RUBBER. COMPANY, OF CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
BAG.
To all wimm- 25 may compr/1,:
Be it known that I, Josnvri Tann, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cuyahoga Falls, in the county of Summit and State of 0hio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to bags for holding golf clubs and like uses and more particularly to a golf bag or the like produced of a moldable composition such as rubber compound with suitable reinforcements.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a golf bag that may be cast, molded or formed in one piece as a unit, and including in the molded formation, a plurality of vertical stays which reinforce the bag longitudinally, and also the collar and collar rim at the top of the bag, and the bottom ring and base of the bag.
In accordance with my invention the bag bottom, which is molded as a part of the one-piece unit, has embedded therein a re inforcement of special material somewhat harder than the rest of the bag and so designed as to resist the impact of the clubs or other articles. rlhis reinforcing material is at the same time resilient enough to avoid unnecessary and unpleasant metallic sounds and so as to cause no injury to the clubs when dropping them into the bag. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive feature of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of a golf bag embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is al transverse section on a relatively enlarged scale, on line 2 2 of-Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section on the same scale as Fig. 2, and with an intermediate portion brolen away.
1 0 indicates the body of the golf bag which may be made of a dimension to receive a usual set of golf clubs, and as illustratively shown, of circular cross section. This body is produced of a suitable composition capable of being cast or molded, certain rubber compounds being suitable for the purpose, and it has molded therewith, as a one-piece unit, atop collar or band 11 with a collar ring or bead 12 at its upper exn speeifmafm of Lettersratent. tremity, and also a bottom reinforcing collar or band 13. The bag bottom lll is molded as a part'of the one-piece unit, substantially thicker than the side walls and with a re inforcing layer l5 embedded therein. This reinforcing layer or sheet may be of any suitable material, somewhat harder than the rest of the bag, and with a toughness to re sist the impact of the clubs. vulcanized canvas or fiber is suitable for this purpose though other materials may be used.
Molded also as a part of the one-piece unit are a plurality of vertical stays or ribs en'n tending the length of the bag between the end collars ll, 13. Two such vertical stays are herein indicated at opposite sides of the bag, these appearing as ribs 16 exteriorly of the bag. Incorporated in this bag or unit is an interior carcass of strong fabric such as canvas indicated at 17 and lining the entire interior of the bag, thus giving reinforcement at all necessary points.
In the preferred process of manufacture, the entire bag is built up in the uncured state, then placed in a mold which gives the outer contour to the bag; the hollow of the bag is formed by inserting into the uncured, but built up bag, what is known as an air bag, previous to closing the mold. `When pressure and heat are turned on in the curing process, air is injected into this air bag at a pre-determined pressure which forces the material with great pressure against the inside of the mold, thus insuring a uniform and perfect cure.
In the practice of the invention, the bag may be made either with a smooth outer surface or with any suitable grain representing leather or any other lrind of surface. rThe bag thus produced may have attached thereto a ball poclret 18, shoulder straps 1 9, and a handle 20, all these parts being preferably made of moldable rubber composition which may be the same as that of the body of the bag; these parts may be attached either by stitching or riveting, the straps being preferably riveted, and the ball pocket stitched to the bag body. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the fore- 3. A golf bag or the like comprising zi body i'einfoced interiorly by a fil-bfi@ lining with collars at top and bottoni, a reinforced bottoni, opposite Vertical stays extending the length of the bag and a top bea-d, all formed and molded as' a one-piece unit and vulcanized.
ln testimony wlieieotl I aliX my signature in 'pi'esence of two witnesses.
