Be it k'nown that I, ALoNzo E. RHQADES,
a citizen of the United States, and residentof Hopeda'le, county'of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an :Impr'ovement in Filling Clamping and Parting. Mechanism for'Looms, of which the'follow-.
replenishing looms wherein the running filling is replenished prior to completeexhau'stion and wherein the old or spent filling is .parted between the cloth andthe shuttle by parting means mounted uponJacar-rier,
' such asthe usualswinging shuttle feeler, so
as to bemoved bodily, rearwardly and forwardly or toward and from the lay. The
object .of the invention is; to provide an im-q proved simple and effective means for operating the filling clamping and parting dc vice when, and only when, a fresh'filling' carrier is transferred from the magazine or supply to thelav.
The object of the'inventionv further provide a construction which may be readily adapted to existing looms.
The object of the-invention is further to provide aconstruction which will yield upon the occurrence of an abnormal res stance to the operation of the filling, clamping and parting device.
The object of the inventionis furtherto provide a construction. whicheliminates the necessity of special accuracy in the assembling, positioning and adjusting of the filling, clampingand parting mechanism. I v
The ob ect of the invention s further to provide a'constructionin which theparts are.
' readily positioned sothat when the movable cutter blade is actuated toclose-the filling,
clamping and parting device -no' inplrious strain/is placed uponthe parts after the closing position has-been reached. 7
These and other objects and features of the invention will appear more fully from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed-out in the claims.-., ,Inthe drawings: Fig. lie a transverse section of a portion- Specification of Letters Patent. .Patented J 1119 of an automatic filling replenishingloom witha' preferredform of the present inven tion embodied therein filling clamping and rearward POSltlOIL The construction above stated isthat of the well-known Northrop type of automatic" filling replenishing "'loom' and as this con I struction is familiar to those skilled in the art no detailed illustration or description beyond thefeatures particularly concerned with this'invention is necessary.- The broad feature of insuring the operation of I the filling clamping and parting means when-, 'and only when, a fresh filling the lay is disclosedin the patent; to Davis, 1,084,878 granted JanuaryyQO, 19-14. and a carrier is transferred from the magazine to" of Edward S. .Stimpsonf No; 469,509 filedffl May '14-, 1921; The 'patent'to'Davis serves to illustrate the, general type of mechanismin, connection with ,which the preferred form of. the present inventi on is h erein illustrated Inthe present'inventiona rigid actuator v or actuator lever is provided for effecting the closing movement of the filling clamping and parting device. This actuator is permanently connected 'tothe usual fil-ling'c'arrier support which yieldsan'd supports and guides theflfillingpcarrier as-it passes from the magazine to the lay, so that the actuator is moved when, and onlywhen, .a fresh fill-f ing carrier is transferred; The yielding feature whichcharacterizes the inventio'nis provided in this invention by a" spring; connectedto -thef'actuator lever and to. a'fiX-edpart of-the' loom such as the hopperforvmagabnormal resistance, to the-operation 'of the spring yields or exitendsthus securingthe desiredresultswl r A simple" adjustment is provided; between the parts 3 of *the actuator lever which permitsof .the ready assembling and adjustment v ofthe-entire mechanism includingth'e filling clampingmand partingdevice. lThe perma- I 95. azi-n'e stand. Under normal conditions'this" spr ng rigid but upon the occurrenceflof" nent attachment of the actuator lever to the filling carrier support insures at all times its accurate position.
lVith this general understanding a brief description of the construction will be sufficient,
The lay 1; the transferrer 2 which upon the call for filling replenishment acts to transfer the fresh filling carriers, or in this case the bobbins from the magazine or hopper 4; to the lay, or in this case to the shuttle 5, at the replenishing side of the loom; the controller rocks shaftfi which is rocked upon' the indication of substantial exhaustion in the running shuttle and acts to initiate filling replenishment; the breast beam 7 the shuttle feeler arm 8; which rocks and slides on the stud 9, being swung over the lay in front of the bOXed' shuttle upon the operation of the contr ller rock shaft 6 and returned .under the action of the spring 10 are parts the construction and operation of which-will be readily understood by one familiar with the art, such as is dis-.
closed in the patentto Davis above mentioned and the patents therein referred to.
The replenishing magazine is provided with'the usual guide stop 11 againstwhich the filling carrier 3 is brought into position for transfer. The filling carrier to be transferred is yieldingly supported and guided on the side opposite to the stop 11 by the usual movable filling .carrier support 12 in v the form of a fiat finger located adjacent the inner face of the magazine. This supporting finger 12 is connected to a stud 13 extending through the side of the magazine and carrying on the opposite side an arm 14.
