Description

GLO. NETH.
METAL CUTTING MACHINE TOOL. APPLICATION FILED JULY 14,1920.
.,1,418,727. PatentedJune 6, 1922.
1 a i s s; 1:
GEORGE G. NETH, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
METALCUTTINGMACHINE TGOL.
Application filed July 14, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. NETH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in MetaLCutting Machine Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relate to new and useful improvements in metal cutting tools adapted to be used in connection with latl planers, shapers and the like. The obyect oi the invention is to provide a tooi of the above type by means of which the work may be machined accurately. To the above end the device is simple in construction and eiiicient in operation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Fig. l i a plan view; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a section on the lines 3--3 of Figs; 1 and 2; Fig. iis a section on the line 4- l of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55of Figs. 1. and 9,; and i igs. 6 to 9 inclusive are detail views of the resilient plugs which form a part of the tool.
Referring more particularly to the draw ing -1 represents a shank having a head The head 2 is provided with an opening or orifice 3- adapted to receive a bit '4.. The bit l provides the cutting edge -5, which may be of various shapes. The opening or orifice 3 is of such a shape that it is adapted to receive either a square or a round bit. The bit is held Within the opening by a set screw -6. To provide a resilient mounting for the bit, the head 2 is provided with L kerf -7 which provides a resilient portion -8 in the head. This resilient portion of the head allows the tool to recede whenever the tool strikes a hard spot in the metal. To augment this resilient portion, commensurate with the metal worked upon and the accuracy of Work desired, the head, at the upper end of the kerf -7, is provided with an orifice -9 adapted to receive Specification of Letters Patent.

plugs 10 of various resiliency. The plugs -10- are provided with a central. opening -1l and a kerf 12-. The openings l1 are oi various diameters thereby varying the resiliency of the plugs. The plugs -l1 may be easily driven in and out of the orifice 9- and are held therein by a drive fit. The plugs 10 and the resilient portion -8 are disposed perpendicuiarly to the cutting line of the tool, therefore, the receding movement of the bit 5- will be away from the work or in line with or parallel to the cutting line. This disposition oi the plugs and portion -8- prevents the bit moving laterally. thereby eliminating the possibility oi inaccurate work. The tool is particularly adapt ed to be used in machining grooves and slots such as screw threads. The bit 5 is disposed at an angle to the shank 1-, which permits the orifice -3* to be open at both ends and eliminates excess metal in the head -2-. The shank -l is adapted to be received by the conventional tool holder -13- of the lathe, planer or shaper in a well known manner.
Having described my invention I claim In a device of the character described, a wedge shaped head, a shank extending from the wide end and inaiinemen't with one side thereof, said head having an opening adapted to receive a cutting element lying parallel with the other side of said head and at an angle to said shank, means for holding said cutting element in said opening, said head having a kerii and a soclret extending across the wide portion thereof. said kerf opening throi'igh the under side thereof, lying at a right angle to the opening for the cijitting element and permitting the "torward portion of the head and thecuttine: element to yield, said socket being adapted to receive bushings of difi'erent resilience.
In testimony whereof T affix my signature.
GEORGE C. NETH.
