STORE-SERVICE CABINET.
rare ed Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1922.
Application filed. January 6, 1922. Serial No. 527,435.
To all whomt't may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN T. GRAM- now, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atchison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Service Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in store service apparatus, more particularly to an improvement in show cases for exhibiting the goodsor articles to be sold in a convenient and sanitary manner.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple and practical unit of construction which may be multiplied indefinitely to provide a show case of desired di mensions, each unit providing a series of exhibiting compartments that cannot be readily opened or otherwise rendered accessible without removing the entire unit from its position in the cabinet. That is to say, it is proposed to'provide a display unit for holding a comparatively small quantity of the goods to be exhibited to the prospective customer but which cannot be readily tampered with to permit promiscuous sampling while at the same time protecting the contents of the compartments or bins of the unit against contamination from dust and other foreign matter.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which is easy to manufacture and simple to install, thereby enhancing the commercial aspect of the improved device.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the cabinet embodying the present improvement.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the rear of one of the display units.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying the present invention into effect, it will of course be understood that the same is susceptible of embodiment in different forms and styles of cabinets, but a simple and practical construction is shown in the drawings in which the cabinet C consists of the base section 1, top 2, front wall 3 and the vertical panel strips S arranged at spaced intervals, and provided at their inside edges with a rabbet 4: to receive the side flanges or shoulder 5 of the compartment carrier 6 of the display unit D.
This display unit is therefore removably mounted in the front of the cabinet and to facilitate the positioning and removal thereof, as well as providing for holding it in position, the lower edge of the carrier 6 is formed with a lockingtongue 7 for engaging with a groove 8 in the base section 1 of the cabinet, while the upper edge thereof may be engaged by a suitable retaining strip 9 placed along the upper edge of the units, or by any equivalent holding means such as a turn button or the like. With this arrangement the carrier 6 may be readily placed in position by simply inserting the tongue 7 in the groove 8 and swinging the unit into place. 7
The front or face of the carrier 6 is provided with a multiplicity of compartments or containers 10, for receiving the goods or articles to be exhibited, and closed by a suitable cover 11 which may be entirely of glass or other transparent material, to thereby exhibit the full contents of the compartment and yet prevent access thereto except upon the removal of the entire carrier from its position in the cabinet. That is to say, the cover 11 is preferably a sliding cover which may be inserted from the rear of the carrier so that when the unit is in place the wall 8 of the cabinet will constitute an abutment to prevent the shifting or sliding of the cover from its protecting position over the contents of the compartment.
With reference to the particular details for mounting the sliding cover 11 it may be observed from Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings that the carrier 6 is provided with a suitable slot 12 at the top of each compartment which communicates with suitable guide slots 13 formed in the top of the compartments 10 with the aid of the heading or molding strips 14:.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a novel and distinctive feature of the present invention is the provision of a display unit D consisting of a carrier 6 hav ing a plurality of compartments 10 on one face thereof and provided with sliding covers 11 inserted from the rear of the carrier in such a manner that when the unit is positioned in the seat formed by the wall 3 and rabbets 4-, the withdrawal or shifting of the covers to gain access to the compartments is prohibited.
lVithout further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art and it will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention orthe scope of the appended claims 1. A display unit for store service cabinets including a carrier member having a plurality of display compartments, and covers for the compartments adapted to be locked against movement to prevent access to the compartments by a portion of the cabinet when the unit is placed'in position therein.
2. A store service cabinet including a display unit having means for detachably engaging with the cabinet, a plurality of display compartments mounted on one face of the unit, and covers for the compartments locked in position by a portion of the cabinet when the display unit is in place therein.
8. A store service cabinet having a seat, a display unit adapted to removably fit into said seat, display compartments carried by the face of said unit and sliding covers for: said compartments adapted to be inserted from the side of the unit which engages with the seat in the cabinet.
l. A store service cabinet having a rabbeted seat, a display unit including a carrier member, compartments arranged on one face of the carrier, slots in the carrier at the top of each compartment, guides formed in the top of each compartment and communicating with the slot, sliding covers adapted to be inserted through said slots into the guides when the unit is removed from the seat, said covers being locked in posi tion over the compartments by contact with the cabinet when the unit is in place therein.
A store service cabinet having a seat, a display unit consisting of a carrier member fitted with a plurality of superposed compartments, a transverse slot formed at the top edge of each compartment, covers adapted to be fitted over said compartments through said slots when the unit is removed from the cabinet, and means for locking the carrier in the seat of the cabinet thereby to lock the covers of the compartments against withdrawal to prevent access to the compartments.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN T. GRAMBOW'. lVitnesses Z. E. JAoKsoN, OPAL THOMAS.
