A TTORNEY entree STATES PATENT oFFIce.
HENRY F. SCHMIDT, OF SWARTI-IMORE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTING- HOUSE ELECTR IC AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA. I
CIRCULATING PUMP.
T 0 allwiwm it may concern Be it knownthat I, HENRY F. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Swarthmore, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Circulating Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to systems for circulating or pumping fluids and particularly to cooling water circulating systems for condensers'and it has for its object to produce a new and improved pumping or circulating system, together with a new and improved governing means therefor. A more specific object is to produce a water governor for pumping or circulating systems which is independent in operation of variations in pressure" of the water passing through the systern.
These and other objects are attained by means of apparatus embodying the features of my invention herein-described and illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view of a condenser installation embodying my invention, partially in section and partially in elevation, Fig. 2
is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of-the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawing I have illustrated a surface condenser 5 having a steam inlet port i 6 at its top, a condensate outlet port 7 at its bottom, and an ejector 8 for Withdrawing air and other non-condensable gases and vapors therefrom. At one end of the condenser I have shown an inlet water box 9 and at the other end an outlet water box 10. In operation, cooling water is delivered to the water box 9 and after passing through the cooling elements of the condenser, is discharged into the outlet water box 10, which may be connected with a suitable discharge conduit.
Connected with the water box 9 of the condenser 5, I have shown a circulating pump 11. As illustrated, the pump 11 is provided with an elbow shaped casing 12 having a converging diverging portion 13 and, at right angles thereto, a cylindrical inlet portion 14. In the throat of the converging diverging portion 13, I have shown a propeller15, which is mounted on the end Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 13 1922 Application filed April 16, 1920.
Serial No. 374,374.
of a rotatable shaft 16 axially aligned with the converging diverging portion 13 of the casing 12.: As illustrated, the shaft 16 passes through the curved end of the casing 12 and is supported by a tube 17 which projects from the inner wall of the casing nearly to the throat of the converging diverging portion 13 of the casing.
As illustrated, the outer end of the shaft 16 is operatively connected to a turbine 18. The turbine illustrated is provided with an inlet port 19, and inlet valve 20, and an exhaust port 21. The valve 20, as shown, is connected to a diaphragm 22 by means of a suitable stem 23. Enclosing the stem 23, I have shown a compression spring 23 which tends to hold the valve 20 open. As illustrated, the diaphragm 22 is enclosed within a casing 24 which it divides into two chambers 25 and 26. In the arrangement illustrated, the chamber 25 is connected by means ofa pipe 27 with the interior of the pump casing 12, and the chamber 26 is connected by means of a pipe 28 with an annular chamber 29 formed as shown in the tube 17 and the casing 12 into the water box 9 of the con-- denser'5. In passing through this diverging passageway, a part of the velocity energy of the water is converted into pressure energy in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. As illustrated, the water box 9 also diverges, thereby tending to further increase the pressure of the water as the water passes through it and at the same time allowing the stream to spread out so that the water may enter all of the cooling elements of the condenser without any radical change in direction of'fiow. Y
The speed of'the turbine 18 is regulated by the positioning of the inlet valve 20 in response to unba-lancin of the force of the spring 23 -and the differential pressure on tion of the impeller on the water.
the diaphragm 22. Then the turbine 18. is not running, the impeller 30 is stationary and consequently substantially the same pressure exists in both the chamber 25 and the chamber 26. Under these conditions, the differential force acting on the diaphragm 22 is zero, and the spring 23 moves the inletvalve 20 to its extreme open position.
l/Vllen steam is delivered tothe turbine 18 and it begins to speed up, the rotation of the impeller 30 creates an additional pressure in the annularchamber 29, and hence in the chamber 26,- by reason ofthe centrifugal acdeliveredto the-annular chamber 29 through the ports 31. This pressure increases withthe speed until it becomes high enougl'r to overcome the force of the spring-23 and to thereby partially close the inlet valve of the turbine 18-. If for any reason, the load on the impeller 15 is increased to such an extent as to reduce the speed of the turbine 18, the pressure generated by the impeller 30 will become less, hence the differenial pressure of the fluid acting on the diaphragm 22 will be reduced and the spring 23 will open the inlet valve 20 sufficiently to-restore the speed to normal. Obviously for each setting "of the spring 28 there is only one speed of the pump which will produce equilibrium in the governor, consequently the speed may be varied by varying the compression of the spring 23.
Any variation in pressure of the water entering the pump 11 will not affect the regulation of the turbine 18, for the reason that the increase will be transmitted equally to both sidesof the'diaphragm 22 and hence will bevba'lanced. VVhen-us'ed foiwmarine work this arrangement insures theproper governingof theturbine 18 irrespective of the varying draft of the vessel in which the system is installed.
While I. have shown my invention inbut oneform, it will be obvious-to those skilled in the art that it 1s not so limited but is sue ceptible of various other changes and modi fi'cation's, without departing thereof, and I desire therefore,"that-only such limitations shall. be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or as are specific'al'ly set forth in the appended claims.
