To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALnxANDnR CONSTAN- TINE lemons, J12, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 34: Porchester Terrace, London, W. 2, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Gaseous- Fuel Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the formation of combustible gaseous mixtures from continuous supplies of two elastic fluid constituents, suchas gas and air maintained by sensitive pressure balancing appliances at constantly related pressures, said constituents prior to ignition being combined in the correct proportions for complete combustion irrespective of the surrounding elements, upon issue from an open orifice, preferably in a chamber from which the wasteproducts are expelled without the suction generally exerted by a chimney or equivalent device. In an appliance in which a central column of one gaseous fluid is surrounded by a sheath formed of another gaseous fluidmoving in the same direction, andsaid streams when mingled pass into a combustion chamber, means have beenprovided for adjusting at the mixing point the area of the port ,or aperture through which one of the constituents passes and when such port is utilized for the lighter one of two constituents and the burner is of moderate dimensions it will operate satisfactorily over a fair range of pressure variations. Where, however, greater pressure variations are experienced or the size of burner and consequently the areas of the passage-ways are so increased that the ratio of frictional resistis materially altered, difficulties are experienced which it is the object of the present invention to overcome.
Theinvention'lconsistsin a gaseous fuel combustion appliance for forming a mixture oftwo fluids as indicated, closely adjacent to the combustion zone, in (which saidfluids enter a central space'through adjacent parallel circumferential port belts, each of ad justable width, and the mixture passes immediately by-a diverging orifice into a combustion chamber.
The invention also consists in improvements in or relating to burner and mixing appliances as hereinafter described,

ber a and the end 9 of the hollow cylinder 9 varied, in order to adjust the parallel sided radial disc-like passage-way leading from the annular gas passage into the mouthpiece c.
Within the hollow cylinder 5/ is a closed tube or solid rod m having a flat circular end, by means of which the passageway through the aperture it may be adjusted. The tube or rod m is supported adjacent to its flat end upon wings or guides at for retaining it coaxial with the aperture, and at its other end it is provided with a screwed portion 0 engaging an internal thread in the end of the bulb 7'. At the extreme end of the rod m is a squared or similar portion p for receiving a key, by'meansof which the radial passageway leading to the aperture it may be adjusted, which provision in combination with the arm Z permits adjustment of both port belts without disconnecting the burner or even interrupting combustion. In burners of large dimensions or where very high temperatures are likely to be experienced, the portion of the cylindrical chamber an adjacent to the burner mouthpiece may be formed in the refractory material of the wall itself and the remainder of the chamber may be formed of metal suitably connected thereto. Alternatively, a cylindrical refractory portion may be separately attached to the metal portion of the chamber shell prior to the attachment of the complete element to the furnace wall. The inner part of the hollow cylinder 9 and the end of the rod or tube m may also in like manner he formed of refractory material suitably connected to metal portions which are provided in the cooler parts of the apparatus.
Means for obtaining a sample ofthe mixture may be provided by replacing the rod vii-with a hollow member having a removable plug at its inner end, or a small passage-way may be provided from the flared combustion orifice to the exterior of the furnace wall for this purpose.
Other modifications and additions may also be introduced without in any way de parting from the'spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as, new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v 1. In combination in a gaseous fuel combustion appliance for forming a mixture of two fluids closely adjacent to the combustion zone, a chamber, an orifice opening from the end thereof to a combustion space, a tubular member movable axially to and from said orifice in said chamber and having an end provided with an aperture in line with and adjacent to said orifice, a member within said tubular member complemental to and in line with said aperture and axially movable to adjust the passage of fluid therethrough, an enlargement at the end of said chamber remote from said orifice, an inlet branch for admitting a fluid such as combustible gas to enlargement, an inlet branch for admitting a fluid such as air to said casing, screw threaded apertures at the end of said enlargement and in the adjacent side of said casing through which said tubular member projects, screw-threads on said tubular member complemental to said threaded apertures, a rod projecting from said member movable in said tubular member extending through the end of said casing and co-operating screw-threads in said casing and upon said rod for effecting axial adjustmentthereof.
7. In combination in a gaseous fuel combustion appliance for forming a mixture of two fluids closely adjacent to the combustion zone, a conduit leading to a combustion space, an abrupt and considerable restriction reducing the end of the latter portion of said conduit, a tubular member having at one end a constricted aperture axially movable in said conduit with said aperture adjacent and in line with said restriction, an adjusting stopper complemented to said aperture movable axially in line therewith in said tubular member and means for supplying the two constituent ofa combustible gaseous fluid mixture separately to said conduit and said tubular member.
