers of cooking vessels to avoid the necessity of using` a cloth or other separate device for that purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A detachable handle for cooking vessels having a keeper secured to and carried by the vessel, a grip portion provided with a terminal depending bearing member for engagement with said keeper, transversely movable locking members mounted upon the bearing member for engagement with openings in the end walls ol the keeper, a plunger operatively connected With said locking members for effecting the extension and retraction thereoi", and an operating lever connected withV the plunger and' terminally arranged Within convenient reach oi' the hanelle grip.
2. A detachable handle for cooking vessels having a keeper secured to and carried by the vessel, a grip portion provided with a terminal depending bearing member tor engagement with said keeper, transversely movable locking members mounted upon the bearing member Ytor engagement with openings in the end walls ot the keeper, a plunger' operatively connected with said locking members tor effecting the extension and retraction thereof, and an operating lever connected with the plunger and termi nally arranged within convenient reach ot the handle grip, the operating lever being spring actuated to yieldingly hold the same and the elements connected therewith in an adjusted position.
3. A detachable handle for cooking ves-V sels having a keeper secured to and carried bythe vessel, .a grip portion provided with a terminal depending bearing member for engagement with said keeper, transversely movable locking members mounted upon the bearing member for engagement with openings in the end walls of the keeper, a plunger operatively connected with said locking members 'for effecting the extension and retraction thereof, and an operating lever connected With the plunger and terminally arranged vvithin convenient reach of the handie grip, the operating lever being spring actuated to retain the locking members in their extended and engaging position.
4. A detachable handle for cooking vessels having a keeper' secured to and carried by the vessel, agrip portion provided With a terminal dependingv bearing member for engagement with said keeper, transversely movable locking members mounted upon the bearing member'lior engagement With open- It detachable handle t'or cooking -vessels comprising a keeper carried by the ves sel, a grip portion provided with a terminal bearing member 'tor engagement with said keeper, locking` members mounted upon the bearing member for engagement'ivith the keeper, a plunger rmeratively connectedwith said locking members for effecting the extension and retraction thereot,'and an operating lever connected with the plunger and terminally arranged Within convenient reach or the handle grip.