" A. spring 15 is held between a lug 16 on the magazine and the head 17 of a slide rod 18' connected with the arm-l4, the rod being guided in the lug. The stop 11 thus forms one side of a throat-which the filling carrier passes through from the magazine to the lay, the filling carrier support or finger 12' forming the other side. When the transferrer 2 is operated to transfer a fresh filling carrier from the magazine to the lay, this filling carrier support yields'and supports and guides the filling carrier as it passes to the lay;
i ,The filling clamping and parting device shuttle feeler 8 toward the lay. If the shut-. tle is properly boxed this feeler will pass in front of the shuttle in the usual manner and the lug 23 will be brought into the path of a bunter on the lay and thereupon the transferrer 2 will be operated to transfer a 1 fresh filling carrier 3 from themagazine to the lay there beneath.
lVhen the shuttle feeler thus swings rear.- wardly over the lay the filling extending from the filling carrier to be abandoned enters between the members of the filling clamping and parting device which are then in open position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1.
. In the case of the type of mechanism to which this invention relates the filling clamping and parting device is closed to clamp and part the filling when, and only when, the filling carrier is actually transferred by the transferrer from the magazine to the lay. Consequently if the shuttle be improperly boxed so that it is struck by'the shuttle feeler or if the conditions are such that the shuttle feeler no matterto what extent it may move does not effect a filling transfer, or if for any reason the filling transfer does not actually take place then there can be no severance of the filling by In securing this result. the present inyenthe filling clamping and parting device.
tion provides a yieldable actuator or actu,a-'
tor lever permanently connected to the fill ng carrier support and extended inpo- .s itio n to effect the' closing action of the filling clamping and parting device when it is in operative position and transfer takes place and the filling carrier support is moved. The fulcrum of this actuator lever consists of a spring connected to a fixed part of the loom such as the magazine stand so that in case of any abnormal resistance there will be no danger of a smash or of damage to the loom. This construction also eliminates the requirement of any great nicety or accuracy in adjusting and positioning of the mechanism including the filling clamping and parting means so long as the parts are adjusted to insure the closing action of the filling-clamping and parting means. Any further movement which may take place due to the adjustment or positionof the parts will be taken up by the yield of the fulcrum spring of the actuator. The mech anism is readilyiapplied to an existing-loom without alteration and is always in permanent position because of its connection to the filling carrier'support, A simple adjustment is also provided by makingthe actua.-
port. At its forward end the bar 14 has a vertical rib and groove connection with a vertical bar 27 forming a part of the actuator lever. A stud 28 in the bar 24 passes through a slot 29 in the bar 27 and is provided with a nut 30, thus enabling the parts of the actuator lever to be relatively adjusted. The lower end of the bar 27 which constitutes the forward end of the actuator lever is provided with a laterally extending foot plate 31 inclined downwardly and forwardly and so adjusted and positioned that when the filling clamping and parting de vice moves to its rearward or operative position with the blades in open position the pin 32 projecting laterally from the fixed blade 19 will pass and stand over this foot plate. The bar 24 of the actuator lever is fulcrumed at 33 on the lower end of a helical spring 3 1 hooked onto a stud 35 secured in a fixed part of the loom such as the magazine stand.
It will be seen therefore that if transfer takes place and the filling clamping and parting means are in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 or in operative position the filling carrier support 12 will be rocked thus carrying the rearward end of the actuator lever downwardly. This rocks the actuator lever about its fulcrum 33 and raises the forward end terminating in the foot plate 31 thus in turn raising the pin 32 of the movable member of the filling clamping and parting device and effecting the clamping and parting of the filling. If, for any reason whatever, such as inaccuracy of adjustment, or abnormal resistance to movement of the parts the movement of the actuator lever continues after the filling clamping and parting means have closed then the spring 34 will yield and thus no injury or damage will occur to any of the parts.
The opening movement of the filling clamping and parting device is effected by a pin 36 projecting laterally from the blade 19 in connection with the usual switch cam 37 pivoted at 38 on the supporting arm 39.
There is thus provided a very simple and practical mechanism readily applied to existing looms, readily adjusted to existing conditions and of strong and efiicient construction.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a lay, a replenishing magazine for the fresh filling carriers, means for transferring a fresh filling carrier from. the magazine to the lay, a filling clamping and partingdevice movable into position to receive the running filling when the lay is in position for transfer, a movable filling carrier support moved by the filling carrier upon its discharge from the magazine to the lay, a spring connected at one end to the loom frame and forming at the other end a fulcrum support, an actuator lever pivoted at one end on the movable filling carrier support, fulcrumed on the said fulcrum support, and engagingat the other end the filling clamping and parting device when in rearward position whereby the said actuator lever is yieldable upon the occurrence of an abnormal resistance but acts under normal conditions to actuate the filling clamping and parting device upon the movement of the filling carrier support to effect the clamping and parting of the filling extending from the filling carrier to be abandoned.
2. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising the construction defined in claim 1 in which the actuator lever is constructed in two parts and provided with means for adjustably connecting the said parts together.
3. An automatic filling replenishing loom comprising the construction defined in claim 1 in which the end of the actuator lever is provided with a laterally, extending foot plate and in which the movable member of the filling clamping and parting device is provided with a laterally extending pin arranged to stand above the foot plate when the filling clamping and parting device is in rearward operative position.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
ALONZO E. RHOADES.
